B Scientists have been trying to make soft and friendly robots, like Disney’s Baymax, for years. And they have finally done it. The “octobot” is the world’s first soft robot. It is not like the scary, metal robots in movies like Star Wars or
The Terminator(《终结者》). Instead, it is made of soft material, and looks just like an octopus(章鱼). Octobot is also the first soft robot that controls itself without batteries or wires, according to its researchers at Harvard University in the US. The hope is that one day, soft robots like this will help humans do difficult medical
surgery(外科手术) and save lives in emergencies like earthquakes and storms. Scientists have been trying for years to make soft robots that are safe around humans, but this is the first time it has happened. It means that humans won’t be in danger of being hurt if the robot accidentally touches you too hard.
The octobot gets power from a chemical reaction(化学反应). It pushes gas through the robot’s body and makes its legs dance. They used a 3-D printer to create its body. “Humans ourselves, we’ve very soft and soft robots are made of materials that are safe for us to interact(互动) with,” PhD students student Pyan Truby, one of the octobot researchers, told BBC. Barry Trimmer, the editor-in-chief of Soft Robotics, told NPR that,” Soft robots and soft material technologies are definitely needed if we expect them to help us in the home or in natural environments.” They may not all look like an octopus in the future, though.
Scientists have studied jellyfish(水母) and even cockroaches(蟑螂) in their research so far. 19.What is the difference between the “octobot” and other robots? A. It looks like Disney’s Baymax. B. It’s a soft and friendly robot. 浙江省杭州市滨江区2017届九年级上学期期末考试英语试题(含解析) 3 / 13 C. It’s a robot like in Star Wars. D. It looks like an animal. 【答案】B
【考点】细节推断题 【解析】由第二段第二行 “Instead, it is made of soft material and looks just like an octopus” 可知octobot与其他机器人的区别之一是soft; 由第三段最后一句 “It means that humans won’t be in danger of being hurt if the robot accidently touches you too hard” 可知octobot不会像其他硬质的机器人那样偶尔会伤害到人类,所以它与其他机器人的区别之二是 “friendly” , 故此B正确。D选项符合对octobot的描述,但不是octobot区别于其他机器人的特性; A&B选项文章第二段第二句已经给予了否定,是错误选项。 20. According to the story, the octobot ____. A. uses batteries and wires. B. helps in difficult medical surgery C. saves lives in earthquakes or storms D. works through chemical reaction 【答案】D
【考点】细节推断题 【解析】由第二段第四行 “Octobot is also the first soft robot that controls itself without batteries and wires” 可知A选项意思与其相反,错误; 由第二段最后一句 “soft robots like this will help…”可知,BC选项所描述的事情仅仅是可能会发生(原文中 “will” 是关键词), 并不是octobot已经具备的能力, 故BC错误; 由第四段第一句 “The octobot gets power from a chemical reaction.” 可知, D选项符合描述,正确。 21. What do those researchers think of the octobot? A. It costs less money to make it. B. Its materials are safe for humans. C. It helps people in every field D. Its technologies are more advanced. 【答案】B
【考点】细节推断题 【解析】由原文倒数第二段第一句 “soft robots are made of materials that are safe for us.”
C When I was 14, I left school. I was on the way to California to follow my dream.
When I reached downtown El Paso, I met a bum(无业游民) on the street corner. He stopped me and asked me if I was running away from home. I told him “Not exactly, sir,” because my father had given me a ride to the train station and said, “ it is important to follow your dream, son.” After talking for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He took me to a public library. The bum first took me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment. A few moments later, he returned with some old books and sat beside me. Then he said, “there are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these. Number one is never to judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.” He continued, “You
