医学英语是一门非常有特色的学科。它有其特定的词汇结构体系、特定的语法规则和特定的语篇结构。医学英语措辞准确、表达客观、逻辑严密、行文简洁、词义明确、含义固定以及具有各种严格的应用文书语体特征。就词汇而言，医学英语中大量出现专业词汇和术语，而且医学词汇的运用主要有几个特点：①缩写词广泛使用于医嘱、处方、医学文章、药品器械广告中；②和普通英语一词多义的现象不同的是，在医学英语中，词汇的意义比较稳定；③医学英语很少使用具有夸张、比喻含义的词汇，因为医学论著注重事实和逻辑，需要的是科学性和严肃性。并且，医学英语用词较具体化，旨在表达得清楚和准确，避免歧义。
１医学英语的词源和发展
１．１医学英语的词源特点
医学英语的发展，从广义上讲，包括在英语的发展史中。英语属于日尔曼语系，英语的发展史大体可分为３个阶段：即古代英语、中世纪英语和近代英语。每个阶段英语都受到希腊拉丁语的影响。尤其是在近代，科技术语大量使用希腊拉丁语作为复合词的成分，创造很多学术上使用的新复合词。用文字将希腊语的医学术语记录下来的是希腊医学家、医学之父希波克
拉底。医学英语术语大部分源于古拉丁语、希腊语和古英语，在历史的变革中，演变为医学英语术语。
从词源学的角度来看，医学英语的专业名词和术语，有２／３以上的词汇都是源出拉丁、希腊语［１］。拉丁、希腊词素在医学英语词汇中之所以具有这样举足轻重的作用和影响，除了历史的原因以外，还与它们都拥有丰富的词缀有关。这些词缀可与不同的词干一起，能衍生无数新词。如：以ａｕｔｏ为前缀的词：ａｕｔｏ－ａｎｔｉｂｏｄｙ（自体抗体）、ａｕｔｏ－ｉｎｆｅｃｔｉｏｎ（自体传染）、ａｕｔｏｓｅｒｕｍ（自体血清），ａｕｔｏｖａｃｃｉｎｅ（自体菌苗）等等。以ｍｉｃｒｏ为词头的词：ｍｉｃｒｏｓｃｏｐｅ（显微镜）、ｍｉｃｒｏ－ｓｅｃｔｉｏｎ（显微切片）、ｍｉｃｒｏｓｐｈｅｒｏｃｙｔｅ（小球形红细胞）、ｍｉｃｒｏｂａｃ－ｔｅｒｉａ（细杆菌）、ｍｉｃｒｏｓｕｒｇｅｒｙ（显微外科）等等。所以随着医学的发展，当遇到新发现的疾病和症状等，需要安排新的复合词时，医学家常常会在希腊拉丁语中寻找其复合词的成分。
１．２医学英语数量
由于医学是一门复杂的科学，历史悠久、分支众多，所以其词汇量也就特别大。医学和许多学科相关，不仅涉及到与生物健康有关的各个学科，而且延伸到探究生命本质的各个领域，因此医学术语急剧增加。据说每年能产生出１５００个左右的新复合词。根据最新统计，医学词汇已经达到３２万词。在目前日益进步的社会里，医学的飞跃发展更是带来了大批新词。

面对如此数目庞大的医学英语词汇，我们分析了大量的医

学文献和医学词典以帮助医学生更好的掌握医学词汇，医学词语可以分为３类：
２．１普通英语特定医学词义
这类词语指的是在普通英语和医学英语中都能常见到的词汇，但词义不同。它除普通词义外，有着含义非常固定的医学词义。如以下例子中的ａｎｇｒｙ一词：

２．２独立医学术语词
独立医学术语词为非医学词素合成的医学专业术语，指一般仅出现在与医学有关的文章中而且词义单一的词汇，这些词绝大多数都是名词。例如：解剖学名词ａｒｔｅｒｙ（动脉）；症状体征名词ａｓｔｈｍａ（哮喘），ｉｎｓｏｍｎｉａ（失眠）；疾病名称ｃｈｏｌｅｒａ（霍乱）、ｄｉａｒｒｈｅａ（腹泻）；药物名称ｐｅｎｉｃｉｌｌｉｎ（青霉素）等等。纯医学词汇中，还有许多药品名、以发现者命名的疾病名和用开发者命名的医疗技术名词，这些词的首字母一般都要大写，如：Ｈｏｄｇｓｏｎ’ｓｌｙｍｐｈｏｍａ（霍奇森病）。
２．３医学词素合成的术语
根据上文对医学英语词汇词源学的分析，我们知道医学词汇主要来源于希腊拉丁语，因此这类词不同于普通英语、看上去晦涩难懂而且数量众多。但是这类术语却极富规律，是学生学习的重点。医学词素合成的术语就是由医学词素合成的医学专业专用术语，即由词根（ｗｏｒｄｒｏｏｔ），前缀（ｐｒｅｆｉｘ），后缀（ｓｕｆ－ｆｉｘ）和连接元音（ｃｏｍｂｉｎｉｎｇｖｏｗｅｌ）按照一定规律组合而成。根据调查研究和分类［２］，如果能掌握５００个词素、掌握医学术语词素分析法和词素合成法，那么对于医学生而言，可以不用查字典就可以理解性识别词素合成的术语。（关于医学术语词素分析法和词素合成法，笔者将在后续文章中详细阐述）。２．３．１词根词根又称词基或词干。它是任何一个单词的核心部分，它包含着这个单词的基本意义、通常来自希腊语或拉丁语，代表身体的一个部分。所有的医学词汇有一个或更多的词根。如ｇａｓｔｒ（胃），ｎｅｐｈｒ（肾），ｃａｒｄｉ（心）等。
２．３．２前缀（ｐｒｅｆｉｘ）前缀又称词头，加于词前，本身具有一定含义，可改变原词的意思，但一般不改变其词类。医学前缀通常表示“数字”、“时间”、“方向”、“位置”或“否定”的含义。如ｈｙ－ｐｏｔｅｎｓｉｏｎ（血压过低）中的ｈｙｐｏ－表示“低”；ｈｙｐｅｒｔｅｎｓｉｏｎ（血压过高）中的“ｈｙｐｅｒ－”表示“高”等等。
２．３．３后缀（ｓｕｆｆｉｘ）后缀又称词尾（ｗｏｒｄｅｎｄｉｎｇ），加于词后。医学词汇后缀可以改变词汇的意思，不同的后缀给词汇赋予不同的含义。如ｇａｓｔｒｉｔｉｓ（胃炎），ｇａｓｔｒａｌｇｉａ（胃痛），ｇａｓｔｒｏｓｃｏｐｙ（胃镜），ｇａｓｔｒｏｔｏｍｙ（胃切开术）等等。
２．３．４连接元音（ｃｏｍｂｉｎｉｎｇｖｏｗｅｌ）连接元音又称联合元音。是连接两个词根的元音，或连接词根与后缀的元音。连接元音多用“ｏ”，有时也用“ａ”、“ｅ”。连接元音只起连接作用，对词义无影响。另外，我们还要掌握建立使用连接元音的二个基本规律：①词根直接用于以元音字母开始的后缀前面，不需要连接元音。如：ｇａｓｔｒ＋ａｌｇｉａ→ｇａｓｔｒａｌｇｉａ（胃痛）和ｇａｓｔｒ＋ｉｔｉｓ→ｇａｓｔｒｉｔｉｓ（肾炎）等。②连接元音用于连接一个词根和一个以辅音字母开始的后缀，如：ｇａｓｔｒ＋ｏ＋ｐａｔｈｙ→ｇａｓｔｒｏｐａｔｈｙ（胃病）。③词根之间需要连接元音，如：ｇａｓｔｒ（词根）＋ｏ＋ｅｎｔｅｒ（词根）＋ｉｔｉｓ→ｇａｓｔｒｏｅｎｔｅｒｉｔｉｓ（胃肠炎）。
３医学词汇的发展
语言是人类进行思维和交际的工具，纵观医学英语词汇发展的历史。１７８１年听诊器的发明，Ｓｔｅｔｈｏｓｃｏｐｅ一词是随着这种器械的产生应运而生的。１８５２年以ＬｏｕｉｓｅＰａｓｔｅｕｒ的名字命名的ｐａｓｔｅｕｒｉｚａｔｉｏｎ进入医学词汇。计算机的广泛的运用，使词汇ＣＴ、ＭＲＩ成了家喻户晓的医学词汇。另一方面，一些疾病被控制，一些新的疾病出现，使医学词汇增加了一些新词，例如：ＡＩＤＳ（艾滋病）的出现，与ＡＩＤＳ有关的词汇进入医学词汇，例如：ＡＩＤＳ－ｒｅｌａｔｅｄ，ＡＤＩＳ－ａｆｆｅｃｔｅｄ。当人们发现新事物、遇到新问题、总结了新经验、发展了新思想的时候，便需要新字和新词来表达，这是因为旧有的、沿袭使用的表达方法已经不适合或不敷应用了。在目前日益进步的社会里，医学的飞跃发展带来了大批新词，包括了医学上的技术性用语及新制成的药品名称，新发现的病菌、病毒等。掌握医学词汇的构成特点将有助于医学生们跟上医学发展的进度，通过词汇的学习提高阅读的能力最终提高医学英语的整体水平。
