Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank Note李仕才一、阅读理解Vinegar makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even use it to clean your windows. And now, according to scientists, it may even the planet’s population survive climate change.Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive. "In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize—and the basic plant of breeding species, rapeseed(油菜籽)," Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.Kim also told the magazine he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners. Although at this point keeping thirsty plants alive isn’t as easy as just pouring vinegar over them, Kim said he and his team are working on making the process as simple as possible. "Now we are trying to cooperate with some farmers, and also some companies, to make a method to apply this system, "he said. And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when we go away, hopefully this means the end of returninghome from a trip to find our favorite flowers have died.1.What is the article mainly about?A. The world’s food supply will be increased.B. Plants better survive droughts.C. The Arabidopsis is resistant to droughts.D. Vinegar could be used to fight droughts.2.It was discovered that acetate can .A. be used by farmers to replace soilB. only be produced by the ArabidopsisC. help plants survive dry conditionsD. be used to improve poor soil3.What are the target plants of the experiment?A. all breeding species.B. wheat and Arabidopisis.C. rice and maize.D. rapeseed and Arabidopisis.4.Jong Myong Kim’s experiment of trying out the method .A. can make people’s trips pleasantB. turned out a worldwide successC. is as simple as pouring vinegar over the plantsD. appeals to many flower growing companies【文章大意】本文属于科普类文章。

This month, the singing competition, American Idol, will come to an end. For years, the popular show was a platform for rising artists. With a group of famous judges and a wide range of talents, it is clear that the competitive atmosphere of American Idol will remain unrivaled by any other show. After all, its success has been "unmatched in broadcasting history."American Idol came from the British series Pop Idol. Through an application, contestants came into the competition and thereafter, were chosen to audition(试音)for the show. Each candidate would have to perform a piece to the judges, and participate in a strict selection process. Not only would contestants have to sing in groups, they were sometimes tasked to perform pieces without musical instruments. At the end of this stage, only 24 o 36 artists were chosen to enter the semi-final stage. Soon, the fate of the contestants would be decided by the public. During the candidate’s live performance, a free telephone number was displayed on the screen for viewers to dial, to cast their vote. At the end of the night, only 13 lucky singers would be left in the competition; by the finals, only 8 contestants would remain. Finally, a runner-up(亚军)and a winner were announced every season. Though only the winner would receive a million dollar reward and a significant record deal, other contestants would have had a chance to be known by the public. As the famous producer Simon Cowell once said, "The point of the show is not to be mean to loser, but to find a winner." As the final season of the program begins, past winners will return to the stage to say goodbye and a new winner will be announced. With amazing performances and an excellent cast of singers, the show’s conclusion will leave audiences nostalgic(怀旧的), but more satisfied than ever.1. Those who enter American Idol will _______.A. share the one million dollar reward togetherB. be asked to perform in pairs in the semi-finalsC. experience at least three rounds of performancesD. have the chance to become famous even if they fail2. Career criminals begin their antisocial behavior during their toddler (学步的儿童) years and may go on with a life of crime if their behavior isn’t challenged, scientists have discovered. While most children grow out of their bad behavior by adulthood, a study found those who had “callous unemotional (冷漠无情的) characteristics” could grow up to have problems with the law later in life. Behavior characteristics such as a lack of sympathy and lying in childhood could have an impact years on.Luke Hyde, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, said, “These are signs for parents and doctors to watch out for, as they may signal more than just the terrible twos.” He said, “Parents both take care of the ir child and provide their child’s genes so it’s been difficult to know if we’re seeing that parenting causes callous unemotional behaviors, or if it is just a sign of the genes being passed to the child.”The research also discovered that strict parenting is linked to the development of antisocial behavior. Scientists looked at 561 families in an adoption study that examined biological mothers’ antisocial behavior. The scientists found children of antisocial mothers were also more likely to exhibit the same behavior characteristics, despite having limited or no touch with them as they were adopted as babies.“The really exciting take-home message from this study is that small, day-to-day positive interactions (互动) that parents have with their young children can make a huge difference in children’s development,’’ said Leslie Leve, a professor at the University of Oregon who co-led the data collection.“Even when children have inherited (遗传) a very challenging set of behaviors, hearing ‘good job’ or receiving encouragement can help protect them from developing serious problems coming from their inherited difficul ties,” he added. The study, worked on by scientists from the University of Michigan, Penn State University and theUniversity of Oregon has been published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Researchers will follow the group of children through early adolescence to determine if these behaviors still continue to exist from the toddler years.1.What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Kids’ social behaviors are related to crime.B. Criminals begin their crimes during adolescence.C. Antisocial behaviors of kids could be on their way to a life of crime.D. Warmhearted kids are more likely to be criminals in the future.2.What conclusion might the scientists draw from the study?A. Antisocial behaviors might be inherited.B. The genes decide kids’ antisocial b ehaviors.C. Antisocial behaviors have nothing to do with crimes.D. Adopted babies surely have antisocial behaviors when they grow up.3.What can be inferred from the passage?A. Parenting is the main reason that causes kids’ antisocial behaviors.B. What causes career criminals to begin their crimes is their parents’ characteristics.C. Leslie Leve has a doubtful attitude to adoptive mothers’ active interactions with kids.D. Inherited antisocial behaviors of kids can be lightened by positive parenting.4.Why will researchers track kids’ process of growing?A. To make sure if kids’ behaviors will last.B. To make sure if praise will change kids.C. To determine if kids’ behaviors will be inherited.D. To determine if parents’ comfort will protect kids.【文章大意】研究人员发现孩子的反社会行为有可能使他们走向犯罪的道路,积极的育儿方式可以减轻孩子的反社会行为。

Dear Mr.Shyamalan,According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie,Split,is doing gangbusters. That means millions of people all over the world have seen or will soon see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID).As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist,Mr.Shyamalan, personally,I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities,as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject,I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts:People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse. In truth,we are victims of unimaginable violence. With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃强凌弱者).I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in Split.Your description of Kevin Crumb as one more gender confused, crossdressing multiple with a liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground,“People with DID are dangerous nut jobs!”I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours.Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse,I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(诊断).For no matter how long I've known someone or how highly they think of me,once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable. In the future,I'd appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment.Michelle Stevens1.What does the author think of Shyamalan's success?A.His efforts paid off.B.He deserved it.C.He was very fortunate.D.He got it in an immoral way.2.What's the probable cause of DID?A.Alcohol abuse of parents.B.Ill treatment in childhood.C.Tense relations among people.D.Extreme anxiety from life.3.Who is Kevin Crumb according to the text?A.A friend of Mr.Shyamalan's.B.A character in Split.C.A patient of Michelle Stevens'.D.A psychologist with multiple personalities.4.What's the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To give the movie Split a review.B.To show respect for people with DID.C.To state that the movie Split hurt people with DID.D.To argue that people with DID can also make a difference.【解题导语】本文是一封书信。
