Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows”.After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire h ose(消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the wornout bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a tenfoot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.20. 【快乐考生】2015届高考英语一轮总复习 Unit 4 Sharing课时作业新人教版选修7Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2013·江西卷)Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite.Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work.It is because they do not realize this,or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else.An essential part of listening well is the rule known as“bracketing”.Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires,to experience as far as possible someone else's world from the inside,stepping_into_his_or_her_shoes.Moreover,since listening well involves bracketing,it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person.Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener.True communication is under way.The energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth. Most of the time we lack this energy.Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively.Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder,as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us.Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening,or we simply refuse to listen to what we don't want to hear.It wasn't until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic (有疗效的).In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of the psychotherapy(心理疗法),before any of the roots of problems had been un covered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them,I believe, was the patient's sense that he or she was being truly listened to,often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.[文章大意]本文是一篇说明文。

Without proper diet and exercise kids are at risk of developing fragile bones when they get older. That’s because our bodies are very good at building bones until about the age of 30, when the process stops.Dr. Lawrence Raisz, scientific editor of The 2004 Surgeon General’s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis(骨质疏松症), agrees. “We’re in bad shape, ”he says. His report predicts that by 2020, half of all Americans over the age of 50 will be at risk of fractures(骨折)because of low bone mass. “Kids today are—what’s the expression? —they’re computer potato es. They have lots of soft drinks and not enough good calcium-rich(富含钙质的)food. ”And there in(在其中)lies the problem, because calcium and exercise, along with vitamin D, are the important components for building up strong bones. If you think of your body as a house, then your skeleton(骨架)is the supporting frame—a frame maintained and strengthened by calcium. Once we hit our 30s, our bodies start to draw from the calcium stored in our bones. If there is enough calcium, then the structure will stand firm, but i f there’s not? Picture the frame of a house devoured(吞噬)by termites(白蚁), the wood brittle(易折的)and filled with holes”. 课时提升作业(三十四)选修7Unit 4Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2014·吉安模拟) Clothes can make phone calls, play music, dialyour pal’s number, keep you warm during cold weatherand operate your computer. This is not a fantasy. A British company, calledElectrotextiles, has created a wide range ofclothes—clothes that have minds of their own!Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind of fabric that can be blended(混合)with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The result is electronic garments. If you think the wearer has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes are wire-free, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic device, these high-tech clothes have to be powered. Currently, a tiny nine-volt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near future the clothes will generate electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100 percent shock proof, they say.The Electrotextile s team has also created the world’s first cloth keyboard. Thiskeyboard can be sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These“lap-tap”gadgets(器具)are all set to take over laptop computers!Another useful garment is the shirt-cum-mobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wear includes the denim(牛仔布)jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hood(风帽)and the electronic ski jacket with a built-in heater. The ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project—a necktie that can be used as a computer mouse. What is the next? Do you have any idea?【文章大意】本文是一篇科技说明文。

B(2014·绍兴统考)When people first walked across the BeringLand Bridge thousands of years ago, dogs wereby their sides, according to a study published inthe journal Science.Robert Wayne of the University ofCalifornia, Los Angeles, and Jennifer Leonard of the Smithsonian Institute, used DNA material—some of it unearthed by miners in Alaska—to conclude that today’s domestic dog originated in Asia and accompanied the first humans to the New World about 10, 000 to 15, 000 years ago. Wayne suggests that man’s best friend may have enabled the tough journey from Asia into North America. “Dogs may have been the reason people made it across the land bridge, ”said Wayne. “T hey can pull things, carry things, defend you from fierce animals, and they’re useful to eat. ”Researchers have agreed that today’s dog is the result of the domestication(驯化)of wolves thousands of years ago. Before this recent study, a common thought abou t the precise origin of North America’s domestic dog was that Natives domesticated local wolves, the descendants(后代)of which now live with people in Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48.Dog remains from a Fairbanks-area gold mine helped the scientists reach their conclusion. Leonard, an evolutionary biologist, collected DNA from 11 bones of ancient dogs that were locked in permafrost(永冻层)until Fairbanks miners uncovered them in the 1920s. The miners donated the preserved bones to theAmerican Museum of Natural History in New York City, where they remained untouched for more than 70 years. After borrowing the bones from the museum, Leonard and her colleagues used radiocarbon techniques to find the age of the Alaska dogs. They found the dogs all lived between the years of 1450 and 1675 A. D. , before Vitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov who were the first known Europeans to view Alaska in 1741. “The bones of dogs that wandered the Fairbanks area centuries ago should therefore be the remains of pure native American d ogs, ”Leonard said. The DNA of the Fairbanks dogs would also expose whether they were the descendants of wolves from North America.Along with the Fairbanks samples, the researchers collected DNA from bones of 37 dog specimens(标本)from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia that existed before the arrival of Columbus. In the case of both the Alaska dogs and the dogs from Latin America, the researchers found that they shared the most genetic material with gray wolves of Europe and Asia. This supports the idea of domestic dogs entering the New World with the first human explorers who wandered east over the land bridge.Leonard and Wayne’s study suggests that dogs joined the first humans that made the adventure across the Bering Land Bridge to slowly populate the Americas. Wayne thinks the dogs that made the trip must have provided some excellent service to their human companions or they would not have been brought along. “Dogs must have been useful because they were expensive to keep, ”Wayne said. “They didn’t feed on mice; they fed on meat, which was a very guarded resource. ”【文章大意】本文是科普性文章。
