It’s time for me to wave goodbye to my school and it’s your turn to struggle as Senior 3 students. On the point of leaving, I’d like to share some personal experience with you and I hope what I say may be helpful to you. When it comes to how to face up the NCEE, I have to say a positive attitude is of the greatest importance. It’s utterly pointless in complaining about the heavy burden and the diffi culties in your study. Since they are here to stay, it’s how we deal with them that counts. Consequently, the appropriate attitude is regarding them as the cornerstones which will help you hit the peak of success. Take it easy, and always remember the saying that one can because he thinks he can.On the other hand, please attach great importance to your study and don’t allow anything to deprive you of your concentration on preparing for the NCEE. Needlessly to say, there is no easy access to success without making painstaking efforts. The old saying has it tha t constant dripping wears away stones, so you can achieve your goals as long as you go to extreme lengths to realize your dream. By the way, it pays to make full use of the time during class, but I don’t recommend that you burn the midnight oil without paying attention to your health.Come on, friends! When success turns up around the corner, it will compensate all the pains in the course of struggling. Don’t hesitate to strive for your own future.Sincerely yours,Yin si-yuan听力录音原文I. Obviously, his mother wanted to talk to his son but unexpectedly, what she got as a response from her son was “ can’t talk now.I am chatting.” In fact, what the picture conveys here is far from what a web user is doing in his virtual world. Instead, it reveals thought-provoking phenomenon. However, we have to admit such a phenomenon is quite familiar to us. It can be understandable that online chatting, as a new communicative way, has become more and more popular, especially with us youngsters. Taking me as an example, I used to be sitting in front of the computer day and night, typing, playing games or chatting. You know what happened ?It was not only a waste of time but also caused me to pay less and less attention to people and things around. As a result, I neglected my study and gave up much social communication which is essential for mental health.Of course now I realized we should take a positive attitude towards the Internet so as not to be addicted to it. We should try to reduce the negative effect to the minimum and make online chatting our valuable assistant. We should interact with our parents frequently to narrow the generation gap. Just imagine if we become too dependent on chatting on the Internet, it may, in the long run, give rise to more serious social problems.Tape scriptPart A Short ConversationsDirections: In Part A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. Yet,as this"uplifting"new exhibition at the Queen's Gallery reveals,Charles was a"brilliant operator who played his moves likes a chess grand-master"--and who used art to glorify the monarchy(君主制)and to justify his rule. The exhibition brings together a wealth of paintings, drawings and furniture he inherited or collected over the course of his"remarkably successful reign(统治)".The result is a"grand"celebration of"a king who brought happiness back to his nation."Art certainly played a"vital"role in establishing the Restoration, said Laura Cumming in the Observer.Prints in the exhibition show Charles"effortlessly"calming a horse or offering his "healing touch to the sick".The Shropshire oak in which he famously hid from the Round-heads after the Battle of Worcester can be seen again and again. Most"striking"of all is John Michael Wright's painting, which is so big that the viewer is"just about on kissing level with the royal feet".But the show has an inherent flaw, said Nancy Durrant in the Times. On climbing up to the throne,Charles found that most of his father's vast art collection had been sold off by Oliver Cromwell, and he set about securing its return. While this ambitious initiative was"effective"in England,it worked less well in recovering the masterpieces that were sold overseas--and their absence is disappointing once you learn what was lost.Nevertheless Charles added some marvelous art to the Royal collection, said Jonathan Jonesin the Guardian. There are many fine British works in this show--notably Peter Lely's painting of a royal mistress,Louise de Kerouaille,Duchess of Portsmouth.However,the"drop-dead highlights"of Charles's collection come from abroad:they include Lorenzo Lotto's"intensely atmospheric"1527portrait of Andrea Odoni, and the hundreds of"amazing"drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, four of which are on show here. What an"absorbing"exhibition this is.60.According to the passage Charles II_________A.suffered the same fate as his father,Charles IB.ruled the nation in an incomparably fierce wayC.was one of the greater chess players in historyD.started his reign while the nation was in trouble61.According paragraph2,the"inherent flaw"refers to the fact that_________.A.Charles II brought most of his father's vast art collections abroadB.visitors will feel disappointed to see what is on show in the exhibitionC.Oliver Cromwell wasn't able to recover the masterpieces he once soldD.the exhibition fails to include some masterpieces sold overseas in history62.Which of the following statements is true of the exhibition?A.It is most famous for its local collections.B.It shows how art was used to restore the nation.C.It excludes what Charles II collected in his reign.D.It includes hundreds of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci.(C)Between the last application season and the current one,Swarthmore College,a school nationally renowned for its academic rigor, changed the requirements for students for admission into its next freshman class. It made filling out the proper forms easier.Swarthmore is hardly alone in the desire to eliminate obstacles for a bounty of applicants. Over the last decade, many elite colleges have adjusted their applications in ways that remove disincentives and maximize the odds that the number of students contesting to get in remains robust-or,even better, grows larger. In one sense, that's an egalitarian(平等主义的)approach worth compliment and a sensibleattempt to be sure that no qualified candidate is missed. But there's often a less pure motive in play. In our increasingly status-oriented society,a school's reputation is improved by a low acceptance rate, which can even influence how U.S.News&World Report ranks it.And unless a school is shrinking the size of its students body, the only way to bring its acceptance rate down is to get its number of applicants up.So,many colleges methodically generate interest only to frustrate it. They woo applicants for the purpose of turning them down. And there can be other justifications for what looks like a loosening of application demands. Smith College and several other similarly prominent colleges no longer require the SAT or ACT, and Kathleen McCarney, the president of Smith College, said that that's not a bid for more applicants. It's a recognition that top scores on those tests correlate with high family income and may say more about an applicant's economic advantages--including,say,private SAT tutoring-than about their academic potential.Jim Bock,Swarthmore's dean of admissions, said that by lightening the essay load for its current applicants, the college was less concerned about increasing its overall number of applicants than about making sure candidates of great merit didn't miss out on Swarthmore and vice versa. He mentioned the hypothetical example of a high school student from a low-income family who works10or more hours a day and doesn't have sufficient time to do different essays for different schools. But will Swarthmore's applicants this year give quite as much thought regarding whether it is suitable and the right home for them?I'm betting not. When it's very easy for a student to apply to yet one more college and each school is simply another desirable box of cereal on the top shelf that he or she is determined to reach, there's inadequate thought to a tailored match, which is what the admission process should strive for. It's what the measure of success should be.63.What changes has Swarthmore College made in the application process?A.It simplified its application procedure.B.It lowered its requirements for admission.C.It expanded the size of its next freshman class.D.It eliminated obstacles for minority applicants.64.The underlined word"woo"(Para.3)is closest in meaning to_________.A.respectB.pursueC.imposeD.cheat65.Kathleen McCarney holds that the results of the SAT or ACT_________.A.should pay an essential role in the admissions processB.conceal the uneven distribution of educational resourcesC.reflect test-takers'academic potential to a large extentD.are closely related to test-takers'family income levels66.According to the author, the success of a school's admission process lies in_________.A.improving the school's reputation nationwideB.increasing the overall number of applicants for the schoolC.recruiting as many genuine students as possibleD.making suitable matches between applicants and the schoolSection CDirections:Read the passage carefully.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have justread.(A)In 1823, a young woman noticed a strange fossil on a beach near Lyme Regis, England. She dug out the bones and had them carried to her home. She carefully arranged the skeleton on a table. Then she saw something extraordinary. The creature’s neck was a meter long — more than half the length of its body. It was unlike any animal living on Earth.Even at a young age, Mary Anning had a talent for spotting unusual or curious fossils. Her father died in 1810, leaving her family in debt, so Mary began selling her fossils to collectors. A year later, aged just 12, she made her first major discovery — a crocodile-like skull with a long skeleton. It turned out to be a sea creature that lived long ago. Named ichthyosaur, or “fish-lizard”, it was the first extinct animal known to science.Fossil hunting brought in money, but it was a dangerous occupation. One day, a rock fall killed her dog and almost buried Mary. Despite the dangers, she continued to look for new finds. The long-necked fossil she uncovered in 1823 was another long-dead sea reptile (爬行动物). Known as a plesiosaur, it would inspire legends — including that of the Loch Ness Monster. Five years later, she found a fossil with wing bones and a long tail. It was one of the first examples of a pterosaur — a flying creature that disappeared millions of years ago.Mary was not only a skilled fossil hunter; she also carefully examined and recorded her finds. However, she received little credit from other scientists. Only one of her scientific writings was published in her lifetime, in 1839. She was also not allowed to join London’s Geological Society, as only men could become members.Mary Anning died in 1847, but her contributions have not been forgotten. Her finds are now displayed in museums in London and Paris. The beach near her home is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the Jurassic Coast. Her life continues to inspire visitors hoping to find their own fossil wonders. According to Britain’s Natural History Museum, Mary Anning was “the greatest fossil hunter the world has ever known”. She was also a scientist who changed the way we think about life on Earth.56.Why did Mary Anning start selling fossils?A. To establish her name as a scientist.B. You may be urged to consider the possibility — no, probability — that they are “gifted” in some way, if not in maths, then in music or art. It’s window-dressing (门面粉饰) for subscription (订阅) services, but the other day, a line caught my eye that I haven’t been able to forget. “Talent isn’t everything; the important thing is to teach your child to be kind.”This positioning of “kindness” as the opposite of “talent” is common once you start looking for it. Kindness is, everywhere: the consolation (安慰) prize, the award for perfect attendance. A few years ago, none of this would have struck me as noteworthy. I believed a tendency towards kindness wasn’t something we were born with, but instead something entirely reliant on cultivation. These days I wonder about that, and about our determination to see it that way.It brings us to the problem of kindness; not only the fact that, in plenty of settings, it can be a code for weakness or neediness, but the fact that the word itself has been emptied out through misuse. Real kindness is not this. Kindness, I try to tell my children, is strength. My child who is always kind to others is frequently confused by the unfriendliness of others, at which point I have to bite my tongue. “Jessica was rude to you because she’s silly” is not what I’m going to teach my seven-year-old.Can you teach someone to be kind? Of course, but also only sort of, not entirely. You can discipline them with reason and rewards in the same way you can send them to piano every week and eventually they’ll learn to play Twinkle Twinkle. For example, the mysterious large-eyed, bronze statues of the ancient Shu Kingdom, discovered at the Chinese archeological site at Sanxingdui, were believed to have been able to look across great distances into the stars. In reality, humans can see very little of the night sky with the naked eye. And, for a long while, people were unable to understand what they could see. 67Our power to investigate and thus understand space changed dramatically when the first telescope (望远镜) was angled at the night sky, increasing as it did the power of the human eye and enabling us to understand that the universe is far larger than was previously imaginable. The planets were seen to be worlds similar to our own, many of them even having their own moons.68 Some 300 years later, we learnt that the Milky Way itself was just one galaxy among billions of others, spread across the blackness of space like great islands of light and matter floating in a vast cosmic ocean.Almost 400 years after the first Earth-based telescope was invented, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched into orbit, giving astronomers indeed all of us — the first breathtakingly beautiful images of our universe taken from beyond Earth. 69 It has also helped us to work out the age and nature of the universe, and discover the incredible fact that the universe is expanding at an ever-increasing speed.70 Currently, China operates the world’s largest and most powerful radio telescope, the FAST telescope, completed in 2016. The 500-metre dish of the “Eye of Heaven”, as it is known, is being used in the search for dark matter. This vast dish also has the ability to explore regions of space billions of light years away, right at the edge of the visible universe.IV. Summary Writing71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Parents, teachers, and anyone who regularly deals with teenagers know how difficult the adolescent years can be. Adolescents have always been known to do wild — even dangerous — thing. Now, brain-imaging technology allows scientists to study the physical development of the brain in more detail than ever before. Their discoveries have led to a new theory of why teens act the way they do.Recently, scientists discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are far from fully developed. Only during adolescence do our brains truly “grow up”. During this time, they go through great changes, like a computer system being upgraded. This “upgrade” was once thought to be finished by about age 12. Now, scientists have concluded that our brains continue to change until age 25. Such changes make us better at balancing our impulses (冲动)with the need to follow rules. However, a brain that is still developing does this awkwardly. The result, scientists claim, is the unpredictable behavior seen in teenagers. The studies confirm that teens are more likely to take risks and behave in extreme ways. Fortunately, the news isn’t all negative. As brain scientist B.J. Casey points out, the teen brain inspires such behavior in order to help teenagers prepare for adult life. One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens view risks and rewards. Researchers found that when teens think about rewards, their brains release more of the chemicals that create pleasure than an adult brain would. Researchers believe this makes the rewards seem more important than the risks and makes teens feel the excitement of new experiences more keenly than adults do.Research into the structure of the teen brain also found that it makes social connections seem especially rewarding. As such, teens have an intense need to meet new people. It, therefore, connects social rewards with even more pleasure. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends, which is believed to make them more successful in life.V. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passageMan is slowly changing all the time. What will man be like in the future——in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now?Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head, and the forehead in particular, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a usefulpurpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.In spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.Questions:11. Why will there be the change of future man’s forehead size?12. Which of the following is true about a human being in the future?13. What is the main idea of the passage?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passageBurn rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. I started my firm with $80,000 amonth. Four months after my home-design company was set up, I had only a quarter of the starting capital left in the bank. Later on, I realized that times of great change always bring out the risk takers.People spend a lot more time online looking for information. So my traditional way to offer solution in an office is out of fashion. I didn’t turn away from my specialized field entirely, but instead linked it to the Internet. My new plan was to offer consumers descriptions of home-design products by using a special software and let them modify the designs. Then we can enable them to get online professional and constructional help to have their houses built, decorated and furnished according to their own choice. To realize my plan I needed investors, so 1 continued to meet regularly with venture capitalists. But they constantly turned down my request. However, I was working nonstop—struggling to turn the key in the lock, to find the right way ahead. The pressure was terrible. It was just at this time that my parents and sisters stepped up. Two hundred thousand dollars. A lot of money to them, invested in this crazy son and brother without a moment's hesitation. Dad and Mom had driven out from Chicago and seen the passion in my little office and the trouble at home. With their help my company survived and has been prospering ever since. Questions:14. How much money was left four months after the foundation of the company?15. Which of the following was not the solution after the speaker figured out the cause of the failure?16. Who finally gave the speaker fund to help his company survive?Section CDirections: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. We spent two hours there.M: Then you may have lost it there?W: No, because at noon we went to a nearby restaurant, and I paid the bill.M: What color is your handbag?W: Black, but the zipper is golden.M: What’s inside it?W: A red purse and a letter from my parents. My passport is also in it. What Shall I do? M: Don’t worry. We’ll do our best to help you. Here’s a form—write down your name, address and telephone number on it. We’ll have to discuss these costs with the finance department. What about advertising?W: Marketing department has some interesting ideas for television commercials.M: TV? Isn’t that a bit too expensive for us? What’s wrong with advertising in the papers, as usual?W: Quite frankly, it’s just not enough anymore. We need to be more aggressive in order to keep ahead of our competitors.M: Will we be able to afford all this?W: I’ll look into it, but I think the higher costs will prove worthwhile. These investments will result in higher profits for our company.M: OK, but we’ll have to look at the figures more closely.B3-4 语法模拟练习(一)(A) 1. everything 2. less often 3. stamped 4. when 5. was reading 6. whose7. is filled/has been filled 8. will not lose(B) 9. coming 10. explore 11. whether 12. was founded 13. to create14. an 15. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. When young women who smoke start to think about having children, they also need to think about quitting smoking. This will be better for her own health and for that of her baby.If a woman smokes during pregnancy she takes a big chance with her baby's health. There is a greater possibility that she will lose the baby during pregnancy. The baby could also be born too early, before the lungs are ready, so he or she will suffer breathing problems and lung disease later in life.Researches shows that babies often weigh less when the mother smokes. And a baby that weighs too little is often sick with lots of health problems. Smaller babies are more likely to need special care and stay longer in the hospital. Some may die either at birth or within the first year.Another recent study finds that children are more likely to develop lung cancer if their mothers smoke. The study also shows that the danger of lung cancer increase only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father's smoking does not affect a child's chance of developing lung cancer.Questions:11. What’s the main purpose of the passage?12. What's the bad effect of smoking for women in pregnancy?13. Who is most likely to develop lung cancer?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. This is the VOA Special English Education Report.A few weeks ago, we talked about the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL. A listener asks if American colleges and universities also accept the IELTS exam. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. The test measures true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration or employment. The IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. The test is used by government agencies, schools and professional organizations in one hundred and twenty countries. And, yes, that includes the United States. The many American schools that accept the IELTS can be found on the Web at .Some schools accept both the TOEFL and the IELTS. But the graduate school at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for example, says it prefers the IELTS.The listening and speaking parts are the same for everyone who takes the IELTS. But people have a choice of reading and writing tests -- either academic or general training. The listening test takes thirty minutes. There are forty questions based on a recording. The reading test takes sixty minutes. Students answer forty questions based on three written passages. The writing test also takes sixty minutes. Students have to write two essays. The shorter one is a description of something; the longer one has to support an argument. The speaking test takes less than fifteen minutes. The score is based on a recorded talk between the student and a test examiner. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report.Questions:14. It is said that in New England one is always climbing hills. A large part of New England is also made up of farms and farming lands. Yet New England is not really a farming area. The farms are small. Generally they are only large enough to support one family. It also happens that the soil of New England is not good. This soil has been worked and planted for so many years that it has lost its value. Most New Englanders today work in factories or small businesses. In these factories they makewatches and clocks, shoes, clothing, special tools for industry, leather goods, etc. New England workmen are famous for their skill in making many of these things. This skill is often passed down in families from father to son.11. Why is it said that in New England one is always climbing hills? (A)12. Why is New England not a farming area? (C)13. How do New England workmen learn the skill in making things? (D)Question 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.Buried treasure is scattered over every part of the United States. Why don’t people find it? As a matter of fact, a great deal of buried treasure is found much more than we ever hear about. People who find treasure have a habit of keeping it to themselves, either because they are afraid that others might claim it, or because they want to avoid paying taxes on it. There are perhaps a dozen unreported treasure finds for each one reported.Florida has probably yielded more buried treasure than any other part of the United States. The Gulf of Mexico used to be infested with pirates attacked Spanish ships. Often they were unable to dispose of their goods immediately. They packed it in large boxes or sacks and buried it in secret hiding places on the shore. Often they drew a map of the area so that they could come back later and know where to dig.14. Why don’t people report their treasure find?(B)15. What is the estimated ratio of unreported treasure finds to reported ones?(C)16. Why can Florida yield more buried treasure?(C)Section CDirections: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.(A)Joseph used to be a salesman. He 25 (work) 30 years for the same company and now he had to retire. As a sign of gratitude, the company held a dinner in 26 honor. “Joseph,”announced the boss, “it is my great honor 27 (present) a gift as a souvenir (纪念品) to you on behalf of the company.”Sam walked down to the front of the table and accepted 28 gift with pride. It was a gold watch and on it was written “To faithful Joseph for 30 years of service.” Joseph wept. “I am lost for words to describe 29 happy I am right now!”At home, Joseph showed his wife the watch. “For this you worked 30 years —a cheap gold-plated watch?” his wife asked, 30 (look) at the watch critically. “It’s the thought that really matters,” answered Joseph. “The important thing is that I am not working any more.” His wife held the gold watch to her ear and said, “31 is your watch.”(B)Human males living with their moms may not expect to have much luck hooking up this Valentine’s Day. 32 that isn’t the case with other species. Among the northern muriqui monkeys, males that spend the most time around their mothers seem to get an added boost 33 mating time rolls around. The findings, 34 (publish) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, suggest that females in some species may have evolved to play a critical role 35 their sons’ reproductive success. Karen Strier, the paper’s lead author and a professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, says the paper “extends” the so-called grandmother hypothesis, a concept in which human females evolved to spend more time 36 (help) offspring (后代).The research team visited a protected reserve in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest37 team members observed and collected genetic data from a group of 67 wild monkeys. They found that six out of the 13 adult males they studied spent 38 (much) time in close proximity (接近) to their mothers than would be expected by chance. These same six monkeys, on average, sired (繁殖) the greatest number of offspring. The investigators 39 (puzzle) about the reason. “It’s not like we see moms intervening and helping their sons out,” Strier says. “Maybe they just get more familiar with other females.” Strier also found that there was no inbreeding among sons and their close female relatives,a process that might also be mediated by mothers.“Mating may be less random 40 their mothers’ influence is there,” she says.Section BDirections: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. Are organic foods more nutritious than conventionally raised ones? Stanford University scientists cast 41 on that concept last year in a widely publicized report. But the secret is that whether your apples and spinach are organic or not, nutrient levels can vary 42 depending on growing conditions, such as soil type and quality, temperature, and days of sun versus rain. As a consumer, you have no independent way of confirming that you have chosen a 43 batch (批次). But what if you had a handheld scanner that would allow you to check nutrient density? Professor Dan Kittredge, executive director of the Bionutrient Food Association, is 44 the funds to research such a device. The basic technology has existed for decades. NIR spectroscopy (光谱学) — the modality that Kittredge is currently focusing on —has found 45 in manufacturing, medicine, agriculture and astronomy. NIR works on the principle that different molecules (分子) vibrate in slightly different ways. When infrared light (红外线) is transmitted through or reflected from a 46 sample, certain wavelengths are absorbed more than others. By measuring the fraction of near-infrared light absorbed at each wavelength, scientists can obtain a 47 fingerprint that is characteristic of the sample. The results are precise — and fast.Until recently, NIR and related forms of vibrational spectroscopy were 48 to the laboratory, where they required large benchtop instruments that only skilled scientists could operate. Now, with miniaturization, they are being packaged in simple handheld devices that a worker without a Ph.D. in chemistry can use in a warehouse or in the field.Still, NIR has one major limitation as far as a supermarket scanner is concerned, which is that it cannot give an accurate 49 for compounds(化合物) at a concentration of less than 0.1 percent. To solve this problem, Kittredge is now working with others to run thousands of assays on key foods to establish the algorithms (算法) needed to develop a workable scanner since plants develop certain types of compounds in specific ratios (比例) to 50 minerals.III. Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Some people think lost memories are impossible to regain, but, 51 , that is not true. A new research reveals that even facts “forgotten” by people during a busy day may be retrieved if this is followed by a good night’s sleep. In the study, researchers from the University of Chicago asked 52 to remember simple words. Researchers, writing in the journal Nature, said the brain could “rescue”lost memories during the night. Many found their memories 53 towards the end of the day, but the following morning, as the experiment has shown, those who had had a 54 sleep could recall much more. The 12 people tested in the experiment were played words created through a speech synthesizer (合成器) which were purposely 55 to understand. Initially, the written version of the word was available, but afterwards the volunteers were asked to identify the word from the 56 version only. Tests revealed that as the day ended the ability to recall the right word tended to tail off. But in 57 , when the volunteers were retested after a good night’s sleep, they were able to recall some words that they had “forgotten” the previous evening.Dr Daniel, one of the study authors, explained, “When the brain is first asked to remember something, that memory is laid down in an ‘unstable’ state, meaning that it is possible that it could be 58 . At some point, the brain consolidates(巩固) important things into a 59 state. However, it was possible for a “stable” memory to be made “unstable” again. This would mean that memories could be modified then filed away again 60 new experiences.”“But, according to the experiment results, sleep consolidates memories and 61 them against subsequent interference or decay(衰退),”he added. “62 , sleep also appears to ‘recover’ or restore memories. If performance is reduced by decay, sleep might actively recover what has been lost.”Dr Karim Nader, from the Department of Psychology in McGill University in Montreal, said: “Memory research is undergoing a 63 — no longer is memory thought to be a hard-wiring of the brain. 64 , it seems to be a process of storage and clearance. Sleep helps some memories ‘mature’ and also 65 other unimportant memories.”51. A. probably B. actually C. suddenly D. generally52. A. volunteers B. sleepers C. scholars D. authors53. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. When I boarded an Amtrak train this summer, I had no idea what kind of ride I was in for.Upon arrival at my home stop, I realized that my mobile phone was missing. I still had hope, though. A free service can use GPS information to locate lost phones on a map. After a couple of days, the service e-mailed me with a map revealed it to be at a house in Seat Pleasant, Md.But how was I going to retrieve a phone five states away? On a whim, I posted a note to my blog followers about my lost phone. And I included a map showing the green locator dot over a satellite image of a nondescript house. It did pay off. Using the address, local police got involved. The homeowner confessed to stealing the phone — no doubt baffled as to how the police had known exactly how to find him. And a day later I had the phone back. But, to my surprise, not everyone is as happy as I am. Lots of people were disturbed by the affair. They saw my posting the thief’s address as ____________________.My initial thought was: “Are they expressing sympathy for the thief? When you steal something, don’t you risk giving up some rights? How was my blog post any different from the “wanted” posters of suspects’ photographs that still hang in post offices?”Of course, the difference in this case is that I, not law enforcement, posted the map and began the chase. Does that constitute a breach of the thief’s rights? Those are tricky questions. Even when the government or law-enforcement agencies want to get cell location information, the law is not always clear-cut. Sometimes the police require a warrant (许可证) to obtain such information from cell phone companies; in other instances, they do not. In my case, there’s not even much law to guide us. Yet combining the powers of geotracking and social networking seemed such an obvious tactic that, at the time, I hardly gave it a second thought. In the end, maybe what society really needs is an app called Find My Moral Compass.66.To get his phone back, the author _____.A. turned to the police for help directlyB. posted the image of his phone onlineC. used a service known as geotrackingD. asked the followers to contact the thief67.Which of the following is most likely the missing part in Paragraph 5?A. a dishonest way of revengeB. an unpleasant violation of privacyC. a demonstration of modern technologyD. a misinterpretation of the law68.The underlined word “clear-cut” in Paragraph 8 probably means _____.A. definiteB. cut throughC. understandableD. unacceptable69.Which of the following statements FAILS to describe author’s thoughts?A. Before the journey he never thought his phone could be lost.B. He never thought that his phone could be regained.C. He never thought that people would disagree on his way of getting the phone back.D. He originally thought it to be ridiculous to highlight the rights of the thieves. It was a horrible feeling; I was having a heart attack. Yet when clinicians designed the guidebook they use to diagnose(诊断) psychiatric maladies, they made the descriptions gender-neutral. Today, evidence is mounting that in turning a blind eye to gender, they are actually doing their patients a disservice. As more researchers investigate sex differences in depression, the inescapable conclusion is that gender influences every aspect of these disorders.More recently, researchers have started to study the deeper dissimilarities. Perhaps the most important of these, and the one most frequently misunderstood by people of both genders, is the difference in symptoms expressed by women and men. For women, the primary emotion of depression is usually sadness. For men, it is more typically anger or irritability, often coupled with recklessness (不顾一切). As a result, many women and men, including depressed men, mistake male depression for general frustration and restlessness rather than a serious disorder in desperate need of intervention. Depressed men are also much less likely to seek help than depressed women, and they are much more likely to hurt themselves. The big question is whether the variations are a matter of nature or nurture(后天养育). Some researchers believe the brain chemistry of depression is the same in men and women but that social norms do not let men express sadness, so they often have difficulty articulating their symptoms. “They’ll say, ‘I’m not getting as much done,’ or ‘I keep getting into fights with my girlfriend,’ rather than ‘I’m sad,’” says Sam Cochran, director of counseling at the University of Iowa. “But once we get past that, the symptoms are pretty much the same as for the female patients.”Cochran and others who emphasize the importance of cultural influences are increasingly in the minority. An ever growing body of evidence suggests that biology sets men and women apart in ways that have real consequences for mood and behavior. Not surprisingly, these differences emerge from the very substances that define gender in the first place: sex hormones (激素).Understanding the effects of these hormones on the brain may be the only way to make sure that every depressed patient gets the right treatment. The biochemistry of sex hormones in the brain, however, is difficult to study because the hormones themselves are hard to measure and their effects are so widespread. But the evidence is strong for a primary role in gross brain physiology. The male brain tends to be larger than the female brain and matures more slowly. Although scientists have not yet pinpointed the mechanism behind the delay, animal research has shown that one main component(组成部分) of the male hormones can increase brain size by stimulating the production of a protein that contributes to neuron(神经元) development. The additional growth may mean that the male brain needs more time to reach full maturity.73.What did the author say of the action of describing the symptoms gender-neutral?A. It is quite reasonable for the clinicians to make it gender-neutral.B. Clinicians are unaware of the different responses male and female make.C. Therapists should have made the real conditions known to the public.D. It is better if patients could learn the truth from the researchers.74.According to the passage, when it comes to depression, men _____.A. would share his own sorrows with his friendsB. actually call for immediate help from othersC. are less likely to express his anger than womenD. are mistaken because of their frustration75.For those believing in nurture theory, men would have these responses because _____.A. men are normally expected to be stronger than women areB. sex hormones have a bigger impact on men than on womenC. men are less likely to be influenced by traditional beliefsD. men’s shyness prevent themselves from expressing their emotions76.Which of the following is TRUE according to the last two paragraphs?A. More scientists believe it is nurture that leads to the variations in symptoms.B. Different elements of sex hormones may result in different depression symptoms.C. It takes men far more time to get matured than women.D. Scientists did experiments on animal reactions because it was hard to measure hormones.77.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. Sex matters in understanding depression reactionsB. How different people suffer from depressionC. Reasons for our bluesD. Different theories in explaining depression symptomsSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. In a few years you will be able to order a transcript of your entire genetic code for less than $1,000. Adults cannot do much to alter their biological lot, but what if parents could examine their unborn child’s genome? Two different university laboratories have developed tests that will reveal the entirety of a baby’s genetic code using just a blood sample from the mother plus a drop of saliva (唾液) from the father.Prenatal (出生前的) whole-genome sequencing will provide volumes of information beyond the currently available tests exclusively for genetic disorders such as Down’s syndrome or Tay-Sachs disease. The three billion units of code furnished in the new tests will also dwarf the relative trickle(零散) of information provided by consumer gene-testing services such as 23andMe, which currently look only at perhaps about one million locations in the genome.Attitudes toward child rearing might change along with the new technology. Without careful planning, the new prenatal genetics might rob a child of the chance to make decisions best left until adulthood —whether or not to learn, for instance, if a mutation(突变) predicts the inevitability of Huntington’s disease 20 years hence.Another fear is that a customer without conferring with a genetics counselor can receive information via the Internet about a multifold greater risk of breast cancer. Similar laissez-faire action to prenatal whole-genome testing could portend (预示) tragedy.Ultimately certain agency will need to develop a comprehensive policy on prenatal whole-genome testing. Bioethics scholars wrote an analysis last summer that calls on the medical community to develop a guide to the most relevant genomic data for future parents. Unfortunately, there aren’t nearly enough trained genetics counselors to handle the coming upsurge in demand for this type of information. Without access to a much higher level of refined expertise, the secrets of our off spring’s genetic code will continue to remain an unnerving cipher — or worse.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statement in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)78.__________ is / are needed to complete a prenatal whole-genome testing.79.In which two ways is the new testing better than the current one?80.Under the influence of the new testing, when will decisions concerning the child be probablymade according to the passage?81.“Similar laissez-faire action to the testing” in Paragraph 5 probably refers to __________.2014届上海英语区县学校同步练习试卷集2第II 卷(共47分)I. In these factories they make watches and clocks, shoes, clothing, special tools for industry, leather goods, etc. New England workmen are famous for their skill in making many of these things. This skill is often passed down in families from father to son.11.Why is it said that in New England one is always climbing hills? (A)12.Why is New England not a farming area? (C)13.How do New England workmen learn the skill in making things? (D)Question 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.Buried treasure is scattered over every p art of the United States. Often they drew a map of the area so that they could come back later and know where to dig.14.Why don’t people report their treasure find?(B)15.What is the estimated ratio of unreported treasure finds to reported ones?(C)16.Why can Florida yield more buried treasure?(C)Section CDirections: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard.
