Abstract
Weproposeaprobabilisticsimilaritymeasurefordirectimagematchingbasedona
Bayesiananalysisofimagedeformations.Wemodeltwoclassesofvariationinobject
appearance:intra-objectandextra-object.Theprobabilitydensityfunctionsforeach
classarethenestimatedfromtrainingdataandusedtocomputeasimilaritymeasure
basedontheaposterioriprobabilities.Furthermore,weuseanovelrepresentation
forcharacterizingimagedifferencesusingadeformabletechniqueforobtainingpixel-
wisecorrespondences.Thisrepresentation,whichisbasedonadeformable3Dmesh
inXYI-space,isthenexperimentallycomparedwithtwosimplerrepresentations:in-
tensitydifferencesandopticalflow.Theperformanceadvantageofourdeformable
matchingtechniqueisdemonstratedusingatypicallyhardtestsetdrawnfromtheUS
Army’sFERETfacedatabase.
