Most modern computers are used to solve problems in many fields.

However, the early computers were not nearly as useful. They

were big and expensive and the work they did was less valuable.

The first computers were invented in the early 1940s. During

World War II, the U.S. government needed to solve problems

quickly. They asked scientists to make a machine that would be

able to help them. The scientists built a computer named ENIAC.
