AHe went to church, watched the people, gave children money for sweets, and discovered that he had never been so happy in his life. In the afternoon he went to his nephew's house. He passed the door several times before he was brave enough to knock. But at last he did it, and was taken into the sitting room, where Fred and his pretty wife were waiting for their friends to arrive for dinner.“Fred!” said Scrooge.“It's your uncle Scrooge. I've come to dinner. Will you let me stay, Fred?”Fred almost shook his uncle's arm off. Scrooge felt at home in five minutes. Nothing could be merrier. And what a wonderful dinner they had!But he was early at the office next morning. Oh, he was there early. He wanted to catch Bob Cratchit arriving late. And he did! He was eighteen and a half minutes late when he finally hurried in. Scrooge was sitting with his office door open.“Hello!” said Scrooge in his old and hard voice. “What do you mean by coming here so late?”“I'm very sorry, sir,” said Bob.“I am late. It's only once a year. We were rather merry yesterday, sir.”“Now I'll tell you that, my friend,” said Scrooge, “I'm not going to have this any longer. And so,” he continued, jumping off his chair and shaking Bob's hand,“I'm going to pay you twice as much!”Bob's face went white. For a second or two he thought that Scrooge had gone crazy.“Merry Christmas, Bob!” said Scrooge, and it was clear that he meant it.Scrooge did everything that he had promised. Some people laughed to see the change in him, but he did not care. His own heart laughed inside him, and that was good enough for him.语篇解读:本文摘自查尔斯·狄更斯的《圣诞颂歌》。

The president was meeting the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin for the first time, morethan a decade after the book’s publication in 1852.“It was not simply a patronizing(傲慢的)remark.” Harriet Beecher Stowe really was small. “I am a little bit of a woman,” she described herself, “about as thin and dry as a pinch of snuff.”If Uncle Tom’s Cabin did not quite start a war, it ignited the minds of people North and South, both for and against abolition. Tens of thousands of Americans who had not read the book already knew Simon Legree as the classic slave driver and Uncle Tom the black victim.Harriet Beecher Stowe was a well-known writer before Uncle Tom’s Cabin made her rich and famous. For a time, she and her preacher husband Calvin Stowe were too poor to afford a servant. Mrs Stowe ran her house, cared for her twin daughters(the first two of seven children),churned out genteel, folksy stories and religious essays to help make ends meet.Uncle Tom’s Cabin changed all that. It was the first great American best-seller. In the initial year in print, it sold 300,000 copies, and eventually more than 3 million American readers bought the book. Worldwide, sales ran to something like 10 million in 40 languages. In this plain but informative portrait, biographer Gerson notes that author Stowe never visited the deep South before the Civil War. Most of the knowledge of slavery was gained from former slaves whom she met while living in Cincinnati(one of the busiest stops on the Underground Railway), though she did visit a working plantation in Kentucky briefly in 1833.In spite of the impact on the world of her celebrated novel it turns out that except for the issue of slavery, she had a scant interest in politics.43. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used. This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxfor d.Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane.Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.46. [范文]Of all my teachers, Mrs.Mary is the one who impresses me most. Though she is 44, she looks very young for her age. And she's one of the most popular teachers in our school.Compared with other teachers, Mrs.Mary pays more attention to her way of teaching. She tries various ways to make her classes lively and interesting. In the opinion of her, we should not only know “what”,but also understand “why”. So, instead of giving us answers immediately, she encourages us to think by ourselves whenever she puts forward questions. With her help, we've learned how to analyze and settle problems. Some children may e v en feel guilty thinking that they someho w caused the disaster through their bad beha v ior. Because of P2such common reactions, parents and others should begin as soon after the event as possible helping these children. Some suggestions include talking to the children about what happened, letting the children express their own feelings, spendingextra time with them doing activities together and reassuring W2 them that you love them and won't leave them. For some children expressing themselves through drawing pictures or writing can be useful. Do everything possible to help children get back to a normal routine; however, don't be afraid to P3“spoil” these children for a w hile P4after the disaster. Let them have extra pri v ileges W3and more attention than usual. Encourage the children to grie v e W4 after a loss. It should be OK for them to cry.
