I live in a second-floor flat with an ancient tree right on the corner of the house. House and tree have

been here, side by side, for well over a century. No one really knows how old the tree is, but it was already there when builders started on the house at the beginning of the 1900s.

It was still rather young and flexible back then, so it easily welcomed the new structure into its path. It bent and adjusted itself to make room, and to find the space to grow big and strong and wise, which means that some hundred years later, the solid, strong branches of the tree reach around two full sides of my home. It’s covered in moss(苔藓), which is, in turn, crawling with all sorts of insects. I have never seen the insects, by the way, I just know that they’re there because of all the birds trying to pick them out. They are always hopping around, looking for this and that and singing songs.

I feel like I have become part of the ecosystem. When I’m eating breakfast or making dinner in the kitchen, I can look out and see a bird hopping around skillfully, gathering its own meal while I tend to mine. When I’m sitting in the living room, reading or drinking tea, I can suddenly find myself face to face with another bird. We’ll be staring at each other and, after some time, decide we can both carry on with our business, living side by side. Even as I write this—the large windows open to a lovely, soft evening—a white feather comes floating down by my side, probably from one of the resident pigeons.

As I don’t have the luxury of a garden, this tree makes me feel connected to the outdoors. Such is an ancient tree, a tree that is itself home to many other creatures—that feels different. It is as if it has adopted me and made me a part of its world, without ever asking for something in return. But if needs be, I know that it can count on me and I will protect it with all my strength.

24. The flat that author lives in is _________.

A. built in an ancient tree

B. hugged by a giant tree

C. decorated with branches

D. surrounded by a garden

25. In the author’s description, she implies that _________.

A. birds keep her warm company

B. she has adopted the residents.

C. moss makes her flat nice and cool

D. she has been bothered by the insects

26. What does the author really treasure?

A. A close-to-nature life.

B. A luxurious garden.

C. A spacious house.

D. A sociable neighbor.

27. Which of the following can be used to express the author’s feeling?

A. Jealous.

B. Inferior.

C. Content.

D. Passionate.

C

A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she was torn by self-criticism. “I’m at peak fitness, and I practice hard. How is this happening?” She asked.

This student believes she should be able to control the outcomes of her life by virtue of her hard work. She has a sense that hours on the field should get her exactly where she needs to go. Many students have similar mentality. When they win, they feel powerful and smart. When they fail, they are crushed by self-blame. “If my achievements are mine to control”, they reason, “my failures must be entirely my fault, too”.

We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from discomfort. But there is something else at play: a false promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.

Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mindset (思维定势)”research, which has found that praising children for effort will increase academic performance. A 2018 analysis found that while praising effort over ability may benefit economically disadvantaged students, it does not necessarily help everyone.

One possible explanation comes from Suniya Luthar, who argued in a research paper that for teens in wealthy,pressure-cooker communities, “it is not a lack of motivation and perseverance (毅力) that is the big problem. Instead, it is unhealthy perfectionism, and difficulty with backing off when they should, when the desire for achievements is over the top.” They push themselves onward in face of impossible goals. A 2007 study found that teens who refused to give up impossible goals showed higher levels of C-reaction protein, a marker of systemic inflammation(炎症) linked to heart disease and other medical conditions. A 2014 study showed a connection between the perfectionist tendencies and depression.

The cruel reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we adults should help students pursue success in healthier ways in part by redefining failure as a feature, not a bug, of learning. At Smith College where I teach, students are asked to explore how setbacks and missteps made them stronger or more effective. We

would be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of sucker-punching (意外打击) us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.

28. Why was star athlete trapped by self-blame?

A. She broke down during the match.

B. She didn’t try her best in the match.

C. She thought she should have practiced harder.

D. She believed hard work should pay off.

29. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?

A. Unhealthy perfectionism causes physical and emotional stress.

B. Praising children for effort increases academic performance.

C. Children struggle with failure due to parents’ over-protection.

D. Lack of motivation and perseverance leads to teens’ failure.

30. According to the author, adults should _________.

A. help students learn from failure

B. protect students from discomfort

C. reward students for their hard work

D. explore the cause of students’ failure

31. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?

A. Perseverance equals achievement.

B. Motivation is the key to success.

C. Success is not always under control.

D. Effort is more important than ability.

D

The belief that carbon emissions (排放) caused by human activities are merely a drop in the bucket compared to greenhouse gases generated by volcanoes has been making its way around the rumor mill for years. And while it seems to be reasonable, the science just doesn’t back it up.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the world’s volcanoes, both on land and undersea, generate about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, while our automotive and industrial activities cause some24 billion tons of CO2 emissions every year worldwide. Despite the arguments to the contrary, the facts speak for themselves: Greenhouse gas emissions from volcanoes compose less than one percent of those generated by today’s human activities.

Another indication that human emissions surpass(超过) those of volcanoes is the fact that atmospheric

CO2levels, as measured by sampling stations around the world, have gone up consistently year after year regardless of whether or not there have been major volcanic eruptions in specific years. “If it were true that individual volcanic eruptions dominated human emissions and were causing the rise in carbon dioxide concentrations, then these carbon dioxide records would be full of spikes—one for each eruption,”says Coby Beck, a journalist writing for online environmental news. “Instead, such records show a smooth and regular trend.”

Furthermore, some scientists believe that volcanic eruptions, like that of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 and Mt.Pinatubo in 1991, actually lead to short-term global cooling, not warming, as sulfur dioxide (SO2), ash and other particles in the air and stratosphere(平流层) reflect some solar energy instead of letting it into Earth’s atmosphere.SO2, which converts to sulfuric acid aerosol, when it hits the stratosphere, can linger there for as long as seven years and can exercise a cooling effect long after a volcanic eruption has taken place.

Scientists tracking the effects of the major 1991 eruption of the Philippines’ Mt. Pinatubo found that the overall effect of the blast was to cool the surface of the Earth globally by some 0.5 degrees Celsius a year later, even though rising human greenhouse gas emissions and an El Nino event caused some surface warming during the 1991-1993study period.

In an interesting twist on the issue, British researchers last year published an article in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature showing how volcanic activity may be contributing to the melting of ice caps in Antarctica but not because of any emissions, natural or man-made. Instead, scientists Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey believe that volcanoes underneath Antarctica may be melting the continents ice sheets from below, just as warming air temperatures from human-caused emissions erode them from above.

32. According to Paragraph 1, some people argue that ____________.

A. their opinion is supported by science

B. carbon emissions produced by volcanoes are increasing

C. human activities are to blame for greenhouse gases

D. volcanoes generate most of the greenhouse gases

33. What does the underlined word “spikes” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Smooth trends.

B. Sudden increases.

C. Stable regularities.

D. Sharp declines.

34. What do the scientists mentioned in this passage believe about volcanic eruptions?

A. They brought about global warming.

B. They melted the ice sheets in Antarctic from above.

C. They actually partly cooled the surface of the Earth.

D. They dominated human emissions in greenhouse effect.

35. The purpose of the passage is to __________.

A. compare the results of the studies

B. contradict a view held by some people

C. present a method of scientific researches

D. report the melting of the ice sheets in Antarctica.

Thus, the cost of this financial ignorance is very high. ___39___

What is the solution? ___40___ like reading and math, financial education must become part of the core curriculum in our schools. 2014哈尔滨市第三中学第四次高考模拟考试 第Ⅰ卷阅读题 甲必考题 一、现代文阅读( 9 分,每小题 3 分) 阅读下面的文字,完成 l——3 题 琴,其实并无古今之分,仅有中外之别。现在所谓“古琴”的说法,是为了和西方的各种琴类乐器相区分罢了,而古琴在中国绵延千万年的古代历史与传统文化中有着极重要的地位,几经浮沉,甚至一度成了鲜有人知的“奢侈艺术”。 古琴初制,历来众说份坛,作为中国最古老的弹拔乐器之一,古人将其历史远溯上古三皇时期,故今之制式曰伏羲、曰神农、曰虞舜,皆是沿以始创之功。至仲尼时,琴学也已完备,其艺也大昌。至于秦汉,琴在人们生活中更为普及,司马相知一介寒儒尚有名琴“绿绮”一张,以此琴借语文君,是为千年名曲《凤求凰》。各类曲艺中有《琴挑》一折,专述相如风流逸事。至东汉,蔡伯喈博学多艺,妙于琴音,作《游春》、《渌水》、《幽思》、《坐愁》、《秋思》诸曲,为著名的“蔡氏五弄”。另作琴学专论《琴操》一篇,广传后世,是为琴学理论之滥觞。隋唐以降,琴学更兴,不仅琴家辈出,听琴圣手亦繁盛一时。较有名者,如雷、郭、张、沈四家,蜀中九雷更是独步古今,现存唐琴“九霄环佩”即出自雷氏一门,盛唐遗音借此琴传响至今。明代士人间,无论是否善于操弹,皆悬琴一张于壁,如《长物志》所言“琴为古乐,虽不能操,亦须璧悬一床”。一般认为,此时的古琴俨然成为文人的象征。因琴学影响广泛,琴语传刻也是一时风尚。到了清代晚期琴学逐渐式徽,随看着西洋乐器及其音乐理论的进入,对于国故民乐影响甚大。 古琴的传承与教授,不同于西方乐器的记谱,而是有着自己一套独特的记谱方式——减字谱。减字谱代表的是古琴的指法,可以算得上是一段时间内行为动作的文字,是一段时间内行为动作的截取,用一种特殊的文字符号体系,是将时空运动符号化、凝固在一个文字体系之中。减字谱是中国古人伟大的创造发明之一,它并未准确地记录音符,而将动作记录,故而按弦时间的长短以及种种吟揉的动作使得古琴艺术呈现出不一样的艺术风貌,即流派的形成。 古琴在出现伊始是作为礼乐中乐器使用,但随着之后的不停演进逐渐成为文人的象征,成为文人必备的四艺之首,代表了一种自在风流。我们常常可以在古代的绘画作品中看到携琴访友或者童仆抱琴的形象。正如前文所说,古琴之于文人,不在于是否真的会弹,而在于一种形象的标榜,一种身份的标志。这和文房四宝、茶、鹤、梅、剑等等一同组成文人生活之必备元素。正如明代文彭一方“琴罢倚松玩鹤”的印文,最能反映古琴在古代文人生活中的作用与意义。 但随着时代的变化,琴作为一种乐器已经不仅仅表达了文人的意趣,还带有了一点对于古代世界追幕的情愫。 1 .下列对古琴理解有误的一项是() ( 3 分) A .古琴的历史悠久,它的记谱方式是中国古人伟大的创造发明,但后期也受到了西洋乐器及其音乐理论的影响。 B .古琴的减字谱记录的是抚琴时的动作,而抚琴者按弦时间的长短以及种种吟揉的动作并不相同,故而形成不同的流派。 C .古琴,同文房四宝、茶、鹤、梅、剑等一同组成文人生活的必备元素。明代文彭的一方印章就是最好的证明。 D .古琴出现时是作为礼乐中乐器使用的,但随后逐渐演变成为文人的象征,它代表了一种自在风流,表达了文人的意趣。

哈尔滨三中2015年第一次模拟考试 英语试卷笔试部分 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A One hometown owner in Detroit is intending to exchange his villa for the latest iPhone 6. The owner has dropped the asking price from $ 5,000 to a new iPhone 6 as the owner is desperate to sell before the tax auction (拍卖) season where ―thousands‖ of homes near foreclosure (房屋止赎权) will flood into the market, a real estate broker (房地产经纪人) called Larry Else told ABC News. ―This house is really not worth much at all,‖ Else said. The windows are broken and there is no front door. The broker himself has not been inside the home because his company has a policy of not going in unsecured houses alone. Detroit’s declining fortunes have left its population about a third of what it used to be in its peak, according to the U.S. Census Bureau(人口普查办公室). Now, the property has accrued (拖欠) more than $6,000 in back taxes (退税款) and will enter foreclosure next year if that debt is not settled. So while the owner is asking for an iPhone 6, the true cost of the sale comes from the buyer including the cost of the back taxes. That attracted great interest in the property, as Else said that he received four offers today alone. One woman said she was interested in the house for the wood. Another said that they would be willing to hand over an iPhone 5, and another offered $ 850. But Else hinted that the most likely buyer is someone who already lives on the block and put in a $ 700 bid(出价), and their familiarity with the area appeared to put them at the head of the pack. He said he expects one of the four offers to work out, and may even confirm the sale tonight. This is not the end of his bartering (物物交换) business, however, as Else said that he’s already gotten another call from a homeowner who has had trouble selling their property. 21.Why did the owner drop his price for the house? A.Because the house was too old. B.Because there is a boom in economy. C.Because he wanted to sell the house quickly. D.Because the population in Detroit is small. https://www.doczj.com/doc/ae17045052.html,rry Else hasn’t come into the house because _______. A.it is dangerous to enter it B.the owner doesn’t permit it C.he is not familiar with the area D.it will break the company’s rule 23.The house will most possibly be sold at the price of _______. A. $ 5,000 B. $ 850 C. $ 700 D. an iPhone 6 24.The passage is most probably taken from ________. A. a story book B. a news report C. an economy report D. a tourist brochure B Regardless of the fact that getting dressed in baseball caps and T-shirts are classic American style choices; the preppy(学院风格) look is what sophisticated(高雅时髦的) British youths wear. But when it comes to the best-dressed nation, neither the US nor the UK tops CNN’s list. So which country has the best fashion sense? Take a look. Italy
