It is a typical example of irony. The word “benefit”, “pleasure”, and “advantage” actually mean theopposite. For the “benefit” of exercise, Oliver was whipped every mo rning in a stone yard; for the “pleasure” of society, he was carried every other day into the dinning hall and flogged as a public warning and example to the boys; and as for the “advantages” of religious consolation, he was kicked into the same apartment every evening at prayer time and listen to the boy?s prayer to be guarded against his sins and vices. The ironic statement is, in fact, a bitter denunciation and fierce attack at the brutal, inhuman treatment of the poor orphan by the workhouse authority.2.“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little,I am soulless andheartless? --- You think wrong!--- I have as much soul as you--- and full as muchheart…I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, or even of mortal flesh;---it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God?s feet, equal--- as we are!”Reference: The statement is taken from Charlotte Bronte?s masterpiece Jane Eyre. In this famous declaration, Jane proves herself a new, unconventional woman, a woman who believes in the basic human rights, in the independence and equality of people of all social classes. She is courageous enough to defy the social conventions that discriminate against the poor and the unfortunate and deprive them of their right to equality. It is not just a personal protest and declaration a governess makes to her master, but a declaration made on behalf of all the unfortunate middle-class working women, and of all the poor people in the world.3.“He flung himself into the nearest seat, and on myapproaching hurriedly toascertain if she had fainted, he gnashed at me, and foamed like a mad dog, and gathered her to him with greedy jealousy. I did not feel as if I were in the company of a cr eature of my own species…”Reference: The sentences are taken from Emily Bronte?s Wuthering Heights. It is a description of the mad, desperate love between Catherine and Heathcliff in her death scene. Heathcliff, seeing his love on the verge of death, was heart-broken. Though they two tortured each other with many a false charge, they were eager to cling to each other at this last moment. Heathcliff, in his eagerness to have her all to himself, now behaved like an animal greedily and jealously guarding his dear one or treasured prey. The terms “gnashed” and “foamed”, simple action words, vividly presents the image of a man desperate in his desire to take possession of his beloved and in his anxiety that someone would come and take her away from him.4.“Tho?/ We are not now that strength which in old days/ Moved earth and heaven;that which we are, we are;/ One equal temper of heroic hearts,/ Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will/ To strive, to speak, to find, and not to yield.”Ref erence: These lines are taken from Alfred Tennyson?s “Ulysses”. In this poem, the old Ulysses is trying to persuade his old followers into setting upon further adventurewith him again. in these lines, he argues that great strength they used to have in their past glorious days, they still have the same strong will and the same heroic spirit to go on struggling and seeking new knowledge until the end of their life. his undying heroic spirit is admirable, indeed.5.“I repeat,/ The Count your master?s known mu nificence/ Is ample warrant that nojust pretense/ Of mine for dowry will be disallowed; / Though his fair daughter?s self, as I avowed/ As starting, is my object.”Reference: These lines are taken from Robert Browning?s “My Last Duchess”. The main idea is that even though, as I said at the very beginning, my real interest in the marriage is his beautiful daughter (it should be his niece) herself, my claim of the money and property that must come with the bride can?t be refused by your master, the Count, because he is such a rich man. The statement reveals the Duke?s unashamed greediness for wealth. From his word, the reader can easily come to the conclusion that his real purpose of the second marriage is not for love, but for money. The marriage is conditioned by his demand for profit. The sacred marriage between people has been commercialized by him.。

I've got some really really cool news to share with you all. Mrs. Appleton, my favorite teacher ever, told our class about this awesome writing competition happening soon. But get this - it's not just for kids from our school or even our country. Kids from all around the world can enter too! How crazy is that?I was totally mind-blown when Mrs. Appleton told us the details. Apparently, this big company that makes educational games and books for kids is running this contest. And the best part? The winner gets their story published as an actual book that gets sold in stores everywhere! Just imagine seeing your name printed on a real book cover. I would go completely bananas! But that's not even the half of it. The person who wins also gets a giant trophy that's probably taller than my dad. On top of that, they get 1000 cash as the grand prize! With that kind of money, I could buy all the video games, action figures, and candy I could ever want. Maybe I'd even have enough left over to finally get that puppy I've been begging my parents for. Now, Mrs. Appleton said the writing prompt for the competition is to make up a totally original adventure story. It can be about anything our creative minds can dream up - exploring uncharted jungles, going on a magical quest, traveling through time and space. Seriously, the possibilities are endless! She told us to let our imaginations run completely wild. The best stories will have a clear beginning, middle and end with a unique plot and interesting characters. Using descriptive words to paint a vivid picture in the reader's mind is a must. Oh, and don't forget to sprinkle in some conflict and suspense to keep people hooked! Mrs. Appleton gave us all kinds of tips for crafting an amazing tale. But here's the tough part - there's a word limit of exactly 2500 words. Not one word more or less! That's going to be a real challenge, let me tell you. I have a billion crazy ideas swimmingaround in my head, so fitting it all into that limit is going to test my skills for sure.Even though it will be super hard, I'm still totally psych'd to give this a try. Imagine how insanely cool it would be to have my own book on shelves everywhere! Kids all across the globe could read my tale of adventure and thrills. I'd be more famous than Walt Disney or Dr. Seuss! And it's not just the prize that has me fired up. I love creative writing more than just about anything. Using words to paint pictures and tell stories is like magic to me. This contest is the perfect opportunity to take my skills to the next level and really show off what I can do.Mrs. Appleton says the judges will be looking for original ideas, clear storytelling, awesome descriptive language, and an easy to follow plot. She's been helping our class work on all those writing techniques for months now. With her guidance, I'm feeling pretty confident in my abilities.Of course, the competition is going to be crazy fierce since kids from every corner of the planet can enter. I just know there are going to be entries from super talented writers out there. But I can't let that psyche me out! I've got to stay positive andbelieve in myself. I'll be spending every spare minute over the next few weeks dreaming up the most epic adventure this planet has ever seen! Daring heroes, villainous bad guys, monumental challenges andmind-blowing twists await. Just you wait — my story is going to blow everyone's minds!I've already started brainstorming some ideas, but I don't want to give too much away. A brilliant author has to keep some things under wraps to build suspense, after all. But I'll give you a tiny sneak peek - it just might involve explorers stumbling upon a hidden civilization inside the semi-molten core of the Earth itself. With inhabitants that ride robotic lava horses and rebel factions plotting to overthrow the ruler of the underworld kingdom. See, my creativity knows no bounds!Okay, I'd better wrap this up because I have so much crazy awesome writing and plotting to do if I want to win this thing. But let me just say, start making room on your bookshelves right now, because Ray Thurman's tale is coming to shake up the literary world! Who's the greatest adventure storyteller in thewhole universe? This guy, that's who! My book is going to make the Journey to the Center of the Earth look like a walk through the park. I can't wait for you all to be blown away by my masterpiece.Wish me luck, because this kid writer is going for writing competition gold!
T ess of the reasons for the tragedy but also in secular bias and moral hypocrisy of the religious persecution. Tess lives in 19 in the 1980s, according to secular ethics, women lose their virginity is dirty, infidelity, a woman can only lose virginity with this man on the combination. It is exactly such a secular morality that Tess in the Ya - lei been tarnished after the physical and psychological torment, even if progress is well advanced bourgeois ideological education Klein had failed to shake off the secular moral prejudices. Tess in the wedding night expressed their unwed pregnant unfortunate events of the past, but not Klein's sympathy and forgiveness. Visibility secular bias resulted in the love Tess, Tess also deprived of the right to the pursuit of love. Society in general moral values and religion are closely linked. Bourgeois morality to corrupt public morals as her dirty woman, and the infiltration of religious ideology also Tess itself under severe psychological pressure so that the spirit of Tess step by step into the abyss of tragedy. Tess ideologically affected by religious doctrine, the illegitimate child when she died about the time she thinking about the baby have not received baptism, unable to ascend to heaven after death, rushed to the pastor baptized there can be hope was rejected. Moral corruption of the assets can be playing with women, but also all the consequences of all blame women. As Engels said: "Where women are considered serious crimes and to the legal consequences and socialconsequences for all, the men he considered it as a glorious, and at most can only be regarded as morally embrace of a small stain. in bourgeois society, religious reactionary ruling class is only for the anesthesia to cheat and fool the working people the tools, moral and legal only in the maintenance and service sectors of the upper reaches of society.苔丝在小说中露面时,家庭已经到了崩溃的边缘。
Tess of The D'UrbervillesThomas Hardy, the author of Tess of The D'Urbervilles, was one of the excellent novelist of the nineteenth century.Since he was a realistic author,Tess of The D'Urbervilles reflected his real society. This book described a charm of the tragic fate of the poor girl-Tess.She was the eldest daughter of a poor rural working family and looked markedly more mature than she was.Because of the parents' requirement,Tess came to the D'Urbervilles and met Alec Stoke D'Urbervilles. For the beauty of Tess,Alec pretended to help Tess and made her fed chickens in his manor.Three months later,he raped Tess .Tess was hate him and came back home, but she was pregnant and gave birth to a baby ,died for illness unfortunately. After going through a difficult period,Tess decided to start again and made another journey away from home. She came to a milk farm, while met her true love-Angel Clare. He was the son of a clergyman, but he was a freethinker and fallen in love with Tess.Soon, they got married. After wedding, they confessed their pasts to each other, and Tess forgave Angel's for his past indiscretions. But Angel could not put up with Tess for having a child with another man.So Angel abandoned Tess ,went to the Brazil on his own and Tess had to go back home.Because of her father's suddenly death and mother's bad body, the family had no house to live.Tess had no other choice only to a farm to drudge. While unfortunately,Alec appeared again in a minister.Alec entangled Tess constantly and persuaded her to see the reality in her relationship with Angle. For the family exited,Tess had to become Alec's mistress. In the other hand,Angle Clare went through a difficult experience in Brazil and returned from Brazil to look for Tess.Through the psychological struggle,Tess killed Alec and found Angle in the train.During the escaping life with Angle, they had a very happy couple life. But still could not change,Tess was arrested finally and died.Tess could be a happy girl though her family was very poor. But “noble, status, and money” were strongly in her father’s mind, just because of the discovery that a parson said to him. Without their horse’s carrying load, life became rather difficult. Tess blamed herself completely, and she wondered what she could help her parents. Then T ess obeyed her mother’s idea, to work at the D’Urberville’s home. After reading this book,it gives me great impression. There is no doubt that the tragedy of Tess, firstly is the social tragedy. In that age,Tess lived in the bottom of the society. She was very simple and wanted a simple life with her true love, but she had no power to defenseherself. Therefore she lost her purity. In other words,Angle also did a wrong thing and it even more serious than Tess's crime.Tess had owned the traditional virtue and the spirit of selfless dedication. The same, she was the victim of law.But perhaps no love,no hatred,no dignity, death was the best way for Tess to extricate herself.Tess did not make any mistakes, but at last, she born all punishments and sufferings. What we cay is that all the panic of Tess comes from the unfair society. To be honest, this book is really worth reading. It gives me great influence.。

The Only Choice for Tess

Abstract: Tess of the D‟Urbervilles depicts the tragic life of a beautiful, pure country girl named Tess. After watching the film we know that Tess‟s tragedy is inevitable in the corrupt and abnormal society she
lives .But revenge is her only choice .It is the only way for her to put an end to her tragic life and vindicate her purity.
Because of her family‟s poverty, Tess Durberfield is sent by her parents to their suppos ed relative the d ‟Urbervilles where she met Mrs.
d ‟Urbervill
e ‟s son, Alec who seduced her when she works on his mother‟s poultry farm. She leaves Alec unmarried but pregnant. Later she gives birth to a baby, who soon dies o
f illness. Then she finds a job on Talbothays dairy farm, where she meets Angle and fall in love with him. On their weddin
g night, Tess tells her past to An gel, who can‟t accept this fact and leave her. After her father dies, she and her family become homeless . Tess has to go back to Alec for financial aid. Later Angel comes back from Brazil to find her. Tess, wit
h her love for Angel rekindled, kills Alec and escapes with Angel. They spend several pleasant days together before Tess is arrested and executed. Tess, a beautiful pure
girl, is not rewarded with a happy life and marriage for her womanly virtues, but is forced to suffer tremendously and at last dies so tragically. Is Tess‟s revenge worthy?
The answer is …no‟, but it is her only choice.
Alec is a villainous dandy, whose interest in Tess is only her beauty. From his first meet with Tess, he begins to covet her beauty and finally seduces her. His later proposal of marriage to Tess is also out of her beauty. He attempts to legitimize his former relationship with her by proposing marriage, but does not admit his own fault. He attributes his crime as Tess‟s tem ptation instead of his avarice. His real intention is to gain complete control over her and make her the object of his lust. Angel is a bourgeois intellectual with double moral standard, whose love for Tess is based on chastity. I n Tess ‟s eyes, Angel is a man of purity, just as his name “angel”. In Angel‟s eyes, Tess is also“a fresh and virginal daughter of Nature ”. But when Angel learns of Tess‟s past affair with Alec, his perception of Tess completely reverses. Angel deserts Tess and leads her to a tragic end.
From above, we can see that: both Alec and Angel have brought about great sufferings to Tess. One of them deprives of her virginity and the other deserts her. If Alec assaulted Tess physically, Angel violated her spiritually. She was destoryed by the two men. Neither of them deserves the love of Tess.
Then, is there a good way for Tess?
The story takes place in the late 19th century, when the British Empire is on the decline and there is also decay of Victorian values. As sexual inequality still prevails, women are suppressed by the abnormal moral values. Alec and Angel are the incarnation of the evil social forces. Alec, a villainous dandy, violates innocent Tess, but doesn‟t receive punishment, and even becomes clergy to save people from sin; Angel, an intellectual with seemingly emancipated thinking, is still the slave of unjust moral standards. Alec‟s seducing of Tess makes her a maiden no more. She is considered as a sinful person with a lowly status. Because of this unfortunate experience, she is deserted by her husband, and has to be the plaything of Alec‟s. She is tortured exhaustedly and there seems to be no end to her tragedy. With Angel‟s return from abroad, Tess‟s suffering reaches its culmination: to be the paramour of the man whom she hates, or to live with the man who once deserts her? In despair, Tess kills her seducer and runs back to the embrace of her truly lover. It is her willing action to avenge herself and pursue her own love. However, she is inevitably punished by the society. Her revenge is unworthy . But there is no other choice for her. it is the only way to put an end to her tragic life and vindicate her purity.。
