Abstract

Nanotechnologistshavediscoverednewfilteringmediaforeffectivefiltrations.Thenanofiberbasedfilteringmedia,madeupoffibersofdiameterrangingfrom100to1000nm,canbeconvenientlyproducedbyelectrospinningtechnique.Thisarticleaddressesthecurrentstateofartinfiltrationsbyusingthenanofibrousfilteringmedia.Thesefilteringmediaarebeingsurfacemodifiedtoimprovetheirspectrumandcaptureefficiencyoffiltration.Thedevelopmentalobjectivesforimprovingthenanofiberbasedfilteringmediaarelowerenergyconsumption,longerfilterlife,highfiltrationcapacityandeasiermaintenance;whichareelaboratedfrommanufacturingpointofview.Somepracticalconstraintslikepleatingofthin,extremelylowweightanddelicatemembranesarealsodiscussed.Nanofibrousfilteringmediacouldbeusedforfiltrationofblood,water,air,beverages,gases,chemicals,oils,dieselandpetrol,etc.©2007ElsevierB.V.Allrightsreserved.
