Pubilic Attitude Towards Science

10151130 陶予涵

With the rapid development of the science and technology, nowadays

our life is much more convenient and colorful than a few years ago.

However, nobody can deny the advance of science has also brought

plenty of dangers and anxiety to the public as the public sometimes lack

enough knowledge about some subjects like nuclear physics. As a result,

the public may wonder if we tend to destroy ourselves with our own

destructive weapon named science, even though it is admitted that a large

sum of wonderful changes have taken place because of science in the past

hundreds of years. Perhaps we might listen to Franklin Roosevelt as well,

“Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Thus, it is significant that the

public have strong faith in the future of science and human beings.

If the public, the creator of history, clears about how the great

advance of science has changed our world thoroughly, their anxiety about

the adverse impact caused by science may appear a decreasing tendency.

As Steven Hawking stated in Public Attitude Towards Science, the public

needs to enhance a basic understanding of science because only in this

method can they figure out whether science is blame to plenty of

populations and wars on our planet, or something else, like the ignorance

of human beings, mustassume the responsibility. In addition, a large

number of people do not possesses any opportunity to catch up with the latest advance of science throughout the world, which means our

necessary and urgent task to give the public the scientific background will

certainly meet serious difficulties.

In order to educate the public about science, nowadays there are

several effective methods in our society: the Internet, school education,

TV programs, popular books and magazines. In a democracy country, a

free man is able to obtain knowledge from many sources besides books

(Thomas Jefferson).Actually, public media does make a big influence to

the public-taking the Internet for example, World Wide Web puts across

the latest and excellent scientific developments facing billons of

audiences all over the world at the same time. According to Bill Gates,

the Internet can transform our mode to acquire scientific knowledge even

if some people are not willing to join thefictitious world.

Regarding the great power of science and technology, the thinking

towards science of the public largely determines what the tomorrow of

humankind will be. Obviously, well-educated public benefiting from the

Internet, school educations, books, etc. would perform better than before

when they were involved in disasters and dangers related to science. Thus,

from now on we must be devoted to establishing a rational attitude

towards science in the public. As a matter of fact, only if the public

acquires a good understanding of science, can not only science but also

human beings achieve a bright future.
