1“Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it’s a girl.”Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different answer from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child,it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this remobilization process. Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature focused on the role of a father. It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require complete transformation in daily routine and highly innovative adaptation; on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing number of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.1. According to the author, being a father______.A. brings a feeling of excitement to some menB. has a different meaning for those who have daughtersC. makes some men feel proud and others uneasyD. means nothing but more responsibilities2. It is stated in the passage that______.A. some parents are not prepared to have a childB. young couples do not like children at allC. working couples do not have much time to take care of their childrenD. many parents look forward to having a boy as their first child3. The transition to the mother’s role requires that the wife______.A. change her lifestyle in a highly innovative wayB. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situationC. stay at home to take care of the babyD. help her husband in his remobilization process4. Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, ______.A. have to shoulder more burdensB. have to make more difficult adaptationsC. have an easier job to doD. can usually do a better job【参考答案】32.CABC2Being the head of a high school for many years, I grew tired of budget meetings, funding cuts, and many other administrative chores (杂务). I started to dream of retirement. Sitting in traffic on a weekday morning, I would find my mind wandering, I would imagine spending time with my grandchildren, quiet evenings with my wife, traveling, or rediscovering some great books. I told myself that I wouldn’t sign myself up for any committees, any classes, or anything requiring a schedule. My first day of retirement came at last!I cooked a great breakfast for my wife and me, leisurely read the paper, cleaned a bit of the house, and wrote a few letters to friends. On the second day, I cooked breakfast, read the paper . . . On the third day, . . . This is retirement? I tried to tell myself that it was just the transition(过渡), that those golden moments were right round the corner, and that I would enjoy them soon enough. But something was missing.A former colleague asked a favor. A group of students were going to Jamaica to work with children in the poorest neighborhoods. Would I interrupt my new found “happiness” and return to the students, just this once? One trip. That’s all. My bags were packed. The trip was very inspiring. I was moved not only by the poverty I saw but also by the sense of responsibility of the young people on the trip. When I returned home, I offered to work one day aweek with a local youth organization. The experience was so positive that I was soon volunteering nearly full-time, working with students across North America to assist them in their voluntary work. Now, it seems the tables have turned. Some days I am the teacher, other days I am the student. These young people have reawakened my commitment (责任感) to social justice issues by challenging me to learn more about the situation in the world today, where people are still poor and suffer because of greed, corruption and war. Most importantly, they have given me the opportunity to continue to participate in helping to find solutions. In return, I help them do their charitable projects overseas. I’ve gone from running one school to helping oversee the construction of schools in twenty-one countries!1. What did the writer expect to do after he retired?A. To stay away from busy schedules.B. To write some great books.C. To do some voluntary work.D. To plan for his future.2. Why did the writer decide to go to Jamaica?A. He missed his students in that country.B. My Retired Life.B. Being the Head of a High School.C. My Attitudes towards Life.D. An Experience of Being a V olunteer.4. What does the writer think of his retired life now?A. Disappointing.B. Troublesome.C. Promising.D. Meaningful.【参考答案】33.ADAD3Millions of British people have ditched the traditional ‘thank you’ and replaced it with the less formal ‘cheers’, according to a survey.Although the average person will say ‘thank you’ nearly 5,000 times a year, one in three are more likely to throw in a ‘cheers’ or ‘ta’ where it’s needed, rather than risk sounding old fashioned. One in 20 now say ‘nice one’ instead, while younger generations are more likely to offer a ‘cool’ than a ‘thank you’.‘Merci’, ‘fab’ and even ‘gracias’ were also listed as common phrases to use, as was ‘much appreciated’.One in twenty who took part in the survey of 2,000 people by the Food Network UK for Thank You Day, which is marked on November 24, 2011, said a formal ‘thank you’ was now not often needed in everyday conversation. More than one in ten adults said they regularly won’t say thank you if they are in a bad mood. Most people declared that saying thank you was something drilled into them by their parents. A huge 70 percent of those questioned will say thank you to a person’s face without even meaning it, while a fifth avoid saying it when they know they should — on at least two occasions every day.It seems our friends and family get the brunt (压力) of our bad manners with half admitting they’re not good at thanking those closest to them — many justifying (为……辩解) the lack of thanks because their family ‘already know I’m grateful’.When spoken words won’t do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people. A third will still send a handwritten thank-you note — but 45 percent admit it’s been more than six months since they bothered to send one.A quarter of British people say thank you with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake.It follows that 85 percent of people will be annoyed at not getting the gratitude (感激) they feel they should receive.56. Most of the people who took part in the survey say that they say “thank you” ________.A. when they are in good moodB. completely out of habitC. when they feel truly gratefulD. purely out of politeness57. The underlined word “ditched” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.A. abandonedB. usedC. sharedD. grasped58. It can be learned from the passage that _______.A. different ways of expressing gratitude are all fashionableB. people should avoid saying “thank you” nowadaysC. a thank-you note is still appreciated by most peopleD. people in a bad mood never say “thank you”59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Most people express their gratitude to others by buying food for them.B. About fifty percent of people try not to say thank you when they should.C. Most people may feel natural when they fail to receive others’ gratitude.D. Many people think it unnecessary to say thanks to their family members.4Two talented Sheffield High School pupils have just found out they’ve been shortlisted in the top five of their categories in the new national Ambition AXA Awards.Natalie Chan-Lam (Year 12) and Clare Rees-Zimmerman (Year 11) are both in the running to win a prize that will help them to achieve their ambition. The best speeches often take on a combination of all three of these components. However, before you can go about the writing of a great speech, it is important to set goals. Goals keep you, your speech and your audience focused. What a goal isIn the context of a speech, a goal is the purpose of the speech, and what it hopes to accomplish. For example, the goal of a eulogy (颂歌) might be to celebrate the life of a loved one. The goal of a speech at a political gathering would be to inform the crowd about the political position of a candidate and persuade them to vote and campaign for the candidate in question. Why a goal is importantWithout a goal, a speech is without direction. The goal informs the structure and content of the speech. For example, if a speech’s goal is to convince people that smoking is bad for them, thespeech will be structured with persuasive arguments to back up the goal. A speech with a goal of informing the audience will keep the information fair and factual.A goal is incredibly important to the speech’s ability to connect with an audience. If the speaker is unaware of the goal of the speech, the audience will likely be unaware as well. This severely reduces the effectiveness of the message.Aside from informing the audience of the content and structure, a speech’s goal drives the speaker to greater heights. If a speaker is asked to speak on a specific subject, but never establishes the goal, they won’t know where to start in the research, organizing and writing of the speech.___________________________________If you have been charged with (被委以) delivering a speech, establishing a goal can seem difficult at first. There are several things to take into consideration. First, think about who you will be speaking to. The demographic (人口统计) of your audience will likely determine whether you will be able to persuade them, or whether they will be able to sit through. Second, think about the topic its elf. If the topic is something controversial, it may worth your while to consider an informative approach to present both sides of the issue. Finally, consider your resources. A speech with an informative or persuasive goal usually requires a great deal of research, and sometimes takes more time to write.63. According to the passage, what three components does the best speech combine?A. Informing, delivering and entertaining.B. Informing, persuading and entertaining.C. Informing, writing and delivering.D. Informing, writing and persuading.64. The goal of a speech at a political gathering might be _______.A. to persuade the audience to vote for a candidateB. to celebrate the life of a person you admireC. to entertain the audience with humor and magicD. to persuade the audience to buy new products65. All the following indicate the importance of a speech goal EXCEPT that _______.A. a speech will lose its direction without a goalB. a speech goal can help keep the audience aware of the speechC. a speech goal can help the speaker know about the research, organizing and writingD. a speech goal makes it possible for the speaker to achieve whatever he wants in life66. Which of the following can be filled into the blank as the subtitle for the last paragraph?A. How to achieve a speech goalB. How to deliver a difficult speechC. What to consider to establish a goalD. What to consider to deliver a speech6Kepler 22b, a planet more like Earth than any yet discovered, has been identified as a potential future home for mankind.Kepler 22b contains both land and water and has temperatures which average around 22℃. It also contains the right atmosphere to potentially support life.It is, however, 600 light years from Earth. The planet, where a year lasts 290 days, was first spotted two years ago. However, NASA scientists using the agency’s Kepler space telescope have now concluded that it offers the best hope yet for future human habitation outside the Solar System. One of the key standards for a plan et to be habitable is that it remains roughly the right distance from its main star to be neither too cold nor too hot. This range of ideal temperatures is known to scientists as the “Goldilocks” zone, as the temperature is “just right” for life.Bill Borucki, Kepler principal investigator at NASA Ames Research Centre, said: “We have now got good planet confirmation with Kepler 22b. We are certain that it is in the habitable zone and if it has a surface it ought to have a nice temperature.”There are now three planets outside the system, known as exoplanets, which experts believe could potentially be colonised (建殖民地) by future generations. In May, French astronomers identified Gliese 581d, which is far closer at around 20 light years away. It is about six times the mass (质量) of Earth and is one of a family of at least six planets. In August, a team from Switzerland reported that another planet called HD 85512b and 36 light years away seemed to be habitable. The planet is in the constellation of Vela, measuring around 3.6 times the Earth’s mass. According to an online catalogue that indexes bodies outside our solar system, a total of 47exoplanets and exomoons are potential habitable candidates but not enough research has been done to be sure.67. Whether a planet is suitable for mankind to live on doesn’t depend on ________.A. whether there are proper temperaturesB. whether it is close enough to EarthC. whether there is atmosphere around itD. whether there is land and water on it68. In what way is Kepler 22b like Earth?A. Its mass.B. Its size.C. Its conditions.D. Its shape.69. It can be learnt from the passage that ________.A. Kepler 22b is closer to Earth than Gliese 581dB. Kepler 22b is most likely to be habitable of allC. Kepler 22b’s year lasts longer than the earth’sD. Kepler 22b’s mass is greater than HD 85512b’s70. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. the farther a planet is away from the earth, the more likely it is to be habitableB. the longer a year of a planet lasts, the farther it is away from the Solar SystemC. the smaller mass a planet has than the earth, the less possibly there is water on itD. the more potential habitable exoplanets are found, the more research we should do7Who hasn’t found themselves reaching for the closest food available when they’re tired and stressed? More and more research is proving that this isn’t all in our mind. Some foods really do lead to a change in our moods(心情).Carbohydrate(碳水化合物)for calmThis is how some people medicate themselves with food—by reaching for cookies or pasta(意大利面食)whenever they’re upset.Unfortunately,it doesn’t always work. You must eat a meal consisting of 100%carbohydrate,on an empty stomach,to obtain the serotonin(血清素)increase so that you have a good mood.To get the wished-For effect.you must not eat anything for four hours and then eat at least 30 grams of straight carbohydrate.Dry cereal(谷类食品),a piece of bread with jam,or a potato should do the trick.Protein(蛋白质)for powerOf course.sometimes we don’t need to be calm and sleepy.Sometimes we need a great deal of mental concentration,so this is when it’s important to mix protein and carbohydrate. The protein will prevent the tryptophan(色氨酸)from flooding your brain, and the rise in serotonin won’t occur. Why dessert makes us happyFat and sugar cause the brain to let go endorphins(内啡肽),which send pleasure signals throughout the body. This would be fine, except humans are not particularly good at stopping at one cookie or cake. You can also satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing fruit for dessert.Timing your meals for energyBlood sugar drops after four hours of going without food, causing a decrease in energy.Eating usually fixes this within 20 to 30 minutes, but don’t suppose that eating more will cause a faster increase in energy. When you eat has as much of an effect on your mood as what you eat. In the past years, Chinese people have made hard and determined efforts to realize the dream their ancestors had for thousands of years. After China’s first satellite into the Earth’s orbit in 1970 came four flights of unmanned Shenzhou missions from 1999 to 2002.The country carried out its first one-piloted space flight in 0ctober, 2003, making China the third country in the world to have independent human spaceflight ability after the Soviet Union and the United States. Then came another breakthrough oil October 12,2005,when Shenzhou 6, China’s’ second human spaceflight, was launched, with a crew of two astronauts. Fifry years after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world’s first man made satellite, China’s first circumlunar(绕月的)satellite Chang’e l took off on Oct.24,2007,which became another milestone in China’s space achievements after the. above-men-tioned manned flights. Chang’e l was expected to fulfill four scientific goals, one of which was to probe(探测)mineral elements on the moon, especially those not existent on the Earth. It’s said that the1unar regolith(月壤)is abundant in helium-3, a clean fuel that may support th e Earth’s energy demands for more than a century. Nearly 3 years later,Oct.1.2010 witnessed the blasting off of Chang’e 2.China’s 2nd unmanned lunar probe, marking another step forward in moon exploration. Let’s take a look at four of them.Italian beef sandwichKnown around the city simply as a “beef”, this giant sandwich piles thinly sliced roast beef and green peppers on brown French bread, which has roots in the Italian American community in 1938. Dozens of Italian beef joints now exist in Chicago area, including Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park and Plant-Based Italian Beefless Sandwich. The latter is popular among people who favor vegetable products.Italian subItalian subs exist all over the country with different names. Chicago’s version originates from Vincenzo Graziano’s first sandwich store in 1922, who came to Chicago in 1905 without any money. At J.P. Graziano, now managed by Graziano’s great-grandson Jim Graziano, the Italian sub features hot pork sausage, plus tomato, red wine vinegar, which adds a deeper, richer flavor.ReubenMade with roasted beef, Swiss cheese and salted vegetables, the Reuben was invented in the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925 and won the National Sandwich Idea Contest in 1956. At Manny’s, you can taste the classic Reuben served with the award-winning roasted beef, which is the restaurant’s signature.Chicago-style hot dogDating back to 1929, a Chicago Red Hot is made up of nine ingredients (原料). They include an all-beef frank, a steamed bread roll and a salad bar of toppings. As one of the city’s most popular spots for a Chicago dog, the family-owned roadside stand, Superdawg Drive-In, has served hot dogs since 1948. If you order a Chicago dog, the really critical detail is that you can’t see tomato source, which would ruin the perfect balance of the food.1.Among the four must-eat Chicago sandwiches, which one has the longest history? A.Italian beef sandwich.B.Italian sub.C.Reuben.D.Chicago-style hot dog.2.In which restaurant can you taste an award-winning sandwich?A.Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park.B.J.P. But, scientists asked, what about pet parrots? New research suggests that these chatty creatures may also benefit from virtually connecting with their peers. The idea for this study was not random: In the wild, parrots tend to live in large groups. But when kept in as pets, these social birds are often on their own. Feeling bored and lonely, they may develop psychological issues and can even turn to self-harming behaviours like pulling out their feathers. In the study, researchers wanted to see whether 18 pet parrots could learn to make and receive video calls when they needed to help reduce loneliness. In the initial stage, the birds learnt to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on a tablet screen to start a call to that bird. Calls would only work when caregivers were able to assist at both ends. In the second stage, the parrots could choose to call other birds at their own will by ringing the bell then selecting the bird they wanted to call. During a two-month study period, owners said they recorded 147 deliberate calls between birds.“We saw some really encouraging results from the study,” said researchers. The parrots seemed to grasp that they were truly engaging with other birds onscreen and their behaviour often mirrored what we would expect from real-life interactions between these types of birds. “She came alive during the calls,” one pet owner said about her bird, according to a Northeastern University statement. The team has previously designed similar technology such as DogPhone, which allowed pet dogs to shake a ball to communicate with their owner. “The animal Internet is already here—there are hundreds of products on the market that let pet owners interact with their animals remotely over the net, but their design is primarily focused on what humans want, not what their pets need,” Hirskyj-Douglas from the University of Glasgow added.4.Why did researchers want to teach parrots to make video calls?A.To assess the effects of video calls on animals.B.To train parrots’ communication skills.C.To help get pet parrots out of bad moods.D.To improve the relationships between parrots.5.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.The subjects of the experiment.B.The procedures of the experiment.C.Caregivers’ role in the experiment.D.The significance of the experiment.6.Why is a pet owner’s statement mentioned in the passage?A.To indicate video calls saved his parrot’s life.B.To show pet parrots like video calls very much.C.To show pet owners are satisfied with the study.D.To illustrate the study produced positive results.7.What is the difference between this study and previous ones?A.It uses the Internet technology.B.It enhances human-animal interaction. C.It satisfies pet owners’ needs.D.It focuses on animals’ needs.Benedict Morelli, one of New York’s top-rated lawyers, owns Morelli Law Firm, which has offices, lawyers, cases and experts all over the country. Benedict Morelli and his team of experienced lawyers are expert at handling a wide variety of cases, from auto and truck accidents, to construction injuries, to complex employment discrimination. One critical reason for their success is that unlike many firms, Morelli Law has the experience, patience, and resources to pursue all difficult cases. Since founding the firm, Mr. Morelli and his team have successfully dealt with an impressive list of outstanding cases in the industry. In fact, they have delivered more than a billion dollars on behalf of their clients. Impressive firm results include a $95 million settlement in a sexual discrimination case involving Aaron’s Inc., as well as a $62 million settlement for Mark Perez, a construction worker who fell from a roof and suffered a brain injury. When asked whether they would feel afraid when facing difficult opponents in court, “At my core, I’m a trial lawyer,” said Benedict Morelli. “Because of our experience and accomplishments in the courtroom, our opponents know that we’re prepared to pursue thebest result possible. Going to trial does not intimidate us.”The firm is devoted to realizing its clients’ goals both inside and outside of the courtroom. For example, in a drunk driving case, the firm worked with the client to strengthen New York laws that punish drunk drivers. This effort has made it easier for lawyers in New York to charge drunk drivers. Moreover, Mr. Moreli and his team are also committed to helping those who have been wronged achieve the justice they deserve, no matter the difficulty of the circumstances.Corporations are powerful actors in society and Mr. Morelli and his team feel fortunate to be in a position to provide the highest level of service to their clients.8.What contributes to Morelli Law Firm’s success?A.Talents, Strategies and funds.B.Attitude, passion and resolution.C.Experience, patience and resources.D.Management, devotion and knowledge.9.What does the underlined word “intimidate” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Scare.B.Threaten.C.Benefit.D.Excite. 10.What can we learn about the company Morelli Law Firm?A.It has made more than a billion dollars from their clients.B.It focuses mainly on bringing justice to the wrongful cases.C.It aims to help clients obtain good outcomes in and out of court.D.It works with New York to pass laws on banning drinking alcohol.11.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Morelli Law Firm B.A top-rated lawyerC.Morelli and his cases D.Corporations in societyHospice (临终安养院) services benefit only about one person in three who dies in the US. “There are still over one million Americans who die each year without receiving hospice services,” according to a report produced in 2003. And for most who do get hospice care, their time in hospice is so short that staff members often lack the opportunity to provide the best care for their physical and emotional needs. There are several reasons that more patients do not go into hospice care earlier. One is that Medicare (医疗保险) doesn’t cover the cost of patients’ life-extending treatment if theyenter hospice. Medicare also requires that the doctor referring someone for hospice care must declare that the patient is expected to die within six months. As a result, some doctors hesitate about making an early referral to avoid being accused of cheating. Finally, there are simply not enough hospice centers and services available to meet the needs of dying patients throughout the country. Many patients still have some concern over how hospice works. The philosophy of hospice is to neither accelerate nor postpone death. As Dr. Matt Kestenbaum, a hospice director, put it: “We let nature take its course, and we give patients all the things they need to be comfortable.”Dying “naturally” in hospice does not deny patients the treatment for common diseases like blood clots. Hospice expenses are automatically covered by Medicare and most insurers provide hospice coverage as well.Choosing hospice care does not mean patients lose the services of their personal doctors. They can return to regular insurance benefits when they leave hospice care because their condition improves or they want a therapy the hospice does not provide. One thing bothering doctors is that patients will lose hope if they go into hospice. But the goal should be to refocus hope on what might be realistically achieved in the time remaining. A patient who enters hospice can have the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends and settle unfinished business.12.Why don’t many patients go to hospice earlier?A.Because patients have to stay in hospice for a long time.B.Because Medicare requirements aren’t in favor of hospice.C.Because doctors can’t predict how long patients will live.D.Because most hospice services are far away from patients.13.What is the aim of hospice services?A.To extend patients’ life.B.To ease patients’ sufferings.C.To reduce patients’ costs.D.To settle patients’ business. 14.What concern might patients have about entering hospice?A.They will lose treatment for common diseases.B.Hospice can’t provide the treatment they need.C.Doctors may give them unrealistic hope.D.They will be separated from their family.15.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A.To criticize America’s Medicare system.B.To explain why hospice is unpopular.C.To introduce the way hospice works.D.To popularize hospice services.二、七选五Nowadays, many of us are finding ourselves tired out, struggling to build balance backprovide a range of benefits including reducing anxiety, easing mental tiredness and refreshing us. 一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解During this shopping season, salesmen will come up with different strategies to get your business. Many product companies use specific colors to cause positive emotions and compete for a sale. However, sight is not the only sensory (感官的) retail that companies use. Sounds and smells can also influence consumers' purchasing decisions.Nobel Prize-winning research shows that our sense of smell has great power to cause an emotional response. A study published earlier this year compared purchasing in a French flower shop when the smell of lavender (薰衣草) was given off and when it wasn't. It found that the smell increased the number of consumers' purchasing items and the amount of their purchases. An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing to pay more, when the room had a mixed smell of flowers. Realizing the subconscious impact of smell, many stores apply artificial scents (气味) through their heating and air-conditioning vents (通风口) or place scent machines above their doors. For instance, a coconut scent might make that bikini more appealing as you long for a vacation.Ever felt frenzied due to a store's fast-paced music? Or calmed by a piece of light music? A retailer's choice of music can have a big impact on consumers' moods. One study found that when subjected to loud music, consumers will spend less time in a store. But interestingly, the researchers did not find a difference in sales or customers' satisfaction. Another interesting finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to unfamiliar music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different music in some areas to appeal to varying consumers.Well, you could always leave the store and take a break, but the food court probably isn't your best choices as brands like Cinnabon and Panera Bread also use scents as part of their customers' experience. Online retailers (零售商) use a variety of other strategies to get your business, but you can always neglect those and enjoy the familiar scents of home.(1)The passage is mainly about ________.A. consumers' favorite sounds and smells while shoppingB. shopping malls' strategies for satisfying consumersC. some special services from super shopping mallsD. two factors affecting consumers' shopping decisions(2)What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. Decorating stores with flowers becomes a fashion.B. Shops with special smells can attract more consumers.C. Smells can actually help businessmen gain more profits.D. The products with a kind of special smell are more popular.(3)How does music have an effect on consumers?A. It controls consumers' desire for shopping.B. It influences how long consumers stay in a shop.C. It gives consumers the satisfaction of enjoying shopping.D. Whether consumers are willing to buy things depends on it.(4)Which of the following can replace the underlined word “frenzied” in Paragraph 3?A. Satisfied.B. Depressed.C. Surprised.D. Excited.(5)What does the writer try to express in the last paragraph?A. Online shopping is becoming more and more popular nowadays.B. People should spend more time at home with family members.C. People can choose to get rid of salesmen's promotion strategies.D. Smells and sounds are important for consumers' shopping experience.【答案】(1)D(2)C(3)B(4)D(5)C【解析】【分析】本文为说明文。

2013年D篇Mark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise: the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War. H. B. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.Again and again, in the postwar years, Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race. Consider the most controversial, at least today, of Twain’s novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn, Twain’s most widely read tale. Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude. Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel “trash and suitable only for the slums (贫民窟).” More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim, the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger. (The term Nigger Jim, for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti-slavery. Jim’s search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J. Chadwick has pointed out, the character of Jim was a first in American fiction—a recognition that the slave had two personalities, “the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual: Jim, the father and the man.”There is much more. Twain’s mystery novel Pudd’nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day. Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior (低等的) to whites, especially in intelligence, Twain’s tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth. A slave gave birth to her master’s baby and, for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master’s baby by his wife. The slave’s light-skinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave-holding class. The master’s wife’s baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave. The point was difficult to miss: nurture (养育), not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example— were, to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.Twain’s racial tone was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example, by the lengthy passage in his autobiography (自传) about how much he loved what were called “nigger shows” in his youth—mostly with white men performing in black-face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them. Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.Was Twain a racist? Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the “wisdom” of the considered moral judgments of the present, we will find nothing but error. Lincoln, who believed the black man theinferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him. And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim, may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.65. How do Twain’s novels on slavery differ from Stowe’s?A. Twain was more willing to deal with racism.B. Twain’s attack on racism was much less open.C. Twain’s themes seemed to agree with plots.D. Twain was openly concerned with racism.66. We are facing today a strange new world and we are all wondering what we are going to do with it.Some 2,500 years ago Greece discovered freedom. Before that there was no freedom. There were great civilizations, splendid empires, but no freedom anywhere. Egypt and Babylon were both tyrannies, one very powerful man ruling over helpless masses. In Greece, in Athens (雅典), a little city in a little country, there were no helpless masses. And Athenians willingly obeyed the written laws which they themselves passed, and the unwritten, which must be obeyed if free men live together. They must show each other kindness and pity and the many qualities without which life would be very painful unless one chose to live alone in the desert. The Athenians never thought that a man was free if he could do what he wanted. A man was free if he was self-controlled. To make yourself obey what you approved was freedom. They were saved from looking at their lives as their own private affair. Each one felt responsible for the welfare of Athens, not because it was forced on him from the outside, but because the city was his pride and his safety. The essential belief of the first free government in the world was liberty for all men who could control themselves and would take responsibility for the state. But discovering freedom is not like discovering computers. It cannot be discovered once for all. If people do not prize it, and work for it, it will go. Constant watch is its price. Athens changed. It was a change that took place without being noticed though it was of the extreme importance, a spiritual change which affected the whole state. It had been the Athenian’ s pride and joy to give to their city. That they could get material benefits from her never entered their minds. There had to be a complete change of attitude before they could look at the city as an employer who paid her citizens for doing her work. Now instead of men giving to the state, the state was to give to them. What the people wanted was a government which would provide a comfortable life for them; and with this as the primary object, ideas of freedom and self-reliance and responsibility were neglected to the point of disappearing. Athens was more and more looked on as a cooperative business possessed of great wealth in which all citizens had a right to share.Athens reached the point when the freedom she really wanted was freedom from responsibility. There could be only one result. If men insisted on being free from the burden of self-dependence and responsibility for the common good, they would cease to be free. Responsibility is the price every man must pay for freedom. It is to be had on no other terms. Athens, the Athens of Ancient Greece, refused responsibility; she reached the end of freedom and was never to have it again. But, “the excellent becomes the permanent”, Aristotle said. Athens lost freedom forever, but freedom was not lost forever for the world. A great American, James Madison, referred to: “The capacity (能力) of mankind for self-government.” No doubt he had not an idea that he was speaking Greek. Athens was not in the farthest background of his mind, but once man has a great and good idea, it is never completely lost. The Digital Age cannot destroy it. Somehow in this or that man’s thought such an idea lives though unconsidered by the world of action. One can never be sure that it is not on the point of breaking out into action only sure that it will do so sometime.65. What does the underlined word “tyrannies” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Countries where their people need help.B. Powerful states with higher civilization.C. Splendid empires where people enjoy freedom.D. Governments ruled with absolute power.66.People believing in freedom are those who________.A. regard their life as their own businessB. seek gains as their primary objectC. behave within the laws and value systemsD. treat others with kindness and pity67.What change in attitude took place in Athens?A. The Athenians refused to take their responsibility.B. The Athenians no longer took pride in the city.C. The Athenians benefited spiritually from the government.D. The Athenians looked on the government as a business.68.What does the sentence “There could be only one result.” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Athens would continue to be free.B. Athens would cease to have freedom.C. Freedom would come from responsibility.D. Freedom would stop Athens from self-dependence.69.Why does the author refer to Aristotle and Madison?A. The author is hopeful about freedom.B. The author is cautious about self-government.C. The author is skeptical of Greek civilization.D. The author is proud of man’s capacity.70. What is the author’s understanding of freedom?A. Freedom can be more popular in the digital age.B. Freedom may come to an end in the digital age.C. Freedom should have priority over responsibility.D. Freedom needs to be guaranteed by responsibility.2016年D篇Not so long ago, most people didn’t know who Shelly-Ann Francis-Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another American teenager without much of a future. However, one person wants to change this. Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly-Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginning of true greatness. Her time were not exactly impressive, but even so, he seemed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlooked when they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in his very strict training sessions. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few year later at Jamaica’s Olympic trials in early 2008, Shelly-Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica’s unchallenged queen of the sprint(短跑).“Where did she come from?” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympics she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold. She did it again one year on at the World Championship in Berlin, becoming world champion with a time of 10.73—the fourth fastest time ever.Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. She has a mental toughness that did not come about by chance. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica’s toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse, where she lived in a one-room apartment, sleeping four in a bed with her mother and two brothers. Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica, is a really violent and overpopulated place. Several of Shelly-Ann's friends and family were caught up in the killings; one of her cousins was shot dead only a few streets away from where she lived. Sometimes her family didn’t have enough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn’t afford shoes. Her mother Maxime, one of a family of fourteen, had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby. Maxime’s early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice everything. It didn't take long for Shelly-Ann to realize that sports could be her way out of Waterhouse. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008, all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, surrounded by criminals and violence, had written a new chapter in the history of sports. But Shelly-Ann’s victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the routine murders in Waterhouse and the drug wars in the neighbouring streets stopped. The dark cloud above one of the world’s toughest criminal neighbourhoods simply disappeared for a few days. “I have so much fire burning for my country,” Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. She hopes to inspire the Jamaicans to lay down their weapons. She intends to fight to make it a woman’s as well as a man’s world. As Muhammad Ali puts it, “Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made fromsomething they have deep inside them. A desire, a dream, a vision.” One of the things Shelly-Ann can be proud of is her understanding of this truth.65.Why did Stephen Francis decide to coach Shelly-Ann?A. He had a strong desire to free her family from trouble.B. He sensed a great potential in her despite her weaknesses.C. She had big problems maintaining her performance.D. She suffered a lot of defeats at the previous track meets.66.What did the sprinting world think of Shelly-Ann before the 2008 Olympic Games?A. She would become a promising star.B. She badly needed to set higher goals.C. Her sprinting career would not last long.D. Her talent for sprinting was known to all.67.What made Maxime decide to train her daughter on the track?A. Her success and lessons in her career.B. Her interest in Shelly-Ann’s quick profit.C. Her wish to get Shelly-Ann out of poverty.D. Her early entrance into the sprinting world.68.What can we infer from Shelly-Ann's statement underlined in Paragraph 5?A. She was highly rewarded for her efforts.B. She was eager to do more for her country.C. She became an athletic star in her country.D. She was the envy of the whole community.69.By mentioning Muhammad Ali’s words, the author intends to tell us that_____ .A. players should be highly inspired by coachesB. great athletes need to concentrate on patienceC. hard work is necessary in one’s achievementsD. motivation allows great athletes to be on the top70.What is the best title for the passage?A. The Making of a Great AthleteB. The Dream for ChampionshipC. The Key to High PerformanceD. The Power of Full Responsibility2017年D篇Old Problem, New ApproachesWhile clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2 emissions(排放)peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that: "There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation. Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost.Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连体)to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level: his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season.Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200, 000 m3 of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.Increasing Earth’s reflectiveness can cool the planet. In southern Spain the sudden increase of greenhouses (which reflect light back to space) has changed the warming trend locally, and actually cooled the region. While Spain as a whole is heating up quickly, temperatures near the greenhouses have decreased. This example should act as an inspiration for all cities. By painting buildings white, cities may slow down the warming process. In Peru, local farmers around a mountain with a glacier that has already fallen victim to climate change have begun painting the entire mountain peak white in the hope that the added reflectiveness will restore the life-giving ice. The outcome is still far from clear. But the World Bank has included the project on its of "100 ideas to save the planet".More ordinary forms of adaptation are happening everywhere. A friend of mine owns an area of land in western Victoria. Over five generations the land has been too wet for cropping. But during the past decade declining rainfall has allowed him to plant highly profitable crops. Farmers in many countries are also adapting like this—either by growing new produce, or by growing the same things differently. This is common sense. But some suggestions for adapting are not. When the polluting industries argue that we’ve lost the battle to control carbon pollution and have no choice but to adapt, it’s a nonsense designed to make the case for business as usual.Human beings will continue to adapt to the changing climate in both ordinary and astonishing ways. But the most sensible form of adaptation is surely to adapt our energy systems to emit lesscarbon pollution. After all, if we adapt in that way, we may avoid the need to change in so many others.65. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 implies ____________.A. adaptation is an ever-changing processB. the cost of adaptation varies with timeC. global warming affects adaptation formsD. adaptation to climate change is challenging66. What is special with regard to Rezwan’s project?A. The project receives government support.B. Different organizations work with each other.C. His organization makes the best of a bad situation.D. The project connects flooded roads and highways.67. What did the Ice Man do to reduce the effect of global warming?A. Storing ice for future use.B. Protecting the glaciers from melting.C. Changing the irrigation time.D. Postponing the melting of the glaciers.68. What do we learn from the Peru example?A. White paint is usually safe for buildings.B. The global warming tread cannot be stopped.C. This country is heating up too quickly.D. Sunlight reflection may relieve global warming.69. According to the author, polluting industries should ____________.A. adapt to carbon pollutionB. plant highly profitable cropsC. leave carbon emission aloneD. fight against carbon pollution70. What’s the author’s preferred solution to global warming?A. Setting up a new standard.B. Reducing carbon emission.C. Adapting to climate change.D. Monitoring polluting industries.2018年D篇Children as young as ten are becoming dependent on social media for their sense of self-worth, a major study warned. It found many youngsters (少年) now measure their status by how much public approval they get online, often through “likes”. Some change their behavior in real life to improve their image on the web.The report into youngsters aged from 8 to 12 was carried out by Children’s Commissioner (专员) Anne Longfield. She said social media firms were exposing children to major emotional risks, with some youngsters starting secondary school ill-equipped to cope with the tremendous pressure they faced online. Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require users to be at least 13.The youngsters admitted planning trips around potential photo-opportunities and then messaging friends—and friends of friends—to demand “likes” for their online posts. The report found that youngsters felt their friendships could be at risk if they did not respond to social media posts quickly, and around the clock.Children aged 8 to 10 were “starting to feel happy” when others liked their posts. However, those in the 10 to 12 age group were “concerned” with how many people like their posts”, suggesting a “need” for social recognition that gets stronger the older they become.Miss Longfield warned that a generation of children risked growing up “worried about their appearance and image as a result of the unrealistic lifestyles they follow on platforms, and increasingly anxious about switching off due to the constant demands of social media”.She said: “Children are using social media with family and friends and to play games when they are in primary school. But what starts as fun usage of apps turns into tremendous pressure in real social media interaction at secondary school.”As their world expanded, she said, children compared themselves to others online in a way that was “hugely damaging in terms of their self-identity, in terms of their confidence, but also in terms of their ability to develop themselves”.Miss Longfield added: “Then there is this push to connect—if you go offline, will you miss something, will you miss out, will you show that you don’t care about those people you are following, all of those come together in a huge way at once.”“For children it is very, very difficult to cope with emotionally.” The Children’s Commissioner for England’s study—Life in Likes—found that children as young as 8 were using social media platforms largely for play. However, the research—involving eight groups of 32 children aged 8 to 12—suggested that as they headed toward their teens, they became increasingly anxious online.By the time they started secondary school—at age 11—children were already far more aware of their image online and felt under huge pressure to ensure their posts were popular, the report found. However, they still did not know how to cope with mean-spirited jokes, or the sense of incompetence they might feel if they compared themselves to celebrities (名人) or more brilliant friends online. The report said they also faced pressure to respond to messages at all hours of the day—especially at secondary school when more youngsters have mobile phones. The Children’s Commissioner said schools and parents must now do more to prepare childrenfor the emotional minefield (雷区) they faced online. And she said social media companies must also “take more responsibility”. They should either monitor their websites better so that children do not sign up too early, or they should adjust their websites to the needs of younger users.Javed Khan, of children’s charity Barnardo’s, said: “It’s vital that new compulsory age- appropriate relationship and sex education lessons in England should help equip children to deal with the growing demands of social media.“It’s also hugely important for parents to know which apps their children are using.”65. Why did some secondary school students feel too much pressure?A. They were not provided with adequate equipment.B. They were not well prepared for emotional risks.C. They were required to give quick responses.D. They were prevented from using mobile phones.66. Some social app companies were to blame because________.A. they didn’t adequately check their users’ registrationB. they organized photo trips to attract more youngstersC. they encouraged youngsters to post more photosD. they didn’t stop youngsters from staying up late67. Children’s comparing themselves to others online may lead to________.A. less friendliness to each otherB. lower self-identity and confidenceC. an increase in online cheatingD. a stronger desire to stay online68. According to Life in Likes, as children grew, they became more anxious to________.A. circulate their posts quicklyB. know the qualities of their postsC. use mobile phones for playD. get more public approval69. When she was six, she needed them more than ever: She had to go through brain-cancer surgery and MRI scans, but she was told she couldn’t take her favourite dolls with her into the magnetic (磁性的) machine because they had metal in them.So Cecily and her mom, Cathy — a home-schooler of seven kids and a professional doll maker in Westlock — got creative. Together, they made a special doll, using weighted glass and other MRI-safe materials, that could stay with Cecily during the long imaging appointments. Besides the materials it was made with, the doll was unique in that it had no facial features.“That’s so they can have any emotion,” says Cecily, who was inspired to create these dolls, called “Blessing Babies”, for other sick kids. She and her mom began creating more, donating some to children’s hospitals and selling others to fundraise. Due to high demand, they invited other doll makers to work alongside them. Soon, doll makers worldwide also began contributing, sending boxes of their handmade dolls to support the cause.Cecily’s initiatives grew. She began selling handmade furry puppies and inspirational clothing patches, in addition to running toy drives and fundraisers for various charities. Including monetary and gift donations, Cecily has raised more than $200,000 so far.Cecily’s generosity caught the attention of another well-known Edmontonian, the Oilers’ power forward Evander Kane, who met her in the press box at a game, when he was recovering from an injured wrist. Kane gave her a shirt with his name on it, and in exchange she gave him a patch that read “Scars are tattoos (纹身) with better stories.”Today Cecily calls herself a brain-cancer survivor and “childhood cancer awareness fighter”,but she is still followed closely by her team at the children’s hospital. When asked for advice on successful fundraising, she emphasizes the importance of generosity. “You don’t get poor by giving,” Cecily says “Because you always get something back, one way or another.”4.Why did Cecily need her baby dolls more at the age of 6?A.Because they were very adorable.B.Because they could treat her illness.C.Because they could offer her comfort.D.Because they all had metal in them. 5.What makes “Blessing Babies” unique?A.They are made with simple glass.B.They have no facial expressions.C.They help raise money for charities.D.They are produced by sick children. 6.Why does the author mention Evander Kane?A.To highlight his wrist injuries.B.To stress his global popularity.C.To explain the reasons for Cecily’s efforts.D.To show the impact of Cecily’sgenerosity.7.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.Generosity: the Key to Friendship B.Baby Dolls: the Comfort to KidsC.Creating Comforts for Kids with Cancer D.A Little Fighter against Childhood CancerBe honest: how often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping? And how many of those things that TikTok made you buy did you actually need? Enter de-influencing, the TikTok trend aiming to save our bank balances in the process.De-influencing is the TikTok trend with hundreds of millions of views that’s challenging the promotion around so-called popular products by telling you what you shouldn’t buy, instead of what you should. It’s a response to a few different things, including a general feeling of over-consumption and the cost of living crisis.“People are experiencing a general social media fatigue (厌倦) at the moment,” says makeup artist and beauty content creator Rose Gallagher. “Originally, user-generated content was so popular because people tended to share thoughts on things that they had purchased themselves with no real connection to the brand. Now, with so much to be gained from giving a positive review, it has become harder to tell the genuine reviews from those influenced by the potential for earning.”How is de-influencing different from influencing? It sounds progressive, but once you scratch the surface, there isn’t a huge difference between influencing and de-influencing. “It’s still influence but it’s telling people what not to buy,” says Kendall. While TikTokers may be warning consumers away from expensive or well-known products, some continue to influence by telling consumers what they should buy instead.Being honest and authentic has the potential to pay off, too. While criticizing big brands may reduce an influencer’s chances of landing a new deal in the short term, it also may increase their long-term reach as they gain a reputation for being trustworthy. Sparking debates over whether a product works or not can also drive sales for brands, as consumers respond by wanting to try it for themselves. What is different about de-influencing is encouraging consumers to take a moment to think about whether they need a product and whether it’s right for them versus whether they’re simply being influenced because it’s new, popular, or exciting. This is part of a bigger movement in beauty.8.Why does the author pose the two questions in paragraph1?A.To test readers’ honesty.B.To present people’s doubts.C.To introduce the topic of the passage.D.To give a warning against social media. 9.According to the passage, which is NOT a factor that causes de-influencing?A.An overall feeling of over-consumption.B.The high cost of the tough modern life.C.The increasing number of genuine reviews.D.People’s behaviour of buying more than needed.10.In what way is de-influencing similar to influencing according to the author?A.Staying honest and authentic in face of profits.B.Guiding consumers’ decisions on purchasing.C.Warning consumers away from expensive products.D.Leading customers to try products by sparking debates.11.What is the writer’s attitude towards de-influencing?A.Doubtful.B.Objective.C.Disapproving.D.Sympathetic.A review into whether wildlife conservation projects around the world actually work hasfound success in two-thirds of cases. However, conservationists such as wildlife presenter Chris Packham have warned that much more work is needed in order to make a difference in tackling biodiversity crisis.“It’s important to celebrate success,” Packham told BBC Science Focus. “But at the same time, one of the reasons I would argue we haven’t done enough is that we’ve been too timid. We’ve been asking politely rather than demanding directly. Now we’re running out of time.” The new study, published in the journal Science, involved scientists from universities and institutions around the world. To evaluate the overall impact of conservation work, they considered 186 conservation projects, from local to continental scales, with a measurable impact. They collected and standardized data on biodiversity levels before and after the projects. The most successful conservation, they found, targeted species and ecosystems. These efforts included projects like invasive (入侵的) species control, reducing habitat loss and restoring habitats. protecting areas and managing ecosystems sustainably. Here, “success” meant either improving biodiversity or at least slowing down its decline. Many international conservation goals have yet to be met, but the new study argues this is because researchers haven’t previously understood what the impact of wildlife conservation may be. Knowing whether current conservation methods are successful could help to create more accurate targets. While celebrations for individual species and local areas may be in order, the researchers say the scale of conservation must be significantly increased, “particularly beyond the traditional conservation field,” if we’re going to solve the global biodiversity crisis. Threats to species have been caused by human-generated climate change, habitat destruction and pollution.“While we’ve been recording these disastrous declines, we have also been putting together this toolkit (工具箱) for recovery,” Packham said. “But as the paper very sadly and accurately points out, we simply haven’t been doing it rapidly and broadly enough. That’s the bottom line.”12.Which of the following is true about the review?A.It is written by a wildlife presenter.B.It is praised by many conservationists.C.It shows the positive results of conservation efforts.D.It calls for more work to tackle biodiversity crisis.13.What does the underlined word “timid” mean in paragraph 2?A.Cautious.B.Proud.C.Frank.D.Brave.14.How can the new study help further wildlife conservation?A.By collecting various data.B.By reducing habitat loss.C.By targeting species and ecosystems.D.By deciding on more accurate targets. 15.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?A.Reports on the current success in conservation.B.Advantages of recording the declines of species.C.Significance of broadening the conservation scale.D.Suggestions on the conclusion of the scientific paper. As December starts, so does party season. Whether it’s the office Christmas party or New Year’ Eve, socializing fills many people with fear. If all the parties over the festive period stressed you out, the first thing to say is you’re not alone. 16The reason for this is the way we evolved. 17 That’s why we have developed instincts (本能) to care a lot about social stuff, are so concerned about things like reputation and status, and are afraid of making a fool of ourselves or being left out.But don’t forget, social occasions are an opportunity, not just a threat. 18 So as an initial step towards reducing your anxiety, try boosting your hopefulness about these events. For example, remind yourself of occasions — however rare they might be — when things went well and you had a fun time or you made new friends.19 Rather than waiting for the obligations (义务) to roll in and hang over you likea dark cloud, be clear about which ones you really want. If there are friends you’d love to go with, don’t wait for them to ask you — reach out and make it happen.Indeed, excessive self-focus is one of the main drivers of social anxiety. Constantly monitoring your own behaviour and words will fuel your nerves and lead you to act more awkwardly. 20 You can even give yourself another if-then plan to help with it: if I find myself being self-focused, then I’ll make a conscious effort to focus on what someone is saying or wearing. Like all challenges in life we find difficult, socializing gets easier with practice. A.Next, be a little strategic and active.B.Don’t overestimate how people judge you.C.Your friends probably like you more than you realize.D.You can focus your attention outwards to reduce anxiety.E.Actually, feeling nervous about socializing is incredibly common.F.Throughout history, humans needed to work in groups to stay alive.G.They’re a chance to create shared memories, bond and have fun together.二、完形填空I was 13 back then, standing at the kitchen table, my long hair hanging almost to my waist. However, it has also brought about a new problem—cyberbullying, which refers to the act of sending or posting harmful or cruel messages online.Recently, a famous singer, Lily, has been a victim of cyberbullying. Some people left mean comments on her social media posts, saying that her singing skills were poor and that she didn’t deserve her success. These negative comments not only hurt Lily’s feelings but also affected her performance and mental health.Lily’s fans were very angry about this and decided to take action. They started a campaign to support Lily and report those who left malicious comments. They also tried to raise awareness about the harm of cyberbullying, hoping that more people would understand the importance of being kind and respectful online.4.The passage tries to highlight the problem of ______.A.social media addictionB.privacy leakage on the InternetC.cyberbullying against celebritiesD.the spread of false information5.What did the fans do to support Lily?A.They started a campaign for her.B.They reported the malicious comments.C.They raised awareness.D.All of the above.6.What can we infer from the passage?A.Cyberbullying only happens to famous people.B.Cyberbullying can have a serious impact on the victim.C.People who leave mean comments online are usually jealous.D.There is no way to stop cyberbullying.7.The word “malicious” in the passage probably means _____.A.kind and friendlyB.having no meaningC.intended to harm or cause damageD.funny and interestingTraditionally, people have been forced to reduce complex choices to a small handful of options that don’t do justice to their true desires. For example, in a restaurant, the limitations of the kitchen, the way supplies have to be ordered and the realities of restaurant cooking make you get a menu of a few dozen standardized options, with the possibility of some modifications (修改) around the edges. We are so used to these bottlenecks that we don’t even notice them. And when we do, we tend to assume they are the unavoidable cost of scale (规模) and efficiency. And they are. Or, at least, they were.Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to overcome this limitation. By storing rich representations of people’s preferences and histories on the demand side, along with equally rich representations of capabilities, costs and creative possibilities on the supply side, AI systems enable complex customization at large scale and low cost. Imagine walking into a restaurant and knowing that the kitchen has already started working on a meal optimized (优化) for your tastes, or being presented with a personalized list of choices. There have been some early attempts at this. People have used ChatGPT to design meals based on dietary restrictions and what they have in the fridge. It’s still early days for these technologies, but once they get working, the possibilities are nearly endless.Recommendation systems for digital media have reduced their reliance on traditionalintermediaries. Radio stations are like menu items: Regardless of how nuanced (微妙) your taste in music is, you have to pick from a handful of options. Early digital platforms were only a little better: “This person likes jazz, so we’ll suggest more Jazz.” Today’s streaming platforms use listener histories and a broad set of characters describing each track to provide each user with personalized music recommendations.A world without artificial bottlenecks comes with risks — loss of jobs in the bottlenecks, for example — but italso has the potential to free people from the straightjackets that have long limited large-scale human decision-’making. In some cases — restaurants, for example — the effect on most people might be minor. But in others, likepolitics and hiring, the effects could be great.8.What does the underlined word “bottlenecks” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.Facing too many choices.B.Choosing from limited options.C.Avoiding the cost of choosing.D.Having too many desires to satisfy. 9.How can AI meet everyone’s needs?A.By meeting both ends of supply and demand.B.By decreasing representations on the supply side.C.By disconnecting the sides of supply and demand.D.By reducing people’s preferences on the demand side.10.What’s the similarity between radio stations and menu items?A.They are a necessary part in people’s life.B.They offer limited choices.C.They depend on digital platforms.D.They provide reasonable suggestions. 11.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The variety of human’s choices.B.Standardized optrarts in daily life.C.AI settlements to the option bottlenecks.D.Recommendation systems for digital media. When my two boys have free time, they want to go to the mall. No, they aren’t shop-a-holics (购物狂). They want to go to gaze at sneakers. These aren’t the sneakers you find in Foot Locker. They are limited editions—usually Nikes—that range in price from $250-$900 or more. There’s the Chunky Dunkys, a collaboration between Nike and ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s. And the Space Jam Jordans. And dozens ofother pairs of shoes, all of which they know by name and all of which are very, very expensive. That made me wonder: How did this sneaker culture develop? After all, when I was a kid, I wanted Jordan brand shoes too. But they cost $100 and I would wear them until they fell apart. Now, my boys long for shoes that cost ten times that and if they got them, they would never even think of scuffing them up by wearing them.It all started during the Industrial Revolution, when the very wealthy began to find they had leisure time on their hands, Elizabeth Semmelhack, who runs the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, told me.“These’ nouveau riche (暴发户)’ industrialists wanted to show that they had arrived. And so, the ancient game of tennis was revived.” explained Semmelhack, “But the problem with lawn tennis—one, the lawns of lawn tennis are extremely expensive, so they didn’t want people to run around in leather shoes. And two, when you play on lawn, you can get your feet wet. So rubber soled shoes, the sneaker, was invented as something that the wealthy could wear as they pursued these wealthy pleasures. Besides, rubber was, at the time, quite expensive, so having shoes with rubber soles was seen as a status symbol.”But for most of us, sneakers were something you wore—not something you collected. With the development of internet, older versions of shoes could be purchased and collected. And sneaker companies, Nike especially, leaned into the trend.12.What is the Chunky Dunkys?A.It’s a company’s name.B.It’s a kind of ice cream.C.It’s a kind of limited edition sneaker.D.It’s one of the author’s kids’ name.13.Why did the author mention his experience as a kid?A.To show he was poor when he was a kid.B.To encourage his children to wear cheap shoes.C.To give an example about the development of sneaker culture.D.To show Jordan brand shoes have been popular for a long time.14.What can we know from Semmelhack’s words?A.Rubber soled shoes could prevent feet from wetting.B.These ‘nouveau riche’ industrialists created lawn tennis.C.Leather shoes were more expensive than rubber soled shoes.D.The very wealthy were busy with their work during Industrial Revolution.15.What is the author’s attitude towards collecting sneakers?A.Objective.B.Critical.C.Favourable.D.Unconcerned.How to Avoid an Internet AddictionIt may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的)circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the “manly”qualifies required. This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人). She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.5.The word “liability” most probably means ________.A. disadvantageB. advantageC. misfortuneD. trouble6.Bowman’s exper iment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness________A. turns out to be a disadvantage to menB. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to womenC. has as little effect on men as on womenD. affects men and women alike7.It can be inferred from the passage that people’s views on beauty are often________.A. practicalB. supportiveC. old – fashionedD. one - sided8.The author writes this passage to ________.A. give advice to job - seekers who are attractiveB. discuss the disadvantages of being attractiveC. demand equal rights for womenD. state the importance of appearanceCSome people believe that international sport brings about good will between the nations and that ff countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the terrible incident with the murder of athlets, but the Games were also ruined by those incidents caused mainly by minor national contests. One country received its second - place medal with great anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were certain that one of their goals should not have been dismissed and that the opposite side’s victory was unfair. Their manager was angry when he said: “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Society are finished. ”The president of the society said later that such words could result in the pause of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not give away first place to Russia, after a fighting end to their contest. The game had ended in quarrel. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play, A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player beat it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. The judges discussed the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then decided not to receive the silver medals.Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played for honors or money rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that sportsmen should compete as individuals , or in non national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages dangerous nationalism.9.According to the author, recent Olympic Games have ________.A. brought about goodwill between the nationsB. made only false national prideC. hardly showed any international friendshipD. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred10.What did the manager mean by saying, “… Hockey and the International Hockey Society are finished”? ________.A. The society should be dismissed11.The author gives the two examples in paragraphs 2 and 3 to show________.A. how false national pride leads to undesirable incidents in international gamesB. that sport men have been more troublesome than they used to beC. that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendshipD. that unfair decisions are common in Olympic Games.12.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage? ________.A. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improvedB. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic GamesC. Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the gameD. International contests lead to misunderstanding between nations.DARIEL, West Bank: A suicide bomber blew up near Israeli soldiers outside a Jewish settlement in the West Bank yesterday, killing at least three people and wounding about 30 others, the settlement’s mayor and rescue workers said.“A suicide bomber came and there were many soldiers…and he blew himself up.” said Ron Nachman, mayor of the settlement of Ariel. “Soldiers were among the casualties. ”People on the spot said the bomber blew up after soldiers eating at a food stand in a petrol station at the entrance of the settlement found him. So they did not have to make the film themselves. Also, they did not have to process the film immediately. They could bring it back to their studios and develop it later meaning that they did not have to carry lots of equipment. And finally, the invention of the small handheld camera made photography less expensive. With the small camera, anyone could be a photographer. People began to use cameras just for fun. They took pictures of their families, friends and favorite places. They called these pictures“ snapshot”.Photographs became very popular in newspapers in the 1890s. Soon magazines and books also used documentary photographs. These pictures showed true events and people.
