Demographic Challenges in China
For population growth, the Government has increasingly emphasized population -control, especially the one-child family policy since 1979. However, China now is faced with a very rapid increase in its elderly population and the change of the entire population structure.
As people in abundance acknowledge, the aging of the population now is the biggest demographic challenges in china. With the continuation of the one-child policy and the improvement of the living standard, the rates of the birth and the death are becoming lower and lower since the beginning of the implementation of the policy, which contributes to the population status in contemporary society. The problems such as labor shortage and the issues of social welfare all are waiting to solve.
The other challenge is the change of the entire population structure. Now the model of population structure in China is a Inverted Pyramid which demonstrates the number of the old is much larger than the young. Now it is common that more and more family structures are characterized by one grandchild shared by four grandparents. That’s to say, one couple has to support four grandparents ,in addition ,who may live longer in the future, the cost may be excessive. Furthermore, the heavy family burden may create some inner-family conflicts and worsen inter-generation relations. As governments ,they need to build many nursing homes to place the old, but at the same time, lots of hoping school are wasted because of the lack of students, which are consequences of the demographic change.
Facing this population situation ,many experts hold the belief that the government should release the policy about the second baby to relive the circumstance, but this proposal is not implemented and it will be a long way to solve population challenges totally.。
