Perhaps some of the job offers they have received are below their skill and experience levels. Is it better to take these offers, or rejectthem and remain unemployed?Recently, David Pedulla, a University of Texas sociologist, conducted a study about how taking a job below your skill level could affect your future employment. In the study, Pedulla developed resumes for imaginary job applicants. The job seekers he created had a few things in common. They had a college degree, worked nearly two years at their first job, and about 4.5 years at their second job. What differed was their third job in the most recent year. They either had a full-time job that matched their skills, a part-time job below their skill levels, or were unemployed. Then Pedulla submitted 2,420 resumes based on his imaginary job seekers, along with cover letters, to online ads for 1,210 real jobs. Each applicant had a real phone number that employers could contact if they were interested in talking with the applicant further. The callback rates varied widely based on how the imaginary job seekers had spent their last year. The applicants who had full-time jobs the previous year were called back 10.4 percent of the time. Those whose most recent year of employment was in a job below their skill levels were only called back about 5 percent. Male applicants unemployed for a year were called back 4.2 percent of the time, while the figure is 7.5 percent for unemployed females. However, Pedulla cautioned that the experiment only measured the initial interest of employers in his fictional job candidates, not whether the employers would hire them or what they would be paid based on their most recent job experiences.28.The purpose of the first paragraph is ________A.to lead in the topicB.to present an argumentC.to shock the readerD.to describe the present situation in job seeking29.Which statement is NOT true about Pedulla’s experiment? ________A.The applicants had some things in common at their first two jobs.B.The applicants’ resumes and phone numbers are created by Pedulla.C.T he applicants’ most recent job experiences affected the callback rates.D.Unemployed female applicants got a higher callback rate than males.30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? ________A.The applicants with a high callback rate would surely be hired.B.The applicants’ most recent job experiences would decide their salaries.C.There are some limits about what lessons can be taken from the study.D.It is better to take a job offer below one’s skill level than to reject it.31.In which section may the text appear in a newspaper? ________A.Career.B.Science.C.Culture.D.EducationDA funny thing happened between China’s first female Nobel Prize winner, Tu Youyou, giving her acceptance speech in Sweden and that speech reaching her home country: Two entirely different versions appeared, and the fake one became a viral hit.Guess which version is genuine? The one that matter-of-factly tells about the discovery of artemisinin(青蒿素), or the one with extreme literary style, complete with her father explaining the origin of her given name and poetic lines such as, “I like tranquility(宁静), tranquil as the leaves of sweet wormwood(蒿草).”Most readers were so touched by the literary version that they were left in tears. However, they just forgot that Tu is not a woman of letters, but one of science. It was totally made up by someone who obviously has great literary talent, but could not fathom the inner life of a scientist.I don’t know who made up the Tu speech, or for what purpose. It does not strike me as funny. Fortunately, no mainstream media seemed to have been fooled. Yet the fake one has probably been shared more than the real one because it played to the Chinese stereotype(固定形式)of what such a speech should be.China’s cyberspace(信息空间)is full of educational and uplifting quotes, and quite a lot of them are made up. There is a joke that says the United States’ spying network col lected and examined all the Internet data in China and found that the Chinese are addicted to such chicken soup, including that from untrustworthy sources. 32.The reason why many readers were moved to tears by the fake speech is that ________A.it was based on Tu’s real lifeB.it was written in literary styleC.the readers had passions for scienceD.the readers knew about the origin of Tu’s given name33.What does the underlined word “letters” mean in the fourth paragraph? ________A.Written messages addressed to a person or organization.B.Characters in an alphabet that represent speech sounds.C.Certificate or license.D.Literary knowledge, ability, or learning34.Why has the fake speech been shared more than the real one? ________A.Because it was the Chinese stereotype.B.Because many mainstream medias were fooled.C.Because it was funny.D.Because the writer understood the inner life of a scientist.35.The purpose of the article is to ________A.prove that Chinese are addicted to fake news.B.prove that Chinese scientists have no literary talent.C.tell us there are a lot of fake news on the Internet.D.find out who made up the fake speech.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项.The rules about how to talk, eat and sit, which are highly limited, are observed in most Western restaurants and homes. 36 Many Westerners have no idea how to act at the Chinese dinner table. Then keep walking until you reach the post office. You can’t miss it.(Text 2)M: How was the job interview? I think you’ll make a good reporter.W: Unfortunately, they were looking for people with plenty of experience.(Text 3)M: I hope the weather is nice this weekend so I can go and play basketball.W: I heard that the weather should be good. It’s not very likely to rain.M: Hopefully, we’ll both have good weekends.(Text 4)W: Can you say something on the matter? After all, you are the only person who knows what really happened. M: That’s quite true. I think I can give something valuable.W: So when did it happen?M: About ten o’clock in the morning.(Text 5)W: Alan, have you got a meeting in Edinburgh?M: Yes, I’m going to see some leaders from headquarters. Why?W: I’m going to visit Glasgow on Wednesday, and it’s quite near Edinburgh.M: Ah … I’m going to drive there tomorrow, so you can go with me.(Text 6)W: Darling, you look so pale.M: I just got some bad news today.W: What happened, Tony?M: Today my boss called me into his office and told me they had to dismiss me. That means I’m out of work now. W: Oh, that’s terrible! You really liked working there!M: Yeah. This is so sudden, and I have so much to do in the company.W: OK, well, the past is the past. Could you please ask them to come as soon as possible? We’d like to leave for the museu m in 20 minutes.(Text 8)W: What is it like living in the campus housing?M: I live in a two-bedroom house in a three-story apartment. It’s not so bad as I thought it would be. The freshmen that live nearby are really noisy, especially on weekends, but th e rent is much cheaper than private housing, so it’s worth it.W: Do you have to pay any fees besides your monthly rent?M: No, everything is included, and students don’t have to pay state tax, so we’re saving quite a bit of money living here. Oh, just one thing — we have to pay a little extra money for water.W: How long are you going to stay there, do you think?M: That’s the bad thing —the rent ends in June, so we’ll have to find a new apartment soon.W: Have you started looking yet?M: Not yet. I’m hoping we’ll be able to find something cheap once all the students leave the city in the summer. (Text 9)M: Hi, Anna! It’s been such a long time since the last time we met. Have you thought of moving at all?W: We’ve thought about it, but my husband and I can’t afford it right now.M: Buying a house can be expensive, but there are ways to find cheaper houses.W: Like what?M: Well, you can definitely save money if you buy a house far from the city center.W: That’s a good idea.M: Yeah. My sister-in-law and her husband just bought a house like that.W: Is the house in bad shape?M: Not at all. The woman who owned it took really good care of it, but when she died, she had no family left, so the government sold it for her.W: Was it a very old house?M: It was about 75 years old. It needed a few repairs, but it didn’t take a lot of money or time.W: Is it in a good location?M: The area can be a bit rough in the evening, but the neighbors watch out for each other, so it’s OK.(Text 10)(W)Nowadays there are so many animals out there making people’s lives happier. Dogs are the best examples. As the saying goes, “a dog is a man’s best friend” — and many people have found this to be very true. Many dogs will do anything their owners ask them to do. Dogs not only entertain people, but sometimes can actually help to do some work. However, our dog, Rex, is another story. Every time he wanted to come into the garden he would bark until someone opened the gate. After the neighbors complained about the noise, my husband spent several weeks training Rex to use his paw to press the gate handle and let himself in. Rex soon became an expert at opening the gate. However, when I was going out shopping last week, I noticed him in the garden near the gate, barking so that someone would let him out! We soon found that he had developed another bad habit. After he opened the gate from the outside, he would come into the garden and wait until the gate shut. Then he would sit and bark until someone let him out. Yesterday my husband removed the gate, and Rex got so annoyed that we have not seen him since. 21.D判断推理题。

Californians are feeling the heat after Governor Jerry Brown announced an order that puts mandatory(强制的) statewide water cutbacks into effect.California has faced water-use cutbacks in the past. In January 2014, Governor Brown called for residents to curb their water use by 20 percent, but many places around the state failed to meet that goal. This most recent announcement, however, marks the first time in the state’s history that mandatory restrictions have been ordered. Most of California’s water supply comes from the Sierra Nevada mountain range snowpack. Normally, during the spring and summer, this snow melts and puts new supplies into groundwater. but this past winter, the snowpack reached its lowest point since 1950. “today we are standing on dry grass where there should be feetof snow” announced Governor Brown. As part of his order, Governor Brown called upon the state Water Resource Control Board to draft emergency rules for water use in the coming month. Cities and towns across the state must cut water usage by 25 percent. If city water agencies failto meet these targets for water conservation, they could be fined $10,000 a day.The state will also support local governments in replacing 50 million square feet of lawns with drought-tolerant plants that use less water. Outdoor lawn watering will be limited to two days per week, and residents will not be permitted to water their lawns during rainstorms and for two days afterwards. The order also asks local water agencies to raise the price of water to discourage excessive water use.Governor Brown said change may not be easy, but it’s necessary to ensure that residents can fill their water glasses into the future. “it is a wake-up call,” he said. “it’s requiring action and changes in behavior.”24. What does the underlined word “curb” in the second paragraph mean?A. reduceB. increaseC. measureD. schedule25. This year’s drought in California is mainly caused by .A. The lack of rainfall last winter.B. Its residents’ excessive water use.C. The historically low temperature last winter.D. The reduction of snowpack on the Sierra Nevada26. Why will local government remove the 50 million square feet of lawns?A. To get rid of dry grassB. To decrease the use of waterC. To develop the land for water storageD. To grow plants that can block rainstorms27. According to the new order, Californians should .A. Water their lawns every three or four days.B. Avoid watering their lawns before rainstorms.C. Take mandatory lessons on water conservation.D. Keep the emergency rules for water use in mindCThe next time you eat a piece of chocolate, be sure to enjoy it, because according to two of the world’s largest chocolate makers—Mars Inc and Barry Callebaut, the treat may soon be in short supply. The problem? We are consuming the candy at a faster pace than farmers can grow cocoa. The manufacturers say that in 2013, people consumed 70,000 tons more cocoa than was produced. Experts say that this is the worst supply-demand imbalance they have experienced in more than 50 years.Parts of the reason for the condition is the large reduction in supply, caused by a continuous drought in the west African countries of Ivory Coast and Ghana, where more than 70 percent of the world’s cocoa is produced. Additionally, a certaindisease known as frosty pod has destroyed 30 to 40 percent of global cocoa production. As a result, many farmers have turned to more profitable and easier grown crops like corn. This means that even if conditions improve, cocoa production may never get back to normal.Meanwhile, the world is only getting hungrier for chocolate. The biggest increase in demand is from the residents of emerging market countries like India. Though their consumption is nowhere close to the amount European devour, their newly acquired amount for the treat , is making a huge dent(凹痕) in an already tight market. There is also the growing desire for dark chocolate, which contains more than 70 percent cocoa compared to normal chocolates. Experts believe that if consumption continue at this pace, cocoa deficits (差额) could swell to one million tons by 2020 and to an even more worrisome, two million tons, by 2030.Not surprisingly, cocoa prices have risen by 60% since 2012, a cost that manufacturers have offset by raising the prices of everyone’s fa vorite candy. As the situation worsens, the price of chocolate can only rise—so be sure to enjoy piece of the sweet treat, like it is your last!28. The underlined phrase “supply—demand imbalance” probably means .A. People consume more chocolate than productionB. Farmers grow more cocoa than people’s demandC. More and more people like eating chocolates nowD. Chocolates are becoming more and more expensive29. It is hard to raise cocoa production probably because .A. The weather is changeable in the west AfricaB. A certain disease spread around the worldC. Many farmers don’t grow any longerD. It is impossible for conditions to be improved30. Where has the demand of chocolate been increasing greatly according to the passage?A. In AsiaB. In AfricaC. In EuropeD. In America31. According to the author’s prediction, we can know that .A. Chocolate will become cheap sooner or laterB. The farmers will produce more cocoa in 2030C. The price of chocolate will be going up all the wayD. Dark chocolate will be more popular than common oneDA Chinese actor’s divorce from his wife, over her alleged extramarital affair, has social media buzzing, with posts about the subject gaining over five billion views.Wang Baoqiang announced online on Sunday that he was divorcing his wife, Ma Rong, and sacking his agent, Song Zhe. Wang and Ma’s split has many people wondering if uneven matches are unlikely to succeed.A lot of social media discussion has also centred around divorce, and inparticular how people can protect themselves. Wang has alleged that his wife transferred and hid some of the couple’s assets. They’re a wealthy couple - their assets, according to Chinese media, include nine flats, a BMW car and various luxury goods.
