1 Unit 1 Shopping 1. Where do you usually go shopping? Why? Bookstore is one of my favorite shopping places, too. I go there not only to buy some interesting or useful books, but also buy movies, CDs or VCD of some super stars` latest performance. I choose some small stores sometimes to dig out something odd but special or funny like candles, hairpins or perfumed soaps and so on.
2. What do you think of Beijing’s shopping environment? Beijing’s shopping environment is very convenient. There are many free markets, big shopping centers, small stores or clothing stores in streets and alleys. So, one can always get what he or she wants in all kinds of shopping places. Both the local people of Beijing and foreign visitors find the shopping environment very clean and comfortable. The shop assistants are friendly, polite and warmhearted. They regard the customers as God and ready to serve every one of them.
3. Do you prefer free market or big shopping centers? Why? I prefer free markets because the prices of goods are not fixed by the government. I can bargain with sellers. Not only the prices are many times cheaper than big shopping centers, but also the choices are so abundant. There are all kinds of clothes, trousers, toys or necessaries of life. There are also things that owned the Chinese characteristics such as Chinese national costumes, classical Chinese furniture or Chinese ceramics. That’s why more and more foreign visitors are interested in going shopping at free markets in Beijing.
4. Where do you usually go to buy clothes? TianLanTian is my first choice when I want to buy clothes. It’s far from my home, but my mum and I still like to go there. The prices are low there and I can bargain with sellers. There are a great variety of clothes, but there is no guarantee in the quality of clothes sometimes. So I choose to go to big shopping center like Shuang An when buying some famous brand like Nike or Reebok.
5. When you buy clothes, do you value brand or fashion? In my opinion, fashion only exists during a very short time and changes too fast. So, to 2
buy fashionable clothes, we’d better go to clothing market where the clothes are both cheap and fashionable.
But I do value some famous brands in the world as these brands are always running ahead of fashion. Although they change with seasons, they still contain the credit and fashion. So, I think brands are never out of fashion.
Unit 2 Transportation 1. Can you compare different means of transportation in Beijing? There are different means of transportation used in Beijing. First, buses are most useful and popular, because there are so many lines to everywhere in Beijing. And also, the cost of taking buses is reasonable. If you have a card, you can get 60 percent off. If you are a student, you can get even 80 percent off. That’s wonderful. On the other hand, during the rush hour, the buses are usually overcrowded, and they don’t appear to run to any timetable, so you could find yourself waiting five minutes or twenty and then when one bus does appear followed by two or three others. You never know how long you’ll have to wait for a bus.
Second, subway. Now, no matter how far you travel in Beijing subway line, the cost of it is the same. So if you want to get to your destination quickly and there is a subway station near your destination, you should take the subway, because the time of every train is limited. They are more reliable than taking a bus.
Last, taxi. In my opinion, you should take a taxi only when you are in a hurry. The cost of it is the most expensive among all the transportation modes in Beijing. However, do remember not to take a taxi during the rush hours. It won’t be rather fast as you think as usual and you’ll pay much more on waiting for the traffic lights. That’s not worthwhile.
2. What do you think of Beijing’s transportation? What advice do you have to improve it?
I think Beijing’s transportation is much better than before since the line five subway has been built. The line five runs through the north to the south of Beijing, so people who live in northern part could go southern much more conveniently and quickly than ever before.
