In the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD), the 15th day of the 8th lunar month was established as the "Mid-Autumn Festival". From then on, sacrificing to the moon was very popular, and has become a custom ever since.
中秋节有三千多年历史，可以追溯到商代时对月亮的崇拜。因为中秋节 的重要地位，历代诗人都会为中秋节写诗，关于中秋节的故事、传奇在 民间广为流传，中秋节的起源也被历代中国人探究。
The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋起源
The term "Mid-Autumn" first appeared in the book Rites of Zhou (周礼), written in the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). But the term only related to the time and season; the festival didn't exist at that point. “中秋”一词最早出现在战国时期《周礼》一书中，但是该词只和时间和季节有关，当时还没有中秋节。 In the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), it was popular to appreciate the moon. Many poets liked to create poems related to the moon when appreciating it. There is a legend that Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty visited the Moon Palace in his dream and heard a wonderful song.

The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival (Chinese characters above) is one of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chinese legends say that the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day. Based on the Gregorian calendar, this year's August Moon Festival will be held on September 12.

• On the New Year's Eve ,most families watch Spring Festival Gala on television,people work far away from home will manage to come back, regardless of long-distance travel, so the "Grand Dinner on New Year's Eve" is also called "Family Reunion Dinner". Whatever the financial condition is, every family will make the dinner the most sumptuous（豪华的） and ceremonious（隆重的 ）one in the year. At twelve o'clock, when a new year drives off the old, every family will shoot off firecrackers to greet new days and send off old ones.
• According to history records, the Spring Festival derives from god and ancestor worships in the Shang dynasty. Nowadays, this superstitious meaning has faded away and is replaced with a symbol of unification（统一）, happiness and hope.

Legend has it that a long, long time ago, there were many fierce birds and beasts, hurting people and livestock everywhere, and people organized to fight them, and a sacred bird landed on earth because it got lost, but was accidentally shot to death by an unsuspecting hunter.

• People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, for breakfast, as they think "jiaozi" in sound means "bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new". Southern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour糯米粉) on this occasion, because as a homophone同音字, niangao means "higher and higher, one year after another.
• The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Chu Yuan. He was a good and respected man, but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor's court。
• Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon of the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals, the other two being the Autumn Moon Festival and Chinese New Year.

Dragon boat racing is an indispensable（不可缺少的） part of the festival, held all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragonshaped canoes（独木舟） pulling the oars hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.
