HK$400C.HK$3600D. HK$2400BJon D. Giorgini says he isn’t losing sleep yet over 1950 PA, the kilometer wide asteroid(小行星) that he predicted might hit the planet Earth. After all, if it hits, it won’t get here for 878 years. Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory also spotted a space rock--- about the size of a football field--- passing by Earth just 75,000 miles away. Named 2002 MN, it came closer than any similar-size asteroid had in recent years. Giorgini spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Adam Piore last week. Here is an excerpt.PIORE:According to your research, is this something we should be worried about? GIORGINI: well, not this particular asteroid, 1950 PA, because it’s so far off. It’s 878 years in the future, but it’s possible that there are other asteroids we haven’t discovered yet that could impact sooner. The purpose is to find these things as soon as possible. If there are centuries of warning, there are many things you can do about the threat. But if you only find out about it the last day or two, or the last year, there’s not much you can do.PIORE:What would happen if one of these things hit?GIORGINI:There was an incident where an asteroid nearly the size of 2002 MN hit in Tunguska, Siberia, back in 1908. It exploded in the air and flattened about 800 miles of forested area. 1950 DA would carry about 100,000 megatons(百万吨级) of energy if it hit. It would make a crater(陨石坑)about 10 or 15 miles across and destroy hundreds or thousands of miles around it, kick up dust and steam into the atmosphere. Some would even orbit the Earth for a while. It would be a global problem.PIORE:What should we do about 1950 DA?GIORGINI:In hundreds of years, it’s hard to imagine what ways we’ll have to deal with it. It’s sort of like guys 900 years ago trying to plan the interstate highway system. It would probably be more sensible to leave it to future generations. If you have centuries of warning like this, you can just change the way it absorbs and reflects light and heat. Sunlight shines on it and heats one side, and it turns around to the back and the heat radiates off into space and sort of pushes on it like a weak rocket. Over centuries, it’s enough to push it out of the way.51.The main purpose of Piore interviewing Giorgini is ________.A.to announce an astonishing predictionB.to publicize the significance of a researchC.to warn people of the coming threatD.to create a sensational effect52.What is Giorgini really worried about?A. Unidentified outer space rocks.B. Undiscovered approaching small asteroidsC. The tremendous impact of 2002MND. The potential threat of 1950 PA.53.Giorgini mentioned the asteroid explosion in Tunguska because he would ________.pare the explosion to that of 2002 MN.B.give an impression of an asteroid hitting the earth.C.estimate the property damage a space object causedD.describe a disaster bigger than a nuclear explosion in human history54.Which of the following statements is TURE?A. Ancient people attempted to build main roads connecting cities or states.B. Humans are now in a position to take action on 1950 PA.C. One solution Giorgini suggested is to launch a rocket towards 1950 PA and push it away.D. One solution Giorgini suggested is to change the direction of sunlight shining on 1950 PA.CThe wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential, it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping-where you hand over notes and count out change in return—now happens only in the most minor of our retail encounters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a comer shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go. At the most cutting-edge retail stores—Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance—you don’t go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.Which is nothing more or less than excellent service, if you have the money. But across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. But earning money isn’t quick or easy for most of us. Isn’t it a bit weird that spendi ng it should happen in half a blink (眨眼) of an eye? Doesn’t a wallet—that time-honoured Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness—represent something that matters? But I’ll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment. Everything about the look and feel of a wallet—the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age, the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets—is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone of an iPad. The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as pebble (鹅卵石). Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners, we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer.55. What is happening to the wallet?A) It is disappearing. C) it is becoming costly. B) It is being fattened. D) It is changing in style.56. What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?A) Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.B) The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.C) Earning money is getting more difficult.D) Spending money is so fast and easy.57. Why does the author choose to write about what’s happening to the wallet?A) It represents a change in the modern world.B) It has something to do with everybody’s life.C) It marks the end of a time-honoured tradition.D) It is the concern of contemporary economists.58.What can we infer from the passage about the author?A) He is resistant to social changes.B) He is against technological progress.C) He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.D) He fells insecure in the ever-changing modern world.DWhy do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations:keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity(长寿)? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives?A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的)than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory:those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were moreself-disciplined,for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to b reak when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isn’t destiny(命运),and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.59. The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is____.A)to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanB)to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC)to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD)to examine all the factors contributing to longevity60. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A)They have a good understanding of evolution.B)They are better at negotiating an agreement.C)They generally appear more resourceful.D)They are more likely to get over hardship.61. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A)Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B)Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.C)Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.D)Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.62.What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A)Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.B)Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.C)Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D)Health is in l arge part related to one’s lifestyle.第II 卷(38分)I. That personwas my stepmother.I was nine years old when she entered our home in rural Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “ You are wrong . This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found an outlet for his enthusiasm.”That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that. She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental(牙医) school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the country seat, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brothers and I could be better educated. When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. What if family fights and conflicts(冲突) could be turned into chances to become closer? What if problems could be solved with everyone walking away feeling more deeply cared for and loved?Family fighting is, on one level, about power. Someone is telling someone else what to do. In a short moment, bad feelings can be brought out and the fight is on. You can go down that old road or you can try something different. In any fight, you have a need to be listened to and understood. People raise their voices and shout at each other because they’re not being listened to. You want your mom or dad to listen and understand. You want your brother or sisterto listen and care. But you always see m to forget that the person you’re fighting with has the same need to be listened to. So if you can put aside your need for a few minutes, the situation will change quickly. Give the other person some time to express his or her feelings, and you’ll have yo ur turn to be listened to.And while you are listening, you have to listen for the right information. The best way to do this in emotional(情绪激动的) situations is to pay no attention to most of the words because many people can’t express what they are feeling with the words alone, especially when they are upset. But if the situation starts to get out of hand, it would be wise to just calm down and leave the problem until later because many fights happen at the wrong time. The situation will die down quickly, usually in less than 30 seconds. You can either move on to problem solving or reach an agreement to work on it at a better time. This way, everyone will feel respected and listened to, even when there is conflict. Feelings will be understood and respected, and it will bring your family closer together.49. They are the so-called “ super recognizers ”, who can remember at least 80 percent of facesthey ’ve seen.54 . But studies show that at least one in 50 people are super recognizers, reported the Daily Mail.Bournemouth University of UK recently carried out a study, trying to find whether super recognizers have a different way to process (处理) faces. They found that when these people look at faces, they spend more time looking at the person’s nose. 55 . Their super ability is limited(有限的) only to face recognition.Another important finding is that there are subtypes(子类型) of super recognition. Some super recognizers never forget faces. But for some, if you present pairs of faces to them at the same time, they can quickly decide whether the faces are of the same person or two different people. These subtypes of super recognition could be applied to many areas of life. 56 . And yet, nearly small child can learn and master language. Why is math so overwhelming for so many students? And how high is the price we pay from having so many math- 40 or even math-illiterate(无知的) people in our society? Too high, especially as the ability to grasp data and pursue advanced work that involves math is becoming increasingly 41 for both citizens and job applicantsHow many of us feel incapable, rather than poorly taught, when we are faced with the difficulties of math? How many children who struggled to grasp math concepts were led to fell stupid?42 it to spoken or written language. When you make a mistake, a teacher corrects the part that is wrong. And then you proceed. With math, if you don't have the correct result, it is typically treated as wrong. And, as mistake after mistake 43 , too many students simply give up: I can't do math. But math is not about intelligence. It's a language that too many people never learn, often because the education process 44 the number of ways that a given person can arrive at a given solution. That's not a failure of children to learn. That's a failure of 45 . It's a failure of the school. We should not blame the student. (These are children, after all.)Part of the challenge is to 46 the gaps in knowledge, to clarify that the challenge is not that a student simply doesn't understand algebra(代数) or trigonometry(三角学) or whatever. There may be a particular basic concept that stands 47 of going forward in math, as well as other fields such as social science or engineering.Overcoming this block requires moving beyond broad industrialized education and to individualized, 48 learning that allows students to find their own way in. Show me a thousand students and I'll show you a thousand 49 pathways that they might take to achieve math success. With new digital technologies and a massive amount of data collection and analytics, we have the ability to help students identify the essential concepts they don't understand. We have data on all the students that solved a particular math problem and those that failed to solve it. We also have data on the problems they were able to solve prior to that. So as a student recognizes that they are 50 with, say, negative number concepts, they can go back and master the material— to fill in the gaps that allows them to go forward. And when they hit another tough spot? They can jump to the problems that allow them to master that concept. Others pull levers in voting machines. Americans are proud of their long history of holding free elections, but they did not invent the process.Free elections were held in Athens, Greece, 2400 years ago. Some Europeans took part in local free elections during the Middle Ages. The secret ballot was first used in 1858 in Australia.Today, voting is a new experience for many of the world’s peoples. Since World II, many who never had a voice in their government now take part in free elections. When India held its first national elections in 1951 and 1952, the process was so complicated that it took four months. Few people could read, so the ballots bore pictures that stood for the different parties. People who wanted to vote for Gandhi’s Congress party, for example, put an X under the picture of yoked oxen.In our hemisphere , there are also voters who cannot read.
