The system software which is also called background software controls computer hardware. The most popular system software is the operating system which all computers use. It handles such details as running programs, storing data and programs, and processing data. There are several types of operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 98, and Windows 2000, Windows NT, etc. Windows XP is the most updated operating system for today’s microcomputer users. Figure below shows the relationships among them.
