Unit5 What were you doing when the

rainstorm happened?

Section B 2a-2

Section 1 Analysis of the teaching material

The selected teaching material is an article taken from Unit 5, 8B,

Go for it. The title is Do You Remember What You Were Doing? It is

about what people were doing when the big event happened. The article

has mentioned two big events -- Martin Luther King was killed and The

September 11th. These events are unfamiliar to the most students and

there are many sentences used past progressive tense. So it is a kind of

difficult for the students.

Section 2 Identifying the teaching aims

Based on the analysis of the teaching material, I have chosen the

following as the teaching aims of my lesson:

The 1st aim: Students learn the skills and strategies to read an

article.

The 2nd aim: Students get a better understanding of the article.

The 3rd aim: Students get a morality education from the article.

Section 3 Teaching Method

Task-Based Teaching

Section 4 Teaching procedures Part 1 Reviewing

The target language of this unit is to master the past progressive

tense. I start my lesson by asking students what they were doing when the

small earthquake happened. This topic can make students review the past

progressive tense and prepare for the new class.

Part 2 Knowing the background

After reviewing, let the students listen to a speech which is named I

Have A Dream and show them a video which is about The September

11th. This part will help the students to know some background about

these two big events and help them to learn the article better.

Part 3 Learning reading strategies

Let the students predict what the article is about by just reading the

title. This is a very useful reading strategy for the students. That is --The

title can give the students some important information. Then let the

students read the article as quickly as they can and find out the topic

sentence. And teach them the other useful reading strategy -- The first

sentence of a passage or each paragraph is usually the topic sentence.

Part 4 Reading for details

After teaching two important reading strategies, let the students

finish 2c and correct the mistakes if they think the statement is false.

Part 5 Reading intensively

After finishing 2c, the students had a general idea of the passage.

Then let them take a closer look at each event. Let the students read

paragraph 2 and 4 intensively and answer some questions. These

questions can help them understand the two events better. Part 6 Retelling the passage

After learning the whole passage, ask students to retell the article by

giving them some tips.

Part 7 Morality education

This part is very meaningful for the students. Let the students think

about the important events in the school after learning the two big events

in the history. The answers of the students are different. Some are

wonderful and some are terrible. One of the terrible event in the school is

being bullied. let the students discuss how to protect themselves when

they are bullied. And teach them nothing is important than human life.
