The Story of Chang'e Flying to the Moon
Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Chang'e. She was married to a
skilled archer named Houyi. One day, the Earth was in great danger as there were ten
suns in the sky, scorching the land and causing havoc. Houyi, being a talented archer,
shot down nine of the suns, saving the Earth.
As a reward for his bravery, the Queen Mother of Heaven gifted Houyi with an elixir of
immortality. However, Houyi did not want to become immortal without his beloved wife,
Chang'e. So, he decided to keep the elixir safe at home.
One day, a wicked and jealous apprentice of Houyi discovered the elixir. He tried to steal it
while Houyi was away. Fearing that he would succeed, Chang'e swallowed the elixir to
prevent him from taking it. Immediately, she felt her body becoming lighter, and she
started to float. Chang'e rose higher and higher until she reached the moon.
When Houyi returned home and discovered what happened, he was devastated. He
looked up at the moon and called out to his wife. To his surprise, he saw a silhouette
resembling Chang'e on the moon. He decided to honor her by offering sacrifices and
burning incense on the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth
lunar month.
To this day, people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by offering sacrifices to Chang'e,
burning incense, and admiring the beauty of the moon. They also enjoy mooncakes,
which symbolize the moon and reunion.
