作为海洋系统的重要组成部分,深海包含了平原、海山、海沟、深渊、热液和冷泉等多种复杂环境,进而孕育了独特的生态系统和生命过程,成为地球科学和生命科学的研究热点。
19世纪中叶之前,人们认为500 m 水深以下是没有生命的。
The Importance Ecosystems in the Ocean The ocean is a vast and diverse ecosystem, covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. It is home to a wide range of organisms and plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of life on our planet. This process helps to mitigate the effects of climate change, as excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributes to global warming.Additionally, ocean currents play a significant role in transporting heat around the planet. The Gulf Stream, for example, carries warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, warming the climate in Europe. Without these ocean currents, many regions would experience dramatic changes in climate patterns, with severe consequences for ecosystems and human populations.Protection against Natural DisastersHealthy ocean ecosystems provide essential protection against natural disasters, especially along coastal areas. Coral reefs, for example, act as natural breakwaters, reducing the impact of waves and storms on coastlines. They help to prevent erosion and maintain the stability of coastal ecosystems and human settlements.Mangrove forests are another example of ocean ecosystems that provide protection. These dense forests act as natural barriers against storms and tsunamis, absorbing the energy of waves and reducing their impact on coastal communities.Economic ImportanceOcean ecosystems are not only vital for the environment but also for our economy. Marine resources, such as fish, shellfish, and algae, are important sources of food and livelihood for many communities around the world. The fishing industry, in particular, provides employment and sustenance for millions of people globally.Furthermore, recreational activities like boating, diving, and beach tourism contribute significantly to local economies. Pristine marine environments, such as coral reefs and underwater reserves, attract tourists from all over the world, providing income to coastal communities.The Threat of Human ActivitiesDespite their importance, ocean ecosystems are under threat from various human activities.
