I already have all the credits I need to graduate.A: So you ’ll be taking courses just for the sake of learning.B: That will be a nice change of pace 〔改变习惯、兴趣,变换口味〕, won’t it?31. What was Frank doing at the beginning of the conversation?32. What does the woman suggest that Frank do?33. What does Frank say about his academic status?34-38A: It ’s important that you all understdanthat quartz heaters operate on a totally different principlethan common convection heaters. Yes?B: Could you give us an example of a convection heater?A: Ok. But first you tell me what convection means?B: Um, well, you said in the last class, I think, that convection is the transference of heat by aliquid or a gas.A: Right, a heater is using convection when it warms the air in a room. And the air in turn warmsthe people and objects in the room. A hot-water radiator, a stove and a forced air furnace are allconvection heaters. A quartz heater on the other hand, heats the objects and people in a roomwithout heating the air. It does this by producing radiation heat that travels like light waves. Whenthe quartz crystal in a heater vibrates at a particular frequency, its energy is turned into infraredradiation. The radiation is then directed at objects by means of a reflector. If that ’clsear, let ’ smove on to how room design can affect heating efficiency.34. What is the main topic of the discussion?35. What had the instructor probably been discussing in the previous class?36. What does the instructor ask the student?37. According to the instructor, how was the quartz heater different from other types of heaters?38. What is the purpose of a reflector on a quartz heater?Part C39-42As a result of rising university costs, many students are finding it necessary to take on part-timejob. To make finding those jobs easier, the placement services put together a listing of what ’ savailable locally. For some students, these part-time jobs could lead to full time work aftergraduation, as they may offer experience in their own field, be that finance, marketing or evenmanagement. For example, National Saving Bank offers a work on a half time basis. That twenty ’s hours a week. Retail stores and restaurants have positions requiring fewer hours. Even less time isexpected of those providing child-care. We have a number of families registered with us who werelooking for baby sitters for as few as 4 hours a week. For students who prefer outdoor work, thereare seasonal positions right on campus, working with the gardening and landscaping 〔景观美化〕teams. These often require the most time and are the least flexible in terms of scheduling. To see acomplete list of these and other available jobs, including the salary offered and the hours required, stop by our office. Oh, and be sure to bring a resume with you. When you find something thatinterests you, we ’ll put you in touch with the person offering it. In additiono, u r counselors willgive you hints about successful interviewing.39. What is the purpose of the talk?40. What should students bring with them to the office?41. What will the counselors at the office help students do?42. What do all of the jobs have in common?43-46In this century, photographs have been really important for teaching art history. I ’ll showI mean in a moment with some photographs taken by Peter and Paul Julie. The work of these twophotographers has been a very useful source for studying the art produced in the United Statesfrom 1896 to the present. Peter and Paul Julie were not artists. But they were a regular part of theNew York art theme〔主题〕. They took over a hundred thousand photographs which document thelives and work of thousands of artists. Peter Julie is known as a pioneer in this field of artphotography. Georgia O’keefeand other famous artists sought him out to take pictures of theirwork. His specialty was photographing paintings. His son Paul photographed sculptures. Some oftheir most important photos are the ones of works of art that have since been destroyed. Oneexample is a photo that we ’ll look at today. Would someontheegleigthts please? Thanks. Thisslide is from a photograph of a painting by Edward Hopper called Corn Belt city. The painting wasexhibited only two or three times before it was destroyed in a fire. Without the Julie photograph,no visual record of the work would exist. Although the Julies mostly photographed the work ofpainters and sculptors, they also occasionally photographed architectural subjects. They did quite afew photos of buildings by John Russell Pope. And we ’re going to look a x t t o.ne of those ne43. What does the professor mainly discuss?44. What did Peter Julie do for Georgia O ’keefe?45. According to the professor, what was the specialty of Peter Julie ’s son, Paul?46. Why does the professor mention the photograph of the painting Corn Belt city?47-50Do you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not accustomed to?Cool climates vegetables like asparagus are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. InHawaii, marine engineers have been able to actually convince such vegetables that they are livingin cooler climates. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have beenusing is very simply cold seawater. How do they use it? They placed pipes in the soil and the coldwater flowing through them cools the earth. This stimulates plant growth and enables gardeners intropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also, some of these pipes are exposed to theair and they condense moisture and thus irrigate the gardens. What is especially appealing aboutthis process is that nothing damaging to the natural environment is being used. Another innovativeuse for cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire westcoast of the United States could be air- conditioned using seawater. We ’ll be back to discuss that possibility after this commercial message.47. What is the report mainly about?48. What does the new system enable farmers to do?49. How were the pipes used in Hawaii?50. Why does the speaker mention air-conditioning?97年5月托福听力文字If winter comes, can spring be far behind?Part A1. 录音缺失W: Thanks a lot, this scarf will be perfect with my blue jacket.M: Made a good choice, did I?Q: What does the man mean?2. I ’d like to talk to you about a research project that I thought youmight be interested in. A friend of mine is working in Yellow Stone National Park this summer.B: Yellow Stone! I ’ve always wanted to spend sometime out Wyoming 〔怀俄明州〕.A: Wait till you hear what the project is. She ’s working with the buffalo population. The herds have been increasing in size lately which is good in theory.B: Yeah. But I though they were in endanger of becoming extinct.A: Well, apparently, because of all the winter tourists, paths are created in the snow.More buffalo survived in the harsh winters because the paths made it easier for the buffalo tomove around and find food. But it turns out that some of the herds are infected with the bacteria.B: Oh, yeah. I heard about that. A blue ⋯A: A blue seller aborters.B: Right. It ’s been around for quite a while.A: Yes, it has. And because the buffalo population is increasing, they ’ve been roaming more t usual. And the disease ’s begun to s t h p e r e c a a d t tl o e ranches that border the park.B: That ’s bad news. Isn’t that the disease that causes animals to abort〔流产〕t heir young?A: Yes. And it ’s caused a lot of controversy. Some of the ranchers even want to destroy the buffaloherds.B: That ’s awful! H e a v t h e y made much progress with the research?A: So far, they ’ve been collecting tissue samples from dead buffalo to see if the bacteria is present.B: I ’ll really be interested in working on this. You know I ’ve been researching diseased animalpopulation.A: That ’s why I thought of you. I took the liberty of mentioning your name to my friend. She’s hoping you ’ll be able to spend the whole summer out there.B: Well, I was going to work on my thesis a lot in July. But I ’m sure my adviser wouldn ’t wantme to pass up〔拒绝〕this opportunity.83. What did the professor want to talk to Ann about?84. According to the professor, why is the buffalo population increasing?85. Why does the professor think Ann would be interested in going to Yellow Stone?86. How will Ann probably spend the summer?Part C39-41Welcome to Everglades〔沼泽地〕National Park〔没记错的话,应该是位于佛州〕. TheEverglades is a watery plain covered with saw grass that ’s a home to numerous species of plantsand wild life. And one and half million acres that ’s too big to see it all today. But this tour willoffer you a good sampling. Our tour bus will stop first at Tailor Slue. This is a good place to startbecause it ’s a home to many of the plants and animals typically associated with the everglades. You’ll see m a y n exotic birds and of course a world famous alligators. Don ’t worry. There ’s aboardwalk〔木板路〕that goes across the marsh, so you can look down at the animals in the waterfrom a safe distance. The boardwalk is high enough to give you a great view of the saw grassprairie〔大草原〕. From there we ’ll head at some other marshy and even jungle-like areas thatfeature wonderful tropical plant life. For those of you who ’d like a close view of the saw grass prairie, you might consider running a canoe sometime during your visit here. However, don ’this unless you have a very good sense of direction and can negotiate your way through tall grass. We hate to have to come looking for you.〔我们可不想去找你,意为不要走丢〕You have a goodfortune of being here in the winter, the best time of the year to visit. During the spring and summerthe mosquitoes will just about to eat you alive〔生吃了你〕. Right now, they are not so bothersome, but you’ll soon want to use an insect repellent 〔驱虫剂〕.87. What is the main purpose of the tour?88. What does the speaker imply about pedaling across the water in a canoe?89. Why is it good to visit the everglades in the winter?42-46Thank you. It ’s great to see so many o y f ou i nterested in this series on survival in outer space. Please excuse the cameras. We are being radio taped for the local TV stations. TonightI ’to talk about the most basic aspect of survival —the space suit. When most of you imagine anastronaut, that’s probably the first thing that comes to mind 〔头脑中闪现〕, right? Well, withoutspace suits, it would not be possible for us to survive in space. For example, outer space is avacuum. There’s no gravity or air pressure. Without protection, a body would explode 〔爆炸〕.What’s more, we’d cook in the sun or freeze in the shade with temperature ’s ranging from atoasty 300 degrees above to a cool 300 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The space suit that NASAhas developed is truly a marvel. This photo enlargement here is a left side ’s image of an actualspace suit worn by astronauts on the last space shuttle mission. This part is the torso 〔躯干〕. It’s made of seven extremely durable layers. This thick insulation protects against temperatureextremes and radiation. Next is what they call a bladder of oxygen. That ’s a inflatable〔膨胀的〕sack filled with oxygen to simulate atmospheric pressure. This bladder presses against the bodywith the same force as the earth atmospheric sea level. The innermost layers provide liquidcooling and ventilation. Despite all the layers, the suit is flexible allowing free movement, so wecan work. Another really sophisticated part of the space suit is the helmet. I brought one along toshow you. Can I have a volunteer come and demonstrate?90. What is the speaker ’s main purpose?91. What will cause an unprotected human body to explode in outer space?92. Where is the bladder of oxygen located?93. What does the speaker show the audience as she describes the main part of the space suit?94. What will probably happen next?47-50Good evening. My name is Pam Jones and on behalf of the modern dance club, I ’ldike towel come you to tonight ’s program. The club is pleased to present the TV version of the Catherine Wheel, Twyla Tharp ’s rock ballet. This video version of the ballet has been even more successfulwith audiences than the original theater production. It includes some animation, slow motion andstop action phrases that really help the audience understand the dance. The title of the piece refersto Saint Catherine, who died on a wheel in 307 AD. Nowadays, a Catherine wheel is also a kind offirework that looks something like a pinwheel. Any way, the dance is certainly full of fireworks. You’ll see how Twyla Tharp explores one family ’s attempt to confront the violence in modern life. The central symbol of the work is a pineapple. But exactly what it represents has always created alot of controversy. As you watch, see if you can figure it out. The music for this piece is full of therhythmic energy of rock music. It was composed by David Burn of the rock band Talking Heads. And the lead dancer in this version was Sara Radnor who is perfectly suited to Tharp ’s adventurous choreography〔舞台舞蹈〕. Following the video, dance teacher Mary Parker will leadthe discussion about the symbolism Mr. Tharp used. We hope you can stay for that. So, enjoytonight ’s video and thank you for your support.95. What is the purpose of the talk?96. Why was the video version of the dance more successful than the theater production?97. What kind of music is the dance performed to?98. What will probably be included in the discussion after the program?97年8月托福听力文字Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more importantthan any one thing? . ---------------Abraham LincolnPart A99. Looks like you got some sun this weekend.B: Yeah, I guess so. I spent the weekend at the beach.A: Oh, yeah? That's great! Where did you stay?B: Some friends of my parents live out there. And they invited me for as long as I wanted to stay. A: So, what do you doing back here already?B: Oh, I have a paper I need to work on. And I just couldn't do any serious studying at the beach. A: I don't blame it. So, what did you do out there? I mean, besides lie out in the sun, obviously. B: I jogged up and down the beach and I played some volleyball. You know, I never realize how hard it is to run on sand. I couldn't even get through a whole game before I had to sit down. It's much easier to run on the wet sand near the water.A: Not to mention cooler. Did you go swimming?B: I wanted to, but they said the water isn't warm enough for that until a couple of months from now. So I just wetted in up to my knees(涉水于过膝深的地方).A: It all sounds so relaxing. I wish I could get away to the beach like that.B: It looks like you could use it. Don't tell me you spent the weekend in the library again.31. How did the woman spend last weekend?32. Why did the woman come home so soon?33. Why did the woman have to stop playing in the volleyball game?34. Why didn't the woman go swimming?35-38A: Thanks for stopping by, Ann. I'd like to talk to you about a research project that I thought you might be interested in. A friend of mine is working in Yellow Stone National Park this summer. B: Yellow Stone! I've always wanted to spend some time out Wyoming(怀俄明州).A: Wait till you hear what the project is. She's working with the buffalo population. The herds have been increasing in size lately which is good in theory.B: Yeah. But I thought they were in endanger of becoming extinct.A: Well, apparently, because of all the winter tourists, paths are created in the snow.More buffalo survived in the harsh winters because the paths made it easier for the buffalo to move around and find food. But it turns out that some of the herds are infected with the bacteria. B: Oh, yeah. I heard about that. A blue…A: A blue seller abutters.B: Right. It's been around for quite a while.A: Yes, it has. And because the buffalo population is increasing, they've been roaming more than usual. And the disease's begun to spread to the cattle ranches that border the park.B: That's bad news. Isn't that the disease that causes animals to abort(流产)their young?A: Yes. And it's caused a lot of controversy. Some of the ranchers even want to destroy the buffalo herds.B: That's awful! Have they made much progress with the research?A: So far, they've been collecting tissue samples from dead buffalo to see if the bacteria is present.B: I'll really be interested in working on this. You know I've been researching diseased animal population.A: That's why I thought of you. I took the liberty of mentioning your name to my friend. She's hoping you'll be able to spend the whole summer out there.B: Well, I was going to work on my thesis a lot in July. But I'm sure my adviser wouldn't want me to pass up(拒绝)this opportunity.35. What did the professor want to talk to Ann about?36. According to the professor, why is the buffalo population increasing?37. Why does the professor think Ann would be interested in going to Yellow Stone?38. How will Ann probably spend the summer?Part C39-41Welcome to Everglades(沼泽地)National Park(没记错的话,应该是位于佛州). The Everglades is a watery plain covered with saw grass that's a home to numerous species of plants and wild life. And one and half million acres that's too big to see it all today. But this tour will offer you a good sampling. Our tour bus will stop first at Tailor Slue. This is a good place to start because it's a home to many of the plants and animals typically associated with the everglades. You'll see many exotic birds and of course a world famous alligators. Don't worry. There's a boardwalk(木板路)that goes across the marsh, so you can look down at the animals in the water from a safe distance. The boardwalk is high enough to give you a great view of the saw grass prairie(大草原). From there we'll head at some other marshy and even jungle-like areas that feature wonderful tropical plant life. For those of you who'd like a close view of the saw grass prairie, you might consider running a canoe sometime during your visit here. However, don't do this unless you have a very good sense of direction and can negotiate your way through tall grass. We hate to have to come looking for you.(我们可不想去找你,意为不要走丢)You have a good fortune of being here in the winter, the best time of the year to visit. During the spring and summer the mosquitoes will justabout to eat you alive(生吃了你). Right now, they are not so bothersome, but you'll soon want to use an insect repellent(驱虫剂).39. What is the main purpose of the tour?40. What does the speaker imply about pedaling across the water in a canoe?41. Why is it good to visit the everglades in the winter?42-46Thank you. It's great to see so many of you interested in this series on survival in outer space. Please excuse the cameras. We are being radio taped for the local TV stations. Tonight I'm going to talk about the most basic aspect of survival—the space suit. When most of you imagine an astronaut, that's probably the first thing that comes to mind(头脑中闪现), right? Well, without space suits, it would not be possible for us to survive in space. For example, outer space is a vacuum. There's no gravity or air pressure. Without protection, a body would explode(爆炸). What's more, we'd cook in the sun or freeze in the shade with temperatures ranging from a toasty 300 degrees above to a cool 300 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The space suit that NASA has developed is truly a marvel. This photo enlargement here is a left side's image of an actual space suit worn by astronauts on the last space shuttle mission. This part is the torso(躯干). It's made of seven extremely durable layers. This thick insulation protects against temperature extremes and radiation. Next is what they call a bladder of oxygen. That's a inflatable(膨胀的)sack filled with oxygen to simulate atmospheric pressure. This bladder presses against the body with the same force as the earth atmospheric sea level. The innermost layers provide liquid cooling and ventilation. Despite all the layers, the suit is flexible allowing free movement, so we can work. Another really sophisticated part of the space suit is the helmet. I brought one along to show you. Can I have a volunteer come and demonstrate?42. What is the speaker's main purpose?43. What will cause an unprotected human body to explode in outer space?44. Where is the bladder of oxygen located?45. What does the speaker show the audience as she describes the main part of the space suit?46. What will probably happen next?47-50Good evening. My name is Pam Jones and on behalf of the modern dance club, I'd like to welcome you to tonight's program. The club is pleased to present the TV version of the Catherine Wheel, Twyla Tharp's rock ballet. This video version of the ballet has been even more successful with audiences than the original theater production. It includes some animation, slow motion and stop action phrases that really help the audience understand the dance. The title of the piece refers to Saint Catherine, who died on a wheel in 307 AD. Nowadays, a Catherine wheel is also a kind of firework that looks something like a pinwheel. Anyway, the dance is certainly full of fireworks. You'll see how Twyla Tharp explores one family's attempt to confront the violence in modern life. The central symbol of the work is a pineapple. But exactly what it represents has always created a lot of controversy. As you watch, see if you can figure it out. The music for this piece is full of the rhythmic energy of rock music. It was composed by David Burn of the rock band Talking Heads. And the lead dancer in this version was Sara Radnor who is perfectly suited to Tharp's adventurous choreography(舞台舞蹈). Following the video, dance teacher Mary Parker will lead the discussion about the symbolism Mr. Tharp used. We hope you can stay for that. So, enjoy tonight's video and thank you for your support.47. What is the purpose of the talk?48. Why was the video version of the dance more successful than the theater production?49. What kind of music is the dance performed to?50. What will probably be included in the discussion after the program?。
TOEFL老托福听力PartC原文精选5篇老托福听力PartC原文1At last month's meeting you asked me to draw up a report about the possibility of keeping the student center open twenty-four hours a day.在上个月的会议上你们要求我起草一个报告,关于保持学生中心每天24小时开放的可能性。
I decided that the best way to assess the need for expanded hours was to talk to the people who were still in the student center at closing time.我判断评估增加小时数的需求的最好方法是与在关闭时间依然在学生中心里面的人谈谈。
First, over the course of the two weeks, I interviewed more than fifty students as they left the student center at its regular closing time of twelve midnight.首先,在过去两周的进程中,我面谈了超过五十名同学,当他们在通常的午夜12点的关闭时间离开学生中心时。
About eighty percent of them said they would prefer that the center stay open later.他们中的大约百分之八十说,他们更喜欢中心保持开放更晚些。
Of the three main uses of the center—eating in the snack bar, recreation in the game room or watching TV, and studying by far the most popular late night activity is—and this may surprise you—studying.中心的三大用途——在快餐部吃东西,在娱乐室消遣或看电视,以及学习,目前为止最普遍的深夜活动是——这也许会让你们很惊讶——学习。

After each part of the series I have to talk to her and the other students on the phone, you know, about our ideas. How was the distance-learning course different from traditional courses?37. What do the speakers agree is the major advantage of the distance-learning course?38. Why did the woman decide to enroll in the distance-learning course?39. What does the man think is a disadvantage of distance learning?Part CQuestions 40-43So, uh, as Jim said, James Polk was the elev enth president. And, um, my report’s about the next president Zachary Taylor. Taylor was elected in 1849. It’s surprising because he was the first president that didn’t have any previous political experience. The main reason he was chosen as a candidate was because he was a war hero. In the army his men called him old, rough and ready, I guess because of his rough edges(刀口). He was kind of blunt and he didn’t really look like a military hero. He liked to do things like wearing civilian clothes instead of uniform even in battle. And he was so short and plump that he had to be lifted up on his horse. But he did win a lot of battles and he became more and more popular. So the Whig party(辉格党)decided to nominate him for the presidency, even though no one knew anything about where he stood on the issues.I couldn’t find much about his accomplishments, probably because he was only in office about a year and a half before he died. But one thing, he pushed for the development of the transcontinental railroad because he thought it was important to form a linkwith the west coast. There was a lot of wealth in California and Oregon(俄勒冈州)from commerce and minerals and stuff. Also he’s established an agricultural bureau (局)in the department of the Interior and promoted more government aid to agriculture. Well, that’s about all I found. Like I said he died in office in 1850, so his vice president took over. And that’s the next report. So, thank you.40. Why was Zachary Taylor chosen by his party as a candidate for president?41. According to the speaker, why is it surprising that Taylor was elected president?42. Why did Taylor accomplish relatively little as president?43. What will the class probably do next?Questions 44-46I want to welcome each and every balloon enthusiast in Philadelphia. Thank you for coming here this morning to commemorate(纪念)the first balloon voyage in the United States. On January ninth, 1793, at ten o’clock in the morning, a silk bal loon lifted into the skies above this city, which was at that time the capital of the country. According to the original records of the flight, the voyage lasted 46 minutes, from its departure in Philadelphia to its landing across the Delaware(特拉华)River in New Jersey. Though our pilots today will try to approximate the original landing site, they are at the mercy of(受…支配)the winds, so who know s where they’ll drift off to. Even the balloonist in 1793 experienced some uncertain weather that day. There were clouds, fog and mist in various directions. Our reenactment(再扮演)promises to be nothing less than spectacular. The yellow balloon directly behind me is five storeys high. It’s inflated with helium(氦), unlike the original, which was filled with hydrogen and unbeknownst to the pilot, potentially explosive. Gas filled models are pretty uncommon now because of the extremely high cost. So the eighty other balloons in today’s lunch are hot air heated by propane(丙烷)burners. These balloons are from all over the country.44. What is the purpose of the balloon lunch?45. What problem might today’s pilots encounter?46. What does the speaker imply about helium balloons?Questions 47-50I’m glad you brought up the question of our investigations into the makeup of the earth’s interior. In fact, since this is the topic of your reading assignment for next time, let me spend these last few minutes of class talking about it.There were several important discoveries in the early part of this century that help geologists develop a more accurate picture of the earth’s interior. The first key discovery had to do with seismic waves. Remember, they are the vibrations caused by earthquakes. Well, scientists found that they travel thousands of miles through the earth’s interior. This finding enabled geologists to study the inter parts of the earth. You see, these studies revealed that these vibrations were of two types: compression or P waves(纵波)and shear or S waves(横波). And researchers found that P waves travel through both liquids and solids while S waves travel only through solid matter. In 1906, a British geologist discovered that P waves slowed down at a certain depth but kept traveling deeper. On the other hand, S waves either disappeared or were reflected back.So he concluded that the depth marked the boundary between a solid mantle and the liquid core. Three years later, another boundary was discovered, that between the mantle and the earth’s crust. There are still a lot to be learned about the earth. For instance, geologists know that the core is hot. Evidence of this is the molten lava(熔岩)that flows out of volcanoes. But we are still not sure what the source of the heat is.47. What is the purpose of the talk?48. What important discovery about seismic waves does the instructor mention?49. What did the study of seismic vibrations help geologists learn more about?50. What did P and S waves help scientists discover about the layers of the earth?。

1997听力原文PART ⅡDICTATIONLegal Age for MarriageThroughout the United States, the legal age for marriage shows some difference. The most common age without parents’ consent is eighteen for both females and males. However, persons who are under age in their home state can get married in another state, and then return to the home state legally married. Each state issues its own marriage license. Both residents and nonresidents are qualified for such a license. The fees and ceremonies vary greatly from state to state. Most states, for instance, have a blood test requirement, but a few do not. Most states permit either a civil or religious ceremony, but a few require th e ceremony to be religious. In most states, a waiting period is required before the license is issued. This period is from one to five days depending on the state. A three-day wait is the most common. In some states, there’s no required waiting period.PART ⅢLISTENING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A STATEMENT1. It is true that no pressure, no motivation. But, how about much mor e pressure? Different people have different views of point. As for me, I firmly think too much pressure in essence prevents people from achieving academic accomplishment rather than do good to us.The causes are obvious. Firstly, in our opening society, people have to acquaint with a va st number of new things so as to obtain better lives, which request them transfering more times from academic studies to other fields, lessening their academic pressure. Secondly, more pressure from academic studies will make people produce mental problems such as s tress and qualm, in the long run, which will make academic studies become impossible. Therefore in my opinion, those who would achieve academic accomplishment must not be given more pressure. It is a good academic air that does good to us.SECTION B[参考范文]Dear Victoria,We write to apologize for having unintentionally neglected to invite you, our close friend, to show up our party. The designation of an areas 5) a marine sanctuary indicates that it is a protected area, just as a national park is. Peopleare permitted to visit and observe there, but living organisms and their environments may not be harmed or removed. The National Marine Sanctuaries Program is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a branch of the United States Department of Commerce.10) Initially, 70 sites were proposed as candidates for sanctuary status. Two and a half decadeslater, only fifteen sanctuaries had been designated, with half of these established after1978. They range in size from the very small (less than I square kilometer) Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary in American Samoa to the Monterey Bay National MarineSanctuary in California, extending over 15,744 square kilometers.15) The National Marine Sanctuaries Program is a crucial part of new managementpractices in which whole communities of species, and not just individual species, areoffered some degree of protection from habitat degradation and overexploitation. Only in this way can a reasonable degree of marine species diversity be maintained in a setting that also maintains the natural interrelationships that exist among these species.20) Several other types of marine protected areas exist in the United States and othercountries. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System, managed by the UnitedStates government, includes 23 designated and protected estuaries. Outside the United States, marine protected-area programs exist as marine parks, reserves, and preserves.Over 100 designated areas exist around the periphery of the Carbbean Sea. Others range 25) from the well-known Australian Great Barrer Reef Marine Park to lesser-known parksin countries such as Thailand and Indonesia, where tourism is placing growing pressures on fragile coral reef systems. As state, national, and international agencies come torecognize the importance of conserving marine biodiversity, marine projected areas.whether as sanctuaries, parks, or estuarine reserves, will play an increasingly important role in preserving that diversity.1. Sometimes artisans transformed material provided by the customer wove cloth of yam spun at the farm from the wool of the family sheep; made chairs or tables 10) from wood cut in the customer’s own woodlot; produced shoes or leather breeches fromcow, deer, or sheepskin tanned on the farm.Like their farming neighbors, rural artisans were part of an economy seen, by one historian, as “an orchestra conducted by nature.” Some tasks could not be done in the winter, other had to be put off during harvest time, and still others waited on raw materials that were 15) only produced seasonally. As the days grew shorter, shop hours kept pace, since few artisanscould afford enough artificial light to continue work when the Sun went down. To the best of their ability, colonial artisans tried to keep their shops as efficient as possible and toregularize their schedules and methods of production for the best return on their investment in time, tools, and materials, While it is pleasant to imagine a woodworker, for example, 20) carefully matching lumber, joining a chest together without resort to nails or glue, andapplying all thought and energy to carving beautiful designs on the finished piece, the time required was not justified unless the customer was willing to pay extra for the quality—and few in rural areas were, Artisans, therefore, often found it necessary to employ asmany shortcuts and economics as possible while still producing satisfactory products.10. Some functions result directly from the ingenuity of the citizenry, but most functions result from the needs of the local area and of the surrounding hinterland (the region that supplies goods to thecity and to which the city furnishes services and other goods). Geographers often make 5) a distinction between the situation and the site of a city. Situation refers to the generalposition in relation to the surrounding region, whereas site involves physicalcharacteristics of the specific location. Situation is normally much more important tothe continuing prosperity of a city. if a city is well situated in regard to its hinterland, its development is much more likely to continue. Chicago, for example, possesses an almost 10) unparalleled situation: it is located at the southern end of a huge lake that forces east-westtransportation lines to be compressed into its vicinity, and at a meeting of significant land and water transport routes. It also overlooks what is one of the world’s finest largefarming regions. These factors ensured that Chicago would become a great city regardless of the disadvantageous characteristics of the available site, such as being prone to flooding 15) during thunderstorm activity.Similarly, it can be argued that much of New York City’s importance stems from its early and continuing advantage of situation. Philadephia and Boston both originated at about the same time as New York and shared New York’s location at the western end of one of the world’s most important oceanic trade routes, but only New York possesses an 20) easy-access functional connection (the Hudson-Mohawk lowland) to the vast Midwesternhinterland. This account does not alone explain New York’s primacy, but it does include several important factors. Among the many aspects of situation that help to explain why some cities grow and others do not, original location on a navigable waterway seemsparticularly applicable. Of course, such characteristic as slope, drainage, power25) resources, river crossings, coastal shapes, and other physical characteristics help todetermine city location, but such factors are normally more significant in early stagesof city development than later.第 11 页共 17 页18. After each part of the series I have to talk to her and the other students on the phone, you know, about our ideas. It must really help with their schedules, not to mention how it will cut down on traffic.B: You know, last year my department did a survey and they found out that 80 percent of all psychology majors were employed. That’s why they came up with the program.Look, I’ll be working three days a week next semester and it was either cut back on(减少) my classes or try this out.A: The only thing is: doesn’t it se em impersonal though? I mean, I miss having class discussions and hearing what other people think.B: Well, I guess that’s why phone contact’s important. But one thing, he pushed for the development of the transcontinental railroad because he thought it was important to form a link with the west coast. Gas filled models are pretty uncommon now because of the extremely high cost.So the eighty other balloons in today’s lunch are hot air heated by propane(丙烷)burners. On the other hand, S waves either disappeared or were reflected back. So he concluded that the depth marked the boundary between a solid mantle and the liquid core.

Yes?B: Could you give us an example of a convection heater?A: Ok. But first you tell me what convection means?B: Um, well, you said in the last class, I think, that convection is the transference of heat by a liquid or a gas.A: Right, a heater is using convection when it warms the air in a room. And the air in turn warms the people and objects in the room. A hot-water radiator, a stove and a forced air furnace are all convection heaters. A quartz heater on the other hand, heats the objects and people in a room without heating the air. It does this by producing radiation heat that travels like light waves. When the quartz crystal in a heater vibrates at a particular frequency, its energy is turned into infrared radiation. The radiation is then directed at objects by means of a reflector. If that’s clear, let’s move on to how room design can affect heating efficiency.34. What is the main topic of the discussion?35. What had the instructor probably been discussing in the previous class?36. What does the instructor ask the student?37. According to the instructor, how was the quartz heater different from other types of heaters?38. What is the purpose of a reflector on a quartz heater?Part C39-42As a result of rising university costs, many students are finding it necessary to take on part-time job. To make finding those jobs easier, the placement services put together a listing of what’s available locally. For some students, these par t-time jobs could lead to full time work after graduation, as they may offer experience in their own field, be that finance, marketing or even management. For example, National Saving Bank offers a work on a half time basis. That’s twenty hours a week. Ret ail stores and restaurants have positions requiring fewer hours. Even less time is expected of those providing child-care. We have a number of families registered with us who were looking for baby sitters for as few as 4 hours a week. For students who prefer outdoor work, there are seasonal positions right on campus, working with the gardening and landscaping(景观美化)teams. These often require the most time and are the least flexible in terms of scheduling. To see a complete list of these and other available jobs, including the salary offered and the hours required, stop by our office. Oh, and be sure to bring a resume with you. When you find something that interests you, we’ll put you in touch with the person offering it. In addition, our counselors will give you hints about successful interviewing.39. What is the purpose of the talk?40. What should students bring with them to the office?41. What will the counselors at the office help students do?42. What do all of the jobs have in common?43-46In this ce ntury, photographs have been really important for teaching art history. I’ll show you what I mean in a moment with some photographs taken by Peter and Paul Julie. The work of these two photographers has been a very useful source for studying the art produced in the United States from 1896 to the present. Peter and Paul Julie were not artists. But they were a regular part of the New York art theme(主题). They took over a hundred thousand photographs which document the lives and work of thousands of artists. Pe ter Julie is known as a pioneer in this field of art photography. Georgia O’keefe and other famous artists sought him out to take pictures of their work. His specialty was photographing paintings. His son Paul photographed sculptures. Some of their most important photos are the ones of works of art that have since been destroyed. One example is a photo that we’ll look at today. Would someone get the lights please? Thanks. This slide is from a photograph of a painting by Edward Hopper called Corn Belt city. The painting was exhibited only two or three times before it was destroyed in a fire. Without the Julie photograph, no visual record of the work would exist. Although the Julies mostly photographed the work of painters and sculptors, they also occasionally photographed architectural subjects. They did quite a few photos of buildings by John Russell Pope. And we’re going to look at one of those next.43. What does the professor mainly discuss?44. What did Peter Julie do for Georgia O’keefe?45. According to the professor, what was the specialty of Peter Julie’s son, Paul?46. Why does the professor mention the photograph of the painting Corn Belt city?47-50Do you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not accustomed to? Cool climates vegetables like asparagus are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii, marine engineers have been able to actually convince such vegetables that they are living in cooler climates. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is very simply cold seawater. How do they use it? They placed pipes in the soil and the cold water flowing through them cools the earth. This stimulates plant growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also, some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they condense moisture and thus irrigate the gardens. What is especially appealing about this process is that nothing damaging to the natural environment is being used. Another innovative use for cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire west coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using seawater. We’ll be back to discuss that possibility after this commercial message.47. I’d like to talk to you about a research project that I thought you might be interested in. A friend of mine is working in Yellow Stone National Park this summer.B: Yellow Stone! I’ve always wanted to spend sometime out Wyoming(怀俄明州). A: Wait till you hear what the project is. She’s working with the buffalo population. The herds have been increasing in size lately which is good in theory.B: Yeah. But I though they were in endanger of becoming extinct.A: Well, apparently, because of all the winter tourists, paths are created in the snow.More buffalo survived in the harsh winters because the paths made it easier for the buffalo to move around and find food. But it turns out that some of the herds are infected with the bacteria.B: Oh, yeah. I heard about that. A blue…A: A blue seller aborters.B: Right. It’s been around for quite a while.A: Yes, it has. And because the buffalo population is increasing, they’ve been roaming more than usual. And the disease’s begun to spread to the cattle r anches that border the park.B: That’s bad news. Isn’t that the disease that causes animals to abort(流产)their young?A: Yes. And it’s caused a lot of controversy. Some of the ranchers even want to destroy the buffalo herds.B: That’s awful! Have they made much progress with the research?A: So far, they’ve been collecting tissue samples from dead buffalo to see if the bacteria is present.B: I’ll really be interested in working on this. You know I’ve been researching diseased animal population.A: That’s wh y I thought of you. I took the liberty of mentioning your name to my friend. She’s hoping you’ll be able to spend the whole summer out there.B: Well, I was going to work on my thesis a lot in July. But I’m sure my adviser wouldn’t want me to pass up(拒绝)this opportunity.35. What did the professor want to talk to Ann about?36. According to the professor, why is the buffalo population increasing?37. Why does the professor think Ann would be interested in going to Yellow Stone?38. How will Ann probably spend the summer?Part C39-41Welcome to Everglades(沼泽地) National Park(没记错的话,应该是位于佛州). The Everglades is a watery plain covered with saw grass that’s a home to numerous species of plants and wild life. And one and half million acres that’s too big to see it all today. But this tour will offer you a good sampling. Our tour bus will stop first at Tailor Slue. This is a good place to start because it’s a home to many of the plants and animals typically associated with the everglades. You’ll see many exotic birds and of course a world famous alligators. Don’t worry. There’s a boardwalk(木板路)that goes across the marsh, so you can look down at the animals in the water from a safe distance. The boardwalk is high enough to give you a great view of the saw grass prairie(大草原). From there we’ll head at some other marshy and even jungle-like areas that feature wonderful tropical plant life. For those of you who’d like a close view of the saw grass prairie, you might consider running a canoe sometime during your visit here. However, don’t do this unless you have a very good sense of direction and can negotiate your way through tall grass. We hate to have to come looking for you.(我们可不想去找你,意为不要走丢)You have a good fortune of being here in the winter, the best time of the year to visit. During the spring and summer the mosquitoes will just about to eat you alive(生吃了你). Right now, they are not so bothersome, but you’ll soon want to use an insect repellent(驱虫剂).39. What is the main purpose of the tour?40. What does the speaker imply about pedaling across the water in a canoe?41. Why is it good to visit the everglades in the winter?42-46Thank you. It’s great to see so many of you interested in this series on survival in outer space. Please excuse the cameras. We are being radio taped for the local TV stations. Tonight I’m going to talk about the most basic aspect of survival—the space suit. When most of you imagine an astronaut, that’s probably the first thing that comes to mind(头脑中闪现), right? Well, without space suits, it would not be possible for us to survive in space. For example, outer space is a vacuum. There’s no gravity or air pressure. Without protection, a body would explode(爆炸). What’s more, we’d cook in the sun or freeze in the shade with temperature’s ranging from a toa sty 300 degrees above to a cool 300 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The space suit that NASA has developed is truly a marvel. This photo enlargement here is a left side’s image of an actual space suit worn by astronauts on the last space shuttle mission. This part is the torso(躯干). It’s made of seven extremely durable layers. This thick insulation protects against temperature extremes and radiation. Next is what they call a bladder of oxygen. That’s a inflatable (膨胀的) sack filled with oxygen to simulate atmospheric pressure. What is the speaker’s main purpose?43. What will cause an unprotected human body to explode in outer space?44. Where is the bladder of oxygen located?45. What does the speaker show the audience as she describes the main part of the space suit?46. What will probably happen next?47-50Good evening. My name is Pam Jones and on behalf of the modern dance clu b, I’d like to welcome you to tonight’s program. The club is pleased to present the TV version of the Catherine Wheel, Twyla Tharp’s rock ballet. Any way, the dance is certainly full of fireworks. You’ll see how Twyla Tharp explores one family’s attempt to confront the violence in modern life. The central symbol of the work is a pineapple. But exactly what it represents has always created a lot of controversy. As you watch, see if you can figure it out. The music for this piece is full of the rhythmic energy of rock music. It was composed by David Burn of the rock band Talking Heads. And the lead dancer in this version was Sara Radnor who is perfectly suited to Tharp’s adventurous choreography(舞台舞蹈). Following the video, dance teacher Mary Parker will lead the discussion about the symbolism Mr. Tharp used. We hope you can stay for that. So, enjoy tonight’s video and thank you for your support. 47. What is the purpose of the talk?48. Why was the video version of the dance more successful than the theater production?49. What kind of music is the dance performed to?50. What will probably be included in the discussion after the program?97年8月托福听力文字Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more importantthan any one thing¬. ---------------Abraham LincolnPart A1.
