Analysis of The Cask of Amontillado英语1202 余路遥2120122780 After reading the story The Cask of Amontillado, I was deeply attracted by the fascinating plot, the conflicting two characters and the skillful writing approach the author used.At the beginning of novel, Montresor makes up his mind to take revenge on Fortunato because of thousand injuries and insults from Fortunato. One evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, Montresor encounters drunken Fortunato and cloaks asking him for help in remarking on a pipe of “what passes for Amontillado” in order to lure Fortunato into the deepest corner of his vault and finally kills him. This is a story of revenge, the author touches mine to the inner world of people, looking for a "reasonable source" of terrorists -- the heart. He reveals to us that: "people are makers of terror", the source of the terror is in the mind. On one hand, Fortunato is arrogant and conceited, he "boasts that he is a wine expert" and empties Montresor. He suddenly wakes up and knows his stupid until death , but at that time, he can only wait for death in despair and agony. Fortunato’s defective personality is obvious. On the other hand, Montresor clearly knows all about to happen, and believes "revenge is not letting theperson know who hurts him", which means he can be at large after the murder, his cunning reflects deeper flaws in personality. He is more terrible because that he takes the murder as a plan and that his soul is completely destroyed by inordinate desire of revenge.Next, I want to talk something about the skillful writing techniques. Firstly, the perspective of writing is attractive. Selecting the first person as the narrator----the master ' I ', can establish personal relationships with the reader. The novel is also written in the first person: "My" revenge idea is firm, and "you" are also "well acquainted with my natural temper" and know "I" will "do with no trouble left", The monologue type of description can shorten the reader's psychological distance, let readers have a better understanding of the murder's psychology and grasp every detail of the crime to follow the narrator "I" into the murder scene, and to experience the terror. The first person narrative enables readers to be personally on the scene and makes their hearts firmly attracted by the narrator and every word he says.Secondly, the adjectives are charming. The author uses a series of adjectives to describe characters’ psychological activity. When they walk step by step to the deep into the vault, Montresor says:“...your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was”, superficially, these are all compliments for Fortunato, however, Montresor’s aim is to decrease drunken Fortunato’s awareness of the potential danger. There is an obvious contrast here, the more fair-sounding the prize is, the deeper the hatred is. The adjectives again highlight the conflict between the two characters and the defeat in Montresor’s personality.Thirdly, the symbolism used in this essay is ingenious. For example, there is no description about the two characters’ background, but through the Italian word “palazzo”, we can know not only the story happens in Italy, but also the characters are rich people. What’s more, the Latin words escaping Montresor’s lips also imply that his educational level is not low. The motto of the Montresors family---“Nemo me impune lacessit”, which hints Montresor’s determination of revenge also indicates Fortunato’s dea th. Furthermore, when the two characters walk step by step into the deep of vault, the torch flame becomes gradually smaller due to the lack of oxygen and the barrel around the skull appears to be more and more, these changes all portend that the chance of Fortunato beingalive is smaller and smaller. The author brings us readers crafty symbolisms.Edger Allan Poe advocated art for art's sake, tried to make the novel to the art of language and created a sort of "expected atmosphere", so as to achieve the”desired effects”. He brought readers so much uncontemplated surprises in his works. Through deeper analysis, I think we can learn much more of this work----The Cask of Amontillado.。
