科技研究的四象限分类：钱学森象限有一种科研，叫“钱学森象限”：国家战略目标导向下的技术开发。

虽然R&D和基础研究有国际标准定义，但是在实践中，科学界关于研究（与发展）的说法，众说纷纭。

有人统计，1972年关于研究（与发展）的说法，计有45种之多。

其中关于基础研究有5种变形的说法，如纯研究（pure）、基础科学（basic）、基本研究（fundamental）、纯粹基础研究（pure basic）、绝对纯粹研究（absolutely pure）。

关于应用研究有32种变形的说法。

[1]以研究目的或意图来划分基础研究、应用研究的做法，很早就遭到了一些学者的批评。

1951年，美国NSF的董事会主席康南特（James B Conant）提出，基础研究和应用研究之间没有明确的界限。

他认为求知的目标与应用的目标之间存在着交叉。

[2]在科技统计中，一些组织和国家建立了自己的分类体系。

英国对研究与发展采取四分类法，即：基础研究、战略性应用研究（strategic applied research）、特定应用研究（specific applied research）和试验开发。

John Irvine和Ben Martin提出，基础研究可以划分为好奇心驱使的研究和战略研究（Strategic research）。
