arises from recognition of some incongruity of speech, action, or character revelation, with intricate plot.

The term refers to literary composition devoted to the presentation of the writer’s own ideas
on a topic and generally addressing a particular aspect of the subject. Often brief in scope and informal in style, the essay differs from such fomal forms as the thesis, dissertation or treatise.

American literature is the youngest literature, because America was not discovered until the end of 16th C,
and it is believed that American literature didn’t begin until the 19th C.
Our first lecture will be brief about American literature of the Colonial Period, which is from the early 17th
