光绪十五年出生。
小时候家里人叫她"小三少爷",调皮贪玩,她说自己天不怕地不怕就只怕鬼,和家里长辈,私塾老师斗智斗勇,拔马尾巴的毛,还打过黎元洪的屁股,十几岁才换了女装。
后和赵元任结婚,育有一女。
杨步伟当过女校校长,后来赴日学医,加入过同盟会,又创建医院,开过饭馆,又办清华进城的公交车,又做过手提包卖,后来相夫教子之余写了很多书,其中还有一本风靡欧美几十年的中国菜谱。
这本菜谱是在康奈尔的图书馆偶然被发现的。
1945年出版时就是英文版,杨步伟说自己英文一般,这本书是自己写中文版,女儿帮忙翻译,丈夫修改而来的。
她在前言介绍说自己也是伴着"优雅的女人不进厨房的观念"长大的,出国前甚至没有打过一颗蛋,但因为留学期间不喜欢日本菜才学了做菜。

所以中华饮食在推广中国传统 文化中扮演着越来越重要的角色。
要使中国传统美食在国际 上大放异彩,菜名的翻译就显得极其重要。
不恰当的菜名翻 译不仅会贻笑大方,还会造成很严重的误会。
二、中国菜名的翻译方法罗马帝国时期的著名政治家西塞罗将翻译分为直译和 意译,这两种翻译方法是很常见的翻译方法,在翻译过程中 应用广泛。
直译是字面翻译,既保持原文内容、又保持原 文形式的翻译方法。
意译,也称为自由翻译,它只保持原 文内容,不保持原文形式的翻译方法(Jeremy Munday, 2010, 36)。
本文整理分析了一些了中国菜名的翻译,并将它们按不同的翻译方法进行分类。
(一) 直译自从我国改革开放以来,越来越多的外国游客走入中国 餐馆,但当他们翻开菜单,很多时候会觉得一头雾水,因为很多菜名是直译而来,他们根本理解不了这些菜到底是 什么。

然而,源于语言、文化背景等方面的差异,限制了外国人对中国菜等饮食文化的了解与接受,如何恰当精确地翻译中国菜名,已成为发扬中华美食的一个极为重要的问题。
本文就中国菜名的英译从翻译的音义、曲直、虚实和一些具体的译法等方面作了探讨。
一、中国菜名英译的原则(一)对极具中国民族传统特色的菜,采用音译原则音译就是将某种语言的词用另外一种语言与其发音相近似的词表达,我国在翻译外国菜的过程当中,经常采用音译的方式。
比如,hamburger 不译成“牛肉饼”而音译成“汉堡包”,sandwich 不译成“夹肉馒头”而音译成“三明治”,salad 不译成“蔬菜水果什锦”而音译成“沙拉”。
这些音译的菜名保持了外国的饮食文化,有助于国人对外国的了解。
一开始国人可能无法理解这些新名词的含义,但随着时间的推移,也就理解了。
同样,对中国菜名音译,一开始的时候外国客人或许无法理解,但是只要我们采用一定的手段加以宣传,加以解释,他们最终也会了解的,而且音译更能让他们了解中国菜的文化内涵,这对于加强中外文化交流,将汉语发扬光大是有利的。
