Tolerance, restrain, and perseverance…

These are the words that my Tae Kwon Do class will begin with every time. Before the first

class began, the coach explained these words one by one but I did not pay any attention to them

because at that time my head was full of those fierce fights and breath-taking movements I saw on

the television. Hoping the coach to speak as fast as he could, I could not help imagining myself

giving a cool kick on the body of my “enemy” . However, when the coach published the training

content of the first class, I felt rather disappointed: 5000m long distance running and 30 sets of frog

jump, nothing to do with Tae Kwon Do.

“It is just one class.” I comforted myself. To my surprise, in the following two classes, we did

nothing but running, jumping and climbing rocks. I couldn't stand it anymore.

“I quit. I come to learn Tae Kwon Do and all this has nothing to do with it.” I complained to my

coach and decided to quit the class.

“What do you think is relevant about Tae Kwon Do?,,He did not get angry at all; instead, I

could see smile on his face.

“Kick the person confronting with you. ” I answered this easy question without a second

thought.

“Then kick me with all your strength. ”

I was stunned by his words but I decided to show him what I was capable of. Using all my

strength, I gave him a heavy kick yet I was surprised to see that he didn,t move back at all. The kick

seemed to be so weak that it did not have any impact on him. I stood still feeling rather confused.

“ See? This is why I taught you to remember the three words in the first place. You are not

wasting your time doing those exercises because they help you accumulate enough strength in

your body with which you can give a stronger kick than your opponent. Only those who have

tolerance, restrain and perseverance can insist upon such training and only those people can win

the game in the end. ” These words were deeply implanted in my head and I never said about

quitting the class since that day.

I gradually understood that every movement in the game had been practiced hundreds or even

thousands of times in order to have the biggest impact. Tae Kwon Do is more than wins and losses.

In fact, it embodies a kind of spirit: accumulate enough strength to give the best kick. And this spirit

can only be cultivated through tolerance, restrain and perseverance.

Having learned Tae Kwon Do for more than three years, I felt rather glad that I chose not to quit

in the beginning because what it taught me greatly influenced my life. When I first entered high

school, I was not enrolled in the fast class due to my weakness in math. What was more shocking to

me was that in the first math examination, I got the lowest score in my class. In the

second examination, things did not change. I felt rather discouraged and confused and then the

words of my coach rang in my head, “accumulate enough strength to give the best kick” . Then I

re-allocated my time and focused on the study of math. At the same time, I carefully analyzed my

papers locating my weakness in math study and doing exercises accordingly. One month later, I

moved to the middle level of my class. In the end of the semester, I became the No.l in my class, the

best kick I had ever made.

Whenever being asked about my secrets of study, I would smile and say “Tae Kwon Do Spirit” .

This is the most important lesson I learned in my past eighteen years and I would like to keep it in

my mind in my entire life.
