Duringthe twentieth century there has been a remarkable shortening of the time of awoman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of thenineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and wouldbe likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived tillthey were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the motherwould have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twentyyears, during which health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Todaywomen marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman‘s youngest childwill be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live anotherthirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement(退休) atsixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened bymodern living conditions. This important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun tohave its full e ffect on women‘s economic position. Even a few years ago mostgirls left schools at the first chance, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returnedto it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at schoolafter that age, and though women usually marry younger, more married womenstay at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many moreafterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a newrelationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, and with the both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.3.According to the passage, around the year 1900 most women married________. A. at about twenty-five B. in their early fifties C as soon as possible after they were fifteen D. at any age from fifteen to forty-five4. We are told that in a common family about 1900 _________.A.many children died before they were fiveB.seven or eight children lived to be more than five C.the youngestchild would be fifteenD.four or five children died when they were five5.When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth-century mother _________. A.would be healthy enough to take up paid jobs B.was usually expected to die fairly soon C.would expect to work until she diedD.was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted one6.According to the passage, the women of today usually _________. A.marry instead of getting paid work C.have more children under fifteen 【答案】 3.A 4.A 5.D 6.B 【解析】略Advice to English learnersLearners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their ability.First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one.Secondly, stick to one course of study. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more “ fashionable”(时髦).Thirdly, listen to the English news programme over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio.Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in“special English” from the VOA or other listening materials of the samelevel as that of your textbook. 7.This is a piece of advice to learners of English in how to_____. And, on the basis of a bit of email correspondence and seeing a photo of the sofa belonging to 'A. N. Unknown', would you travel halfway across the world to do the same? It might sound crazy, but this is exactly what millions of people have done whilst participating in an activity known as couch surfing.Couch surfing is traveling on a budget, using a broad network of contacts in order to get overnight accommodation for free, or at as little cost as possible. Participants join dedicated(专业的)websites, providing as much information about themselves as possible in order to make others feel comfortable hosting them, or using them as a host.Various safety features are generally available in such online networks, like verification of names and addresses, personal references, and 'vouching for' a particular member as a reliable host or guest. As well as the financial advantages of couch surfing, participants also claim that the practice gives them a more unique, authentic travel experience, allowing them to experience culture and cuisine through the locals, rather than from the confines of sanitized tourist accommodation.
