Association, Communication, and Cognition in English
Association refers to the mental connection or linkage that occurs when one
idea, concept, or experience reminds or invokes another. In English, association
can be seen in various aspects of language use, such as metaphor, simile, metonymy,
and allusion. These rhetorical devices rely on associations between different
concepts or domains to convey meaning and evoke emotions or imagery in the reader
or listener's mind.
For example, the metaphor "time is money" creates an association between the
concept of time and the concept of money, suggesting that they are comparable and
valuable resources. Similarly, the simile "her eyes were like stars" creates an
association between the person's eyes and stars, suggesting their beauty and
luminosity.
