Literature Review on A Service of Love赵贵友(2011312815)After reading this short novel, I will represent my literature review on A Service of Love with following sides:1.General comment2.Structure analysisnguage analysis4.Features analysis5.SummaryGeneral comment:This short novel is mainly about sweat love between a couple, Joe (hero of novel) ,and Delia (heroine). The whole story describes the whole course of two leading characters, from they meet ,love deeply each other and all happens. At first, Joe and Delia were both passionate about art. When life became arduous, they both chose to give up their original dreams for the sake of each other. It is love that makes them sacrifice their own pursuits for each other. Although this kind of love involves cheats, white lies are just ornaments of life. This kind of love can be called true love, and it is more powerful than those tinsel loves. Structure analysis:At first, the author gave his conclusion , or the mine thesis: when one loves one’s art no serv ice seems too hard. And this sentence hasappeared four times , it is a good structure for this novel ,and emphasis the importance of theme of this novel ,When one loves one's Art no service seems too hard. Second part mainly described the leading characters from different sides. Joe (hero of novel) ,and Delia (heroine). including appearance , where they come from, what do the place look like , among these, their arts were described in detail .the author described them with two paraphes. And then described they meet with one paragraph ,they became enamoured one of the other, or each of the other, as you please, and in a short time were married--for (see above) fall in love with each other .They were mighty happy as long as their money lasted. So is every-- but I will not be cynical. Their aims were very clear and defined. Joe was to become capable very soon of turning out pictures that old gentlemen with thin side-whiskers and thick pocketbooks would sandbag one another in his studio for the privilege of buying. Delia was to become familiar and then contemptuous with Music, so that when she saw the orchestra seats and boxes unsold she could have sore throat and lobster in a private dining-room and refuse to go on the stage. And then life change, they both chose to give up their original dreams for the sake of each other. Then secrets revealed. At last, put an end to happiness and laugh. Among this courses ,with four times :‘when one loves one’s art no service seems too hard ’.Language analysis:The whole short novel with dialogues, colloquial language, or spoken language. For example: "That's all right for you, Dele," said Joe, "All right," said Joe, reaching for the blue scalloped vegetable dish. "But I hate for you to be giving lessons. It isn't Art. But you're a trump and a dear to do it."The dialogue happened between Joe (hero of novel) and Delia (heroine), the language is easily understand, common and popular. Narrative writing style, description writing style. With humorous style.Features analysisContrast description , all this novel describe characters ,events and changes as this order . for example, Joe Larrabee came out of the post-oak flats of the Middle West pulsing with a genius for pictorial art. At six he drew a picture of the town pump with a prominent citizen passing it hastily.Dialogues, colloquial language, or spoken language. this kind of writing is mine stream of this whole novel.Narrative and dialogue , both of these writing styles were applied in this novel. This effort was framed and hung in the drug store window by the side of the ear of corn with an uneven number of rows. At twenty he left for New York with a flowing necktie and a capital tied up somewhatcloser. Delia Caruthers did things in six octaves so promisingly in a pine- tree village in the South that her relatives chipped in enough in her chip hat for her to go "North" and "finish." They could not see her f--, but that is our story. And "Joe, dear," she said, gleefully, "I've a pupil. And, oh, the loveliest people! General--General A. B. Pinkney's daughter--on Seventy-first street. Such a splendid house, Joe--you ought to see the front door! Byzantine I think you would call it. And inside! Oh, Joe, I never saw anything like it before."My pupil is his daughter Clementina. I dearly love her already. She's a delicate thing-dresses always in white; and the sweetest, simplest manners! Only eighteen years old. I'm to give three lessons a week; and, just think, Joe! $5 a lesson. I don't mind it a bit; for when I get two or three more pupils I can resume my lessons with Herr Rosenstock. Now, smooth out that wrinkle between your brows, dear, and let's have a nice supper."Joe (hero of novel) came out of the post-oak flats , At six he drew a picture of the town pump and Delia (heroine) did things in six octaves so promisingly in a pine- tree village, they also are very kind, and outgoing.SummaryA Service of Love tells about a story of a young couple who pursue art. Joe dreamed about painting while Delia had a gift for music. They both came to New York and met in a studio. Before long they got married. They had only a small flat to live in, but they were happy. Everything wasfine until one day they found that they had spent all their money. So Delia decided to give music lessons while Joe sketched in Central Park and sold some of his pictures. Every day they parted in the morning and met in the evening. Two weeks later, Delia came home with her right hand in a bandage. Then, the fact made clear. Actually, Delia got a place in a laundry ironing shirts and Joe worked in tile engine-room of the same laundry where she worked. Both of them told white lies.。
