My older cousin Dandan just took the big English exam for 9th graders called the "Mock Exam" and she told me all about the writing part. It was really hard but also fascinating! Let me share what she said.The first writing task was something called "Situational Writing." Dandan explained that this means they gave her a scenario and she had to write a letter, email, advertisement or other text based on that situation. The example she described was having to write a letter to the school newspaper editor about hosting an Earth Day event at their school. She had to include specific details like the event date, activities planned, why it's important, and a call for volunteers. It sounded very practical!Dandan said the keys were using correct letter formatting, having a clear purpose statement, organizing the body into paragraphs, and ending with a resolute conclusion. She also had to use formal language appropriate for writing to an editor. Having good examples to back up her points was important too. It made me realize how useful writing skills are for real life!The second task was called "Narrative Writing" which is basically telling a story! Dandan's prompt asked her to write about a memorable experience that taught her an important lesson. She chose to narrate a time when she accidentally broke her mom's favorite vase as a young kid. Through that story, she learned about responsibility, admitting mistakes, and making amends. Cool right?For narrative writing, Dandan focused on setting up the situation and characters first. Then she described the key events in detail, using descriptive language to make the scenes come alive. She included vivid dialogues and tried to build excitement through the rising action. Finally, she reflected on the lesson learned in the conclusion. Having a clear message was crucial. Dandan said storytelling is both an art and a skill!Last but not least was the "Expository Writing" assignment. This one required more analysis and explanation. The prompt asked Dandan to discuss the importance of teamwork and cooperation in achieving goals. She had to state her thesis, provide convincing examples from different angles, address counter-arguments, and reinforce her position. Very challenging stuff for a 9th grader!The biggest focus for expository writing was developing a clear essay structure - introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Within the body, each paragraph needed a topic sentence, evidence from real life or research, explanations connecting the evidence back to the main idea, and proper transitions between paragraphs. Dandan emphasized using formal, academic language and maintaining an objective tone throughout. No simple task!Dandan spent a lot of time preparing outlines and doing research for the expository essay. She felt it was the hardest part but also the most rewarding because it pushed her analytical thinking abilities. After describing all three writing tasks to me, she stressed how important it is to just keep practicing writing using proper techniques.Even though I'm just a kid, listening to Dandan's experiences made me super excited about taking on those kinds of challenging writing assignments when I'm older. Crafting quality letters, stories and essays seem like such useful life skills. For now though, I'm gonna keep working on my spelling, grammar and hand muscle strength. One step at a time!
