The 45-year-old man wasa beloved community figure. But with a public-facing job and a spot on his lung, he was considered a possible COVID-19 carrier. A doctor ordered his family to bury him quickly, against Philippine tradition, and all eight people who lived with him were kept in quarantine(隔离) for 14 days in their crowded home.Yet when Anthony Cortez, the doctor who had ordered the rushed burial and quarantine, arrived to check on the Fernandez family, none of them expressed anger. Instead, faces lit up and the kids waved eagerly.Cortez, the only community doctor in Bambang, has overseen their medical care for years. They trust him, and he makes them laugh. The family gathered outside to have their temperatures taken by the doctor. When the kids tried to give Cortez high fives for not having a fever, the 56-year-old, in a surgical mask, a face shield, and rubber gloves, showed “air fives” instead. For the 56,000 people living in Bambang, Cortez is their primary caregiver and the first responder. When the first coronavirus(冠状病毒)case in the Philippines was confirmed on January 30, the town's response fell to Cortez. He and Mayor Pepito Balgos decided to take action based on science that, if necessary, would go beyond national restrictions. Cortez and Balgos are sharply aware of the threat the virus poses to Bambang, which sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. Anyone going south to Manila or north toward the rest of the country ends up passing through Bambang.Cortez quickly set up a system of contact tracing. Using information from the town's 25 villages, he made a list of all the people who had traveled to other countries, and placed them under strict home quarantine. Anyone with infectious disease symptoms would be moved to a center set up in the mountains. So far that center has remained empty.“It is safer to assume that everybody is positive,” he explained.1.What is Cortez's reaction to the death of Francisco Fernandez?A.Expressing his sympathy.B.Drowning himself into grief.C.Showing professional sensitivity.D.Following the tradition.2.On what basis does Cortez take strict measures to protect Bambang?A.Its geographic character.B.Its lack of medical staff.C.Its large population.D.The demand of the nation.3.What can be inferred about the contact tracing system set up by Cortez?A.It is totally a waste of effort.B.It is complained about by local people.C.It is praised by higher authorities.D.It is effective as a protective means.4.Where is this text most likely from?A.A diary.B.A novel.C.A magazine.D.A biography.BAll day long, at an MSF distribution center, humanitarian(人道主义的)supplies make their way to some of the most dangerous spots on the planet. We meet in Paris at MSF headquarters. Dedieu has just returned from Liberia, where MSF is working to help reopen the hospitals. Her job is to make sure that clean parts of the hospitals are kept separate from areas that are polluted. She says the situation there is a complete disaster. “Even during the war, I haven't seen a health system close so fast. The hospitals are empty because the health staff just aren't there,” she says. Dedieu was in Liberia during that country's civil war in 2003.MSF was founded in 1971 by a group of doctors and journalists. “I remember being criticized in the 1980s as a ‘medical cowboy’,” says Rony Brauman, who headed MSF from 1982 to 1994. “We were blamed for riding in, distributing our pills and creating unreasonable expectations.” But Brauman says that's the nature of health care. “We raise expectations;we create new diseases by treating old diseases,” he says. “That's how it works in general. It was a kind of fight. MSF won that fight,” says Brauman.MSF doctor Cameron Bopp says he's worked with other humanitarian organizations but always missed the level of devotion and motivation he's found at MSF. “The main thing that's different about MSF from the point of view of someone like me who goes out and works in the field is that when there's an emergency, otherorganizations say, ‘Whoa, this is an emergency. We're gonna be there as soon as we get funding.’ And MSF has the funding,” he says. “We start right away.”Ninety percent of MSF's funding comes from a devoted base of five million donors. That gives it the independence to speak out and do what's really needed.5.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To introduce a function of MSF.B.To show the seriousness of Ebola.C.To explore a distribution center of MSF.D.To encourage donations to Ebola-affected countries.6.What can be learned about Kathy Dedieu?A.She is working in Liberia.B.She founded MSF with many other doctors.C.She was once a soldier in the civil war in 2003.D.She helps with pollution prevention in hospitals.7.What was people's attitude to MSF in the early years?A.Hopeful.B.Curious.C.Uncaring.D.Disapproving.8.How is MSF different from other humanitarian organizations according to Cameron Bopp?A.It involves many journalists.B.It has a lot of reliable donors.C.It is operated by doctors themselves.D.It obtains funding from the government.Ⅱ.七选五Ageing can be a difficult time for many people:They may feel lonely, and have financial stress or medical issues. 1.
