Sentences Simple, Compound, and Complex

This page contains definitions of simple, compound, and complex sentences with many simple examples. The purpose of these examples is to help the ESL/EFL learner to identify sentence basics including identification of sentences in the short quizzes that follow. After that, it will be possible to analyze more complex sentences varieties.
A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.
B. Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.
C. Alejandro played football, for Maria went shopping.
D. The town where I grew up is in the United States.
Adjective Clauses are studied in this site separately, but for now it is important to know that sentences containing adjective clauses are complex.
COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the coordinators and the commas that precede them are in red.

有八种基本类型：(1)主谓：主语＋谓语(2)主系表：主语＋连系动词＋表语(3)主谓宾：主语＋谓语＋宾语(4)主谓宾宾：主语＋谓语＋间接宾语＋直接宾语(5)主谓宾补：主语＋谓语＋宾语＋宾语补足语(6)主谓状：主语＋谓语＋状语(7)主谓宾状：主语＋谓语＋宾语＋状语(8)存现句：表示事物存在、出现、消失的句式。

2．并列句由两个或两个以上不分主次、相互独立的简单句构成的句子叫并列句。

并列句通过并列连词、连接副词和分号三种方式连接起来。

常见的并列连词：(1)and表示平行、顺接、递进等He was cleaning the room and his children were playing outside.他在打扫房间，他的孩子们在外面玩耍。

(2)but表示转折(但是，然而)His son came back，but he was still concerned.他儿子回来了，但是他仍然很担心。

(3)for表示原因或理由It must have rained yesterday evening，for the ground is wet.昨晚准是下雨了，因为地面是湿的。

(4)so表示结果(所以)The manager was ill so I went to the press conference in his place.经理病了所以我代他去参加发布会。

A compound sentence is made up of two or more simple sentences joined by one of the following:
Dependent clause
Because we are a family, I love you, and you love me.
2 independent clauses
A dependent clause added to two or more independent clauses

I have loved you for years ; although I never admitted it. No! I have loved you for years, although I never admitted it. OK

Dependent clauses, like babies, cannot stand alone.
A Tip on Punctuation

Since dependent clauses are only part of a sentence, you can never connect them to another sentence with a semicolon. Semicolons are only used between two independent clauses.

Compound-Complex Sentences
A compound-complex sentence has one complex sentence joined to a simple sentence with a conjunction. Example: While Tom reads novels, Jack reads comics, but Sam only reads magazines.

㈠主语（subject）

compound & complex sentences

Simple sentence是简单句，就是只有主谓宾的很简单的结构。

Compound sentence是并列句，就是有多个并列的主谓结构的,而且这些结构是地位等同的，也就是没有从属关系，就像你举的例子。

Complex sentence 是复合句，它有多套主谓结构，但是这些结构之间有从属关系，比如有主句和从句之分的。

Compound-complex sentence是并列复合句，就是既有compound sentence,u又有complex sentence的句子。

2) 并列句（Compound Sentence）并列句有两个或两个以上的主谓结构。

这些主谓结构之间的关系是并列的、对等的。

从语法上讲，所谓"并列"、"对等"是指任何一个主谓结构都能独立地表达意思，谁也不从属于谁。

尽管如此，这些主谓结构在意思或逻辑上有一定程度的内在联系。

否则，它们就可能被分别写成简单句，而没有必要写在一起构成并列句了。

在并列句中，要使两个或几个主谓结构（或者说，分句）连接在一起，就要用并列连词。

并列连词用来连接平行对等（即互不从属）的分句。

按其表示的不同意思有下面几种：A. 表示转折意思: but , yet , however , nevertheless例：Everything in the world is outside you but health belongs to yourself .一切都是身外之物，只用健康属于自己。

He has learned English for only one year, yet he can communicate with people in English . 他才学一年英文，但已能用英文与人交往了。

John has his shortcomings; however, that doesn't mean he is not qualified for the job . 约翰有缺点，但这不等于说他不胜任这份工作。
