The Ant Lion, A Very Interesting Creature蚁狮—非常有趣的动物蚁狮是一种非常有趣的动物,但可能并不常见。
If you are out walking in the countryside, and you happen to come across an area of dry, sandy soil, you may find some small holes in the ground, shaped like an upside-down cone, perfectly round at the top and tapering down to a point. If you then get a piece of grass, and gently touch the side of this hole, making a few grains of sand fall to the bottom, and a little creature may finally appear, looking for a meal. The creature is called an ant lion, and the hole or pit is the method it uses to catch its food. The ant lion is actually the wormlike young of an insect. It digs its pit by crawling backwards in a small circle. It uses one of its front legs to pile sand up on its head, and then twists its head quickly, throwing the sand out of the pit. Round and round it goes, in smaller and smaller circles, throwing out the sand, until it has created a pit of about 5 centimeter in diameter at the top, and 3 or 4 centimeters deep. Next it buries itself at the bottom, with just its strong jaws showing. Then it sits and waits with great patience. Finally, an ant or another small insect will come by, and step into the pit. If it falls to the bottom, the ant lion will seize it in its jaws, and eat it. But if the ant tries to climb up the side of the pit, the falling sand will warn the ant lion at the bottom, and it will throw up sand with its head, causing a small fall of sand which will make the ant fall back down again, to its death. Comprehension Questions:1. The purpose of touching the ant lion’s hole with a piece of grass is to______.A. try to catch an ant lionB. see how it catches insectsC. give the ant lion some foodD. make it bury itself in the sand2. According to the information given in the passage, the ant lion is a kind of ______.A. antB. lionC. insectD. locust(BCADB)22. The Sea Horse Is Not A Horse海马不是马海马不是马,而是一种特殊的鱼类。
Unit 4 Wildlife protection Period 4 Using Language课后阅读训练Ⅰ. ALast month, when we were exploring in Costa Rica and Nicaragua,I had a chance to deal with a lot of strange and funny animals. None were more funny than Caplin,a capybara(水豚).I bet you are thinking Eww!A giant rat! Actually,it is about the size of a large dog and looks kind of like a pig. The capybara is a native to South America. Capybaras can weigh up to 150 pounds; they have pig-like faces and are covered in brown fur. They are always near the water because they love to eat the grass and other plants that grow by the water. Their name actually means “master of the grass”. Capybaras even sleep in the water. They are able to do this without drowning, because their ears, eyes, and nose are on top of their head so they can hear, see,and breathe while swimming.Caplin was the luckiest capybara ever!He had his own pond and swimming pool and even his own toilet!Plus he got little treats like strawberry yogurt.I think Caplin was so funny because he was a rodent(啮齿目动物),yet he acted like he was part dog and part pig.He would roll around in the mud, then shake his body like a dog and spray(喷出)brown dots on everyone! Sometimes he would walk right up to me and start poking(拨弄)me with his paw, until I gave him a dried cherry treat. That is what my dogs do to me when they want a dog treat. My show takes me on many science adventures to a lot of crazy places and judging by how it’s going now, the adventures will only get crazier. Who knows what could be the next; I may meet other unusual creatures! You don’t have to travel to different countries to explore or find an adventure; you can find amazing stuff in your own neighborhood.【语篇概述】本文作者根据自己的经历介绍了水豚的长相、生活习性以及一只叫Caplin的水豚的可爱之处等。

Unit 4 Wildlife protection Period 1 Warming Up & Reading课后阅读训练Ⅰ. AWhat do the following animals have in common? Pandas, rhinoceros, Mexican burrowing snakes, pink pigeons and small tooth sawfish. They are all endangered animals! Animals become endangered for a variety of reasons. Sadly, humans are behind every one of them! For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks, and killed tigers for their beautiful furs, caught fish for food. While we still have elephants, tigers, and fish in the wild, we cannot say the same about many others that have simply died out!Year 1505 was a dreadful turning point in the natural history of the island of Mauritius—European sailors discovered this beautiful island in the Indian Ocean and brought dogs, pigs, monkeys with them. The arrival of humans and those introduced animal species were bad news for dodo birds. About 50 pounds and flightless, dodo birds did not have any natural enemies until then. They picked fruits fallen from trees and built their nests on the ground. Shortly after humans set foot on Mauritius, however, dodo birds realized that they were in big trouble—men killed them for their meat, and those introduced animal species destroyed their nests and ate their eggs. The effects of excessive(过度的)hunting and foreign species drove dodo birds to first become much fewer and then die out. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681.Humans and animals have always competed for land and other natural resources. We clear an area of a forest for farming. We cut down trees and use wood to build beautiful houses. We build reservoirs(水库)to make sure that we have enough water to use. At the same time that we are trying to make our life comfortable, we destroy the habitats of wild animals.More than once we have seen on television that rescue workers are trying their best to save seabirds in spilled(泄漏的)oil. More than once we have heard about how emissions of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳的排放)and other gases have raised the Earth temperature and caused global warming. Pollution has a serious and long-lasting effect. If we choose to do nothing and continue to pollute our planet Earth, our next generations will have to face an Earth without birds singing and beasts roaring.【语篇概述】本文主要介绍了导致许多动物灭绝的原因, 我们人类应该保护野生动物, 保护地球。
Our body clock,or natural body rhythm, influences our energy and alertness.Paying attention to it can help us choose the suitable time of day when we best perform specific tasks. The reality, however,is that most of us organize their time around work demands, school deadlines, muting or social events.Doing whatever your body feels like doing is a luxury in today's fast-paced modem society. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying.Obeying our body clock has significant health benefits.Disrupting our natural body rhythm,on the other hand, has been linked to problems such as depression, obesity,or headache, says Steve Key,a biology professor. When the body clock can synchronize(使……同步)the rhythms of its natural processes,it “gives us an advantage in daily life”,says Key.According to him, when it es to cognitive(认知的)work, most adults perform best in the late morning. As our body temperature starts to rise just before awakening in the morning and continues to increase until midday, our memory, alertness and concentration gradually improve. However,he adds, our ability to concentrate typically starts to decrease soon thereafter. Most of us are more easily distracted(分心)between noon and 4 pm.Alertness also tends to fall after eating a meal and sleepiness tends to peak around 2 pm,making that a good time for a nap.Surprisingly, tiredness may increase our creative powers. For most adults, problems that require open ended thinking are often best dealt with in the evening when they are tired, according to a study in the journal Thinking & Reasoning. When choosing a time of day to exercise, paying attention to your body clock can improve results.Physical performance is usually best from about 3 to 6 pm,says Michael Smolensky,a professor of biomedical engineering.Of course, not everyone's body clock is the same, making it even harder to synchronize natural rhythms with daily plans.1.If we know our natural body rhythm well, we can .A.find out the suitable time to do specific tasksB.organize our time around work demandsC.do whatever our body feels like doingD.be sure to be healthy2.Which of the following is NOT true?A.Our alertness is influenced by our natural body rhythmB.Doing whatever your body feels like is very difficult in our modem society.C.Obeying our body clock is good for our health.D.Disrupting our natural body rhythm can lead to obesity.3.According to Steve Key,which of the following is NOT true?A.When our body clock synchronizes the rhythms of its natural processes,we can do better.B.When it es to cognitive(认知的)work, most people perform best in the late morning.C.As body temperature rises before awakening in the morning, our concentration gradually improves.D.We concentrate better in the late morning than between noon and 4 pm.4.Inspiration(灵感)to solve a difficult problem will most probably e to us .A.when we get up in the morningB.when we are tired in the eveningC.when we are full of energy in the late morningD.when we are asleep at night5.Which of the following can be the suitable title for the passage?A.What is natural body rhythm?B.Natural body rhythm is good for us.C.Something about natural body rhythm.D.The latest research about natural body rhythm.【参考答案】1---5 ADBBC阅读理解。
2019-2020年高中英语Unit4Wildlifeprotection练习题新人教版必修阅读理解A typical lion tamer(驯兽师) in people's mind is an entertainer holding a whip(鞭) and a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it's mostly for show. In reality, it's the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion's face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion bees confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve(e.g. lose weight, start a business, travel more)-only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can't focus or that we're focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving. It doesn't have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to acplish, someone you want to bee...take immediate action. If you're clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.1. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?A. To trick the lion.B. To show off his skills.C. To get ready for a fight.D. To entertain the audience.2. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?A. They feel puzzled over choices.B. They hold on to the wrong things.C. They find it hard to make changes.D. They have to do something for show.3. What is the author's attitude towards the experts mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. Tolerant.B. Doubtful.C. Respectful.D. Supportive.4. When the world is "waving a chair in your face", you're advised to ________.A. wait for a better chanceB. break your old habitsC. make a quick decisionD. ask for clear guidance正确答案:A A B C温馨提示:最好仔细阅读后才下载使用,万分感谢!。

Unit 4 Wildlife protection五年高考练阅读理解A(2021全国甲,B,)Port Lympne Reserve, which runs a breeding(繁育)programme, has welcomed the arrival of a rare black rhino calf(犀牛幼崽). When the tiny creature arrived on January 31, she became the 40th black rhino to be born at the reserve. And officials at Port Lympne were delighted with the new arrival, especially as black rhinos are known for being difficult to breed in captivity(圈养).Paul Beer, hea d of rhino section at Port Lympne, said:“Obviously we're all absolutely delighted to welcome another calf to our black rhino family. She's healthy, strong and already eager to play and explore. Her mother, Solio, is a first-time mum and she is doing a fantastic job. It's still a little too cold for them to go out into the open, but as soon as the weather warms up, I have no doubt that the little one will be out and about exploring and playing every day.”The adorable female calf is the second black rhino born this year at the reserve, but it is too early to tell if the calves will make good candidates to be returned to protected areas of the wild. The first rhino to be born at Port Lympne arrived on January 5 to first-time mother Kisima and weighed about 32kg. His mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all born at the reserve and still live there.According to the World Wildlife Fund, the global black rhino population has dropped as low as 5500, giving the rhinos a “critically endangered” status. 1.Which of the following best describes the breeding programme?A.Costly.B.Controversial.C.Ambitious.D.Successful.2.What does Paul Beer say about the new-born rhino?A.She loves staying with her mother.B.She dislikes outdoor activities.C.She is in good condition.D.She is sensitive to heat.3.What similar experience do Solio and Kisima have?A.They had their first born in January.B.They enjoyed exploring new places.C.They lived with their grandmothers.D.They were brought to the reserve young.4.What can be inferred about Port Lympne Reserve?A.The rhino section will be open to the public.B.It aims to control the number of the animals.C.It will continue to work with the World Wildlife Fund.D.Some of its rhinos may be sent to the protected wild areas.B(2020全国Ⅱ,C,)When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn't cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion(时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur mad e into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur—unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year,”says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can't handle this non-native species(物种). It's destroying the environment. It's them or us,”says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field. The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s, the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it's not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton's job these days is trying to promote fur. Then there's Righteous Fur and its unusual fashions. Model Paige Morgan says, “To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them—I think that's going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.”Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She's trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly. 5.What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn?A.To promote guilt-free fur.B.To expand the fashion market.C.To introduce a new brand.D.To celebrate a winter holiday.6.Why are scientists concerned about nutria?A.Nutria damage the ecosystem seriously.B.Nutria are an endangered species.C.Nutria hurt local cat-sized animals.D.Nutria are illegally hunted.7.What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Boomed.B.Became mature.C.Remained stable.D.Crashed.8.What can we infer about wearing fur in New York according to Morgan?A.It's formal.B.It's risky.C.It's harmful.D.It's traditional.C(2019天津,C,)How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats. With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction(灭绝)of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点), it is remarkably difficult for them to return. 笔记2.consist of由…… 9.What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs?A.The living habits of species in food webs.B.The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.C.The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.D.The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.10.A strong link is found between two species when a predator .A.has a wide food choiceB.can easily find new preyC.sticks to one prey speciesD.can quickly move to another place11.What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline?A.The prey species they directly attack will die out.B.The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.C.The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.D.The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.12.What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4?A.Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems.B.Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats.C.Species of commercial value dominate other species.D.Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.13.How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance?A.By getting illegal practices under control.B.By stopping us from killing large predators.C.By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.D.By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.
