If not, it’s time to look the word up in a dictionary. As time allows, go back and read a third time. Do you understand the main idea of each paragraph? Start to note details as well. At the end, try to summarize what you read. This can be done in your head, but you’ll gain more if you try writing the summary on paper.• Without pressure. Don’t stress yourself by thinking every word must be understood. Sometimes you can get the information you need without using a dictionary as you read each sentence. This is especially true when you're reading for fun. Find an author you like. Read to understand the story, and don’t worry about understanding all the vocabulary and grammar structures. If you like the book, you’ll get through it rather quickly, and it will be interesting enough to read a second time. At that point, you can look up new words or ask someone about an unfamiliar grammatical structure.• With a partner or group. Join a book club here in EC or find someone with similar interests. You can both read the same novel, poem, or article and then discuss it. This will help you understand the text more, and you’ll have the chance to practice using new words and expressions you learned while reading.• Aloud. Reading aloud is good pronunciation practice. There are sites that offer both a written text and an audio or video clip. Listen first. Then read the text silently for better understanding. Finally, try reading aloud. Listen to a sentence, and repeat it. Later, if you can, try to read along with the speaker at the same pace. If you have a recording option, record your reading and play it back. No one likes to feel limited in self-expression because we all want to be understood and appreciated. Both in our native language and any foreign language we study, we should make it our goal to acquire enough vocabulary so we can make accurate word choices. For example, you may find it easier to say an actor is good, but perhaps the word you are really searching for is talented. Likewise, you can tell your dinner hosts that dessert is good, but delicious would be more accurate. And at work, I’m sure it would make you happy to hear your boss compliment your very good work, but wo uldn’t it be even more of a thrill to hear about your exceptional performance?Do you see my point? Basic vocabulary makes communication possible, but without more advanced words and expressions our communication can lack accuracy, variety, and depth. Vocabulary both facilitates and “colors” our speech. Vocabulary is a tool to communicate our ideas, and our word choice is a reflection of who we are.How can you improve your vocabulary?1. Read.Reading is one of the best ways to improve your vocabulary. When you read, you can see a new word in context, that is, as part of a whole sentence. The context helps you understand the meaning of the new word.If you’re still not certain, you can easily p ause and look up the word in a dictionary to confirm the definition. Also, when you read, you cannote the spelling of a new word because you see its written form. Try reading articles, novels, and other kinds of texts on a regular basis. (See Study Tip 3).2. Listen to others. You can also expose yourself to new vocabulary by listening to others’ speech. You might hear a new word in a song or as part of a news report. You can learn a new word from a study partner or a salesperson at store. Try to understand a new word in the context it appears, and when you get the chance later, look it up in a dictionary to confirm its definition and review its pronunciation.3. Make use of online dictionaries. Dictionaries are free and easy to use. This helps you learn how to correctly pronounce new vocabulary. Also, some dictionaries note common phrases that the vocabulary appears in. These common phrases are called collocations, and they show frequent, natural groupings of words. For example, we say take a nap, take a test, and take a break. It would be uncommon and unnatural to say do a test or make a break. When you learn a new word, note the phrase it appears in. If you learn common phrases with the new word, it will make it easier for you to use the word correctly and naturally in your own speech.4. Use online ESL/ EFL resources. There are many English teachers who try to help learners by offering free vocabulary practice. Search for material that doesn’t simply teach words and their definitions, but alsoputs the words in a meaningful and memorable context. If attention is given to pronunciation and appropriacy (when and when not to use the vocabulary), that’s even better. Put it all into use.It’s not enough to study vocabulary. You must use it to really learn it. Making mistakes is part of learning, so don’t be afraid to try out a new word. One safe place for this kind of practice is your blog on EnglishCafe. Try including new words in your next blog posting. (Remember the collocations you’ve learned.) Other members are here to support you by offering suggestions and comments.6. Consider studying word parts and word families. For more advanced vocabulary study, consider learning how words are formed. This means learning about roots, prefixes, and suffixes. For example, we can take the word use and add the prefix mis- and get misuse. Then by adding the suffix -age we get misusage. By knowing prefixes and suffixes, you can more easily understand new words when you first encounter them. Also, by knowing word families, you can increase the accuracy of your sentence structure. For instance, pronunciation and pronounce belong to the same word family. To build a sentence correctly, you need to know that pronunciation is the noun and pronounce is the verb.Study Tip 5: Be an active listener.Listening is a skill in itself, but it’s also a way to improve other skills.• If you choose good models, you can learn useful words and expressions.• If you choose good models, you can increase your understanding of pronunciation patterns.• If you chose good models, you can hear correct grammar in use.What do I mean by good models? Well, I don’t mean that you should only listen to formal English used in lectures and TV documentaries. I also don’t mean that you s hould only hold conversations with highly educated speakers or speakers of one particular dialect as opposed to another. What I mean is that you will gain by listening to people whose proficiency in English is as strong as or higher than yours and by listening to speech that is clear and accurate. My advice is to communicate with as many people as you can in English, regardless of their language level, but when you are in the company of people with strong knowledge of English, pay attention and learn from them.Another point I wish to make concerns the dangers of listening to what is known as “street talk”. That’s the language which uses a lot of slang –vocabulary that’s not understood by all social groups and generations. It’s also the language which doesn’t always follow standard grammar and may include some offensive words. It certainly helps to understand such speech when you hear it, but imitating more standard speech has more potential for successful communication than imitating non-standard speech.More tips on being an active listener:1. Seek opportunities to hear different accents. For example, on EnglishCafe you can listen to teachers from different countries. Look for blog entries or lessons that include audio clips. You can also search online and find news podcasts, films, and audio books that feature a range of accents. The site offers recorded conversations among native and non-native speakers. Each of those conversations presents a learning opportunity. The goal is to increase your ability to understand variations in pronunciation and expose yourself to good use of vocabulary and grammar.2. Imitate good models.Discreetly (meaning quietly and without calling attention to yourself), you can play a private game. Listen to the talk around you and try repeating whole lines of speech exactly as you heard them. This can be done at the bus stop, the grocery store, or school cafeteria. The game of imitation is much like taking on a dramatic role. Pretend you are the person you just heard and repeat his or her words exactly as you heard them. By paying close attention to other people’s speech patterns, you’ll become more aware of yours. If you aren’t in an English-speaking country, you can repeat after speakers on TV or in films.3. Focus on the context in order to learn new vocabulary and understand the grammar. If you hear a new word or expression, think about what the person is talking about. Can you guess from the other words what the speaker means? Getting the basic meaning is sometimes enough, at least until you get the chance to look up the new word in the dictionary or ask someone who can explain the word to you. Similarly, think not just about what someone said but how the person said it. This is a good way to remember correct use of a verb tense, an article, or other grammar.。
