The action film WolfWarriors2(《战狼2》) topped the box office in the highest number, reached 3.4 billion

yuan (about $506 million) in just 13 days.

The movie, directed by and starring the action star Wu Jing, is now China’s top grossing film(最卖座电影), breaking the record previously held by Steven Chow’s fantasy comedy TheMermaid.

WolfWarriors2 tells the story of a former Chinese Special Forces operative’s(特种部队特工) adventures

to rescue compatriots(同胞) and local friends in a war-torn region of Africa.

The success of the film has been beyond the expectations of all, including the production team.

“Yu Shizhi once said: ‘The audience is kind. They see all flaws(缺点), but don’t tell.’ I will continue

to work hard to shoot great films for Chinese viewers,” said director Wu Jing.

The movie is breaking the records at a surprising speed. Single-day earnings are over 200 million yuan

for more than 10 days, breaking China’s box office new records.

WolfWarriors2 and the previous record-holder TheMermaid were released in similar number of theaters

and both recorded similar attendance in the first eight days of screening. However, starting from the ninth

day, the number of ticket sales for TheMermaid began to fall, while that for WolfWarrior2 continued to grow.

Although kung fu being a familiar element(元素) in Chinese films, military action had a large space

to fill in China’s film market. Before WolfWarriors2, the highest earning action film in China was action

comedy KungFuYoga(2017) starring Jackie Chan, which earned 1.75 billion yuan. The box office record for

military action was held by OperationMekong(2016) with 1.18 billion yuan in ticket sales.
