GEOGRAPHY
Anthropologists trace the common genetic
lineage of the human race to the West Coast of
Africa.
The last episode in the peopling of the planet
before the last Ice Age was the migration of
Mongolians from the steppes to Dong Bei all
the way to the Bering Straits of Alaska and to
the Americas, thensouth to the Pampas of
Patagonia north of the icy waters of the Islands
of Fire (Tierra del Fuego) of South America.
Physical features of Incas and Aztecs are not
dissimilar from those of the Jurchen during the
Jin Dynasty. Their ancestors reaching further in
time, the Native North American song, "As
One" in the songbook, sounds familiar to the
Nei Menggu ear as well as to the Shan-dwellers
across the two mighty rivers of the Huanghe
and the Chiangjiang.
Migration patterns during the 1800s saw a
massive exodus of Hans, particularly of the
waterborn Hakka that populates the juncture of
Guangdong and Fujian provinces, to many parts
of the world, assistedlargely by the needs ofthe
British Empire and the Americas.
The city of Shanghai lent its name to a verb, "to
shanghai," being drugged into submission,
spirited out of familiar surrounding only to
awaken to a new environment. It referred to
prospective farm workers abducted in Shanghai
and spirited out to vessels that then took them
to plantations in California. To be abducted
against one's will is to be shanghaied!
A Chinaman's hat is the name of an island off
the northern coast of Hawaii’s Oahu.Hawaii’s
Chinatown is just one of many around the world
where the cultural artifacts of the Han (along
with the Qin, the Ming, and the Qing), visual
and culinary, issavored and appreciated.
As a community development worker in the
Canadian western Prairies in the 70s, I drove
into small towns of predominantly eastern
European extractions that invariably supported
a lone restaurant owned and run by a Chinese.
We were bold enough to ask proprietors to
serve us the same food they had for lunch or
dinner, rather than what was printed in the
menu, since the offerings were tailored to
Caucasian taste.
Oral English students, in addition to getting an
image of China’s journey in historical time
from the Xia dynasty to the present, are also
familiarized with the maps of China and the
world, maps being afeng shui tool (relating
humans to the universe beyond geomancy to
geography) in the modern age. We also include
our image of a world map and a global grid.
The following are the English names of
countries with their Zhongwen equivalents. The
most populous country in the world hovers in
the upper echelons of the global economic
society. It is well that Zhongguoren learn the
names of countries where their relations had
gone to, as well as the countries from where an
increasing number of foreign students who attend China's Universities, the Shenyang
Aerospace University included,come from.
