Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year. It starts on the 1st and ends on the 15th of lunar January. Spring Festival celebrates the coming of spring. Several days before the New Year, every family prepares rich food, buys new clothes, and cleans the house. Many families buy or write Spring Festival couplets and put them on the door. People believe that everything must be new and clean for the Spring Festival celebration so that the New Year will bring happiness and good luck. In China, red represents luck.

On New Year’s eve, people set off fireworks from around midnight to see out the end of the previous year and welcome in the New Year, called “shǒusuì” .“suì”means year. On the first day of the New Year people usually stay at home. On the 2nd day people get up early and exchange New Year’s greetings with relatives, friends, neighbors, etc.

This money is given to children for good luck . People put New Year scrolls on the wall for good fortune . 【词汇突破】 元宵节:the Lantern Festival 特色小吃:special food 糯米:glutinous rice 内陷:fillings 家庭团聚圆满:family unity and completeness 猜灯谜:guess riddles attached to the lanterns 文学典故:literary allusions 知识份子:educated class 踩高跷:stilt-walking 敲鼓:drumming 舞龙狮:dragon and lion dancing 【参考译文】 Like most Chinese festivals, the Lantern Festival has its own special food, called “tang yuan”. These are round, glutinous rice dumplings with sweet or spicy fillings. The dumplings are said to symbolize both the first full moon and family utility and completeness. Part of the lantern festival tradition involves a game to guess riddles attached to the lanterns. In the old days the riddles were obscure literary allusions to the Chinese classics and so were mainly the preserve of the educated classes. Stilt-walking, drumming and dragon and lion dancing are the main entertainment forms of the Lantern Festival.
