Ancient Chinese Literature

Chinese literature is one of the world's oldest and

richest literary traditions. It has a history that spans

thousands of years and encompasses countless works of poetry,

prose, and drama. Ancient Chinese literature is characterized

by its complexity, depth, and subtlety, and reflects the

social and cultural values of the time periods in which it

was written.

Poetry

Chinese poetry is perhaps the most well-known and highly

regarded form of ancient Chinese literature. It is

characterized by its use of meter, rhyme, and tonal patterns,

and its emphasis on the beauty of language and the natural

world. Some of the most famous poets from ancient China

include Li Bai, Du Fu, and Wang Wei.

Prose

Ancient Chinese prose is known for its ornate style and

intricate description of everyday life. It includes a wide

range of works such as historical records, philosophical

treatises, and novels. Some of the most famous works of

ancient Chinese prose include The Analects of Confucius, The

Art of War by Sun Tzu, and Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en.

Drama

Chinese drama dates back to the Tang dynasty and

includes a variety of forms such as opera, shadow puppetry,

and acrobatic plays. These dramas were often highly stylized

and featured colorful costumes and elaborate sets. Some of the most famous Chinese dramas include The Peony Pavilion by

Tang Xianzu and The Monkey King by Guan Hanqing.

The richness and diversity of ancient Chinese literature

continue to inspire and captivate readers and scholars around

the world.

Course Introduction:

Ancient Chinese literature was booming during Wei and Jin dynasties until Tang dynasty.

Based on the Han poems, poetry got a great progress during the Period of Wei jin liu chao

dynasties, and the climax of ancient Chinese literature showed up in Tang dynasty. Poetry in Wei

and Jin dynasties until Tang dynasty is featured to be beautiful, until the ancient prose movement

Fu and His Works

In the vast expanse of Chinese literature, few figures

stand as tall as Du Fu, a poet whose works have transcended

the ages, becoming a timeless testament to the beauty

later generations, Du Fu's life and works offer a profound

Born in 712 AD in the Tang Dynasty, Du Fu spent his
