The notion that in the words “or not to be ”he is speculating on the possibility of “something after death”---whether there is a future life –cannot be entertained for a moment. The whole drift of the speech shows his belief in a future life. Practically the whole speech has become proverbial as an outpouring of utter worldly weariness. ANSWER TO passage 2:1. A2. B3.“Paradise Lost”4.John Milton5.In this passage, God is depicted as a despot “Who now triumph, and in the excess of joy/sole reigning holds the T yranny of Heaven;” whil e in contrast Satan is presented as the real hero, a rebel with “the unconquerable will, And courage never to submit or yield.” The epic turns out to be an eloquent expression of the revolutionary spirit of the English bourgeois revolution, a call to resist tyranny and to continue the fight for freedom. Herein lies the great significance of the passage and the work as well./doc/205598258.htmlton is difficult to read, because of his involved style withfrequent inversions and very complicated sentence structure. His sentences are often long. Y et, to express his sublimity of thought, he wrote in a style that is unsurpassed in its sonority, eloquence, majesty and grandeur—the “Miltonic” style. He is a great master of the blank verse. His lines are rich in the variations of rhythm and pause.ANSWER TO passage 3:1.The Spectator2.Sir Roger at the Church3. a4.Sir Roger represents the country gentry. He is a country gentleman of old fashioned manners. He stands for the old-fashioned virtues of simplicity, honesty, and piety. His foibles, which are describes with a gentle humor, make a setting for his virtues, which point an example to the world of fashion. He is created as a character fit in the novel.5.The periodical literature in “The Spectator” maintained its tone of courtesy and good breeding. Such prose is easy to understand yet capable of variety and beauty. Just as Dr. Johnson described, “His prose is the model of the middle style; on grave subjects not formal, on light occasions not graveling; pure without scrupulosity, and exact without apparent elaboration; always equable, and always easy, without glowing words or printed sentences.”ANSWER TO passage 4:1.Swift2.Lilliput3.Gulliver’s Travels4.Lemuel Gulliver5.The style is characterized by directness, simplicity andvividness. The most grotesque creations are combined with the bitterest satire.ANSWER TO passage 51. “A Modest Proposal”2. Jonathan Swift3. A Mod est Proposal is an example of Swift’s favorite satiric devices used with superb effect. Irony (from the deceptive adjective “modest” in the title to the very last sentence) pervades the piece. A rigorous logic deduces ghastly arguments from a shocking premise so quietly assumed that the reader assents before he is aware of what his assent implies. Parody, at which Swift is adept, allows him to glance sardonically at, by then , the familiar figure of the benevolent humanitarian (forerunner of the modern sociologist, social worker, economic planner) concerned to correct a social evil by means of a theoretically conceived plan. The proposer, as na?ve as he is apparently logical and kindly, ignores and therefore emphasizes for the reader the enormity of his plan. The whole piece is an elaboration of a rather trite metaphor: “The English are devouring the Irish.” But there is nothing trite about the pamphlet, which expresses in Swift’s most controlled style his pity for the oppressed, ignorant, populous, and hungry Catholic peasants of Ireland, and his anger at the rapacious English absentee landlords, who were bleeding the country white with the silent approbation of Parliament, ministers, and the Crown.ANSWER TO passage 6:1. It refers to the poor little boy who has been made black because of their sweeping. Chimneys.-2.The title of the poem is “The Chimney-Sweeper”3. It was the “God and Priest and king” who together builda Heaven of misery for the weak and the poor.4. The language of this short lyric, though, very simple, yet somewhat ironical satirical which reveals his understanding and knowledge of the source of the misery and sufferings of the poor and the weak.ANSWER TO passage 7:1. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, Thomas Gray2. quatrains, iambic3. dusk, darkness4. sentimentalism, graveyard schoolSentimentalism seemed to have appeared hand in hand with the rise of realistic English novel. Sentimentalism often relates to sentimentality and sensibility in some literary works . In Poetry, we have Thomas Gray’s “An Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”, not mention the various odes of sensibility which flourished in the later half of the century.ANSWER TO passage 8:1. “London”2. A case in point is the two expressions "morning star" and "evening star". They refer to the same star but differ in sense.35. [T] 36. [T]IV. Explain the following terms.37. Reference: It is what a linguistic form refers to in the real world; it is a matter of the relationship between the form and the reality.38. Conceptualism: It is the view which holds that there is no direct link between a linguistic form and what it refers to; rather, in the interpretation of meaning they are linked through the mediation of concepts in the rind. 39. Synonymy: It refers to the sameness or close similarity of meaning.Synonyms can be divided into dialectal synonyms, stylistic synonyms, emotive synonyms, collocational synonyms and semantic synonyms.40. Entailment: It is basically a semantic relation (or logical implication), and it can be clarified with the following sentences: (a) Tom divorced Jane. (b) Jane was Tom's wife.In terms of truth value, the following relationships exist between these two sentences: when A is true, B must be also true; when B is false, A must also be false. When B is true, A may be true or false. Therefore we can say A entails B.41. Componential analysis: It defines the meaning of a lexical element in terms of semantic components, or semantic features. He knows this all too well. Several years ago, when he and his business partner, Enrique Fernandez, witnessed (目睹)a woman drowning, they tried to help her, but it was too late. This made Adrian very sad. Now, Adrian is the boss of General Drones, a company he founded with Enrique, whose work was making drones. The two worked together to create a search-and-rescue drone that can help prevent drowning. If lifeguards notice a person in distress in the water, they can notify (通知) a drone pilot, who's also at the beach and can send the drone out directly to the person. The pilot locates the person with the help of a camera the drone has, which can reach him/her in just a few seconds.“This is important,”says Adrian.“Because ▲.”The drone then drops a life vest to the person. The life vest goes around the person and fills up with air so they can float (漂浮). By staying above the person, the drone helps the lifeguard quickly locate the person who is struggling in the water.Adrian and Enrique started working on this project in 2015. It took a long time because they had to design it specifically for the beach. The beach can be hard for machines because of the sun, wind and water. To date, their drones have helped in more than 60 emergencies at 22 beaches in Spain. Adrian hopes that more people will help him so they can expand their services in other countries too.1.According to the passage, most drownings happen_ ______.A. quickly without soundB. loudly with lots of movementC. slowly with much noiseD. slowly with lots of movement2.What might inspire Adrian Plazas to start General Drones?A. His experience as a lifeguard.B. His interest in drone technology.C.His dream to prevent drownings.D. His friendship with Enrique Fernandez.3.Which of the following can be put into in Paragraph 5?A. the lifeguards are trained wellB. the lifeguards have more time to arriveC. the lifeguards play an important roleD. the lifeguards knew water safety well4.The underlined word “expand”in the last paragraph means“______”.A.talk moreB. add detailsC. make a planD.make widerBWe can make mistakes at any age. And most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke my leg?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.① Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. ① Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” That’s being friendly. ① But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck. ①“Just think of all the things you should be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got the new bike you want. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say may save another mistake.( )1. Where can we put the sentence “And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words.”?A. ①B. ①C. ①D. ①( )2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Being friendly.B. A bit of envy.C. Lucky dog.D. Your luck.( )3. Why does the writer think we go wrong about the speakers?A. We don’t listen carefully when they talk.B. They aren’t able to express their meaning clearly.C. They usually state one thing but mean another.D. We often doubt whether they mean what they say. ( )4. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Can you tell their real meanings?B. I’m a real lucky dog.C. Maybe he’s not a true friend.D. Speaking clearly saves you more mistakes.CAbout 2000 years ago, V olcano Vesuvius erupted (火山喷发), destroying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now scientists are working to decode (破译) one of the great mysteries of that time --- the scrolls of Herculaneum(赫库兰尼姆卷轴).In 1752, workers digging in Herculaneum discovered over 600 scrolls. Most of them were made from papyrus --- a paper-like material. The heat from the volcano had burned the scrolls so much that they looked like chunks of charcoal (木碳块). The scrolls were so fragile that just touching them could make them fall apart. So scientists have been looking for ways to read the scrolls without opening them.Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky has been working on this for over 20 years. He developed a method of using a CT scanner to take 3D X-ray images of a papyrus scroll. In 2016,his team used this method to read a burned scroll found near the Dead Sea. But the scrolls from Herculaneum are much harder. This method didn't work well. Still, Dr. Seales hoped to decode them and trained an AI program. Though he was making progress, it was slow going. Then he met with two businessmen. They had the idea of holding a competition for decoding the scrolls. The competition offered large prizes. About 1,500 people have taken part in it. These people are sharinginformation as they make progress, so everyone can build on those ideas. In August, 2023, Casey Handmer found a pattern that showed where the ink had been on the scrolls.Following his lead, Luke Farritor, a 21-year-old student, created an AI program that found a whole word:“πopφúραc” which means“purple”. This was the first word ever read from these ancient scrolls. Soon afterward, Youssef Nader used a different method to find the same word. For their efforts, Mr.Handmer and Mr. Nader each won $10,000. Mr. Farritor won $40,000.Now people are working to earn the competition's $700,000 top prize, which is for decoding four longer sections of the scroll. “With all the recent progress, it's likely that someone will win this prize, too. For me, reading words from within the Herculaneum scrolls is like stepping onto the moon,”Dr. Seales says.“Now it is time to explore.”( )1. What does the underlined word “fragile” mean in paragraph 2?A. Easy to open.B. Hard to break.C. Easy to break.D. Hard to open. ( )2.What can we learn about the scrolls of Herculaneum?A. They were easy to read.B. They were once burned by fire.C. They were all made from papyrus.D. They were discovered near the Dead Sea.( )3.What does Dr. Seales think of the future of decoding the scrolls of Herculaneum?A.Difficult and impossible.B. Challenging and uncertain.C. Difficult but certain.D. Challenging but hopeful.( )4.The main purpose of this passage is to .A.s how the discovery of the scrolls of HerculaneumB. encourage readers to decode the scrolls of HerculaneumC. tell readers the methods of decoding the scrolls of HerculaneumD. introduce people's efforts to decode the scrolls of Herculaneum三、语篇阅读Zhang Fuqing was a former hero who made admirable achievements during the War of Liberation and received China's highest State honor. 声音是谁发出来的英语作文The Voice: Who Produces It?Introduction:The human voice is a remarkable instrument that allows us to communicate, express emotions, and connect with others. Have you ever wondered how our voices are produced? In this article, we will explore the fascinating process of voice production and delve into the various factors that contribute to the unique sound of each individual's voice.1. Anatomy of the Vocal System:The production of sound begins with the respiratory system. As we inhale, air enters the lungs and is then expelled through the trachea. The trachea splits into two bronchi, which further branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles. At the top of the trachea lies the larynx, commonly known as the voice box.2. The Larynx and Vocal Folds:Within the larynx, there are two folds of tissue known as the vocal folds or vocal cords. These folds are located at the entrance of the windpipe and are responsible for producing sound. When we speak or sing, the air from the lungs passes through the vocal folds, causing them to vibrate. The vibration creates sound waves, which are then shaped into speech by the articulatory system.3. Pitch and Intensity:The pitch of our voice is determined by the tension of the vocal folds. When the vocal folds are stretched tightly, they vibrate at a higher frequency, resulting in a higher pitch. Conversely, when the vocal folds are more relaxed, the pitch of the voice is lower. The intensity or volume of our voice is controlled by the force with which air passes through the vocal folds.4. Resonance and Articulation:After the sound waves are produced by the vocal folds, they travel through the throat, mouth, and nasal cavities. These cavities act as resonators, amplifying and shaping the sound. The shape of the oral cavity, tongue placement, and movement of the lips all contribute to the unique resonance of each person's voice. Articulation, on the other hand, involves the precise movements of the tongue, lips, and jaw to form specific sounds and words.5. Individual Differences:The sound of each person's voice is influenced by various factors, including genetics, age, gender, and cultural background. Genetic factors play a significant role in determining the size and shape of the vocal folds, which can affect the pitch and quality of the voice. Age-related changes, such as the thickening of vocal fold tissues, can also alter the sound of the voice. Conclusion:The production of the human voice is a complex and intricate process. From the respiratory system to the vocal folds, and finally to the resonators and articulators, each component plays a crucial role in creating the unique sound of our voices. Understanding the mechanics of voice production can help us appreciate the intricacies of human communication and the beauty of vocal expression. So, the next time you speak or sing, remember the incredible journey your voice takes to be heard.。

Written by Adrian Tan, author of The Teenage Textbook (1988), was the guest-of-honour at a recent Nanyang Technological Uni NTU convocation ceremony. This was his speech to the graduating class of 2008.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I must say thank you to the faculty and staff of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information for inviting me to give your convocation address. It’s a wonderful honour and a privilege for me to speak here for ten minutes without fear of contradicti on, defamation or retaliation. I say this as a Singaporean and more so as a husband. My wife is a wonderful person and perfect in every way except one. She is the editor of a magazine. She corrects people for a living. She has honed her expert skills over a quarter of a century, mostly by practising at home during conversations between her and me.On the other hand, I am a litigator. Essentially, I spend my day telling people how wrong they are. I make my living being disagreeable.Nevertheless, there is perfect harmony in our matrimonial home. That is because when an editor and a litigator have an argument, the one who triumphs is always the wife. And so I want to start by giving one piece of advice to the men: when you’ve already won her heart, you don’t need to win eve ry argument.Marriage is considered one milestone of life. Some of you may already be married. Some of you may never be married. Some of you will be married. Some of you will enjoy the experience so much, you will be married many, many times. Good for you.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The next big milestone in your life is today: your graduation. The end of education. You’re done learning. You’ve probably been told the big lie that “Learning is a lifelong process” and that therefore you will continue studying and taking masters’ degrees and doctorates and professorships and so on. You know the sort of people who tell you that? Teachers. Don’t you think there i s some measure of conflict of interest? They are in the business of learning, after all. Where would they be without you? They need you to be repeat customers. The good news is that they’re wrong. The bad news is that you don’t need further education because your entire life is over. It is gone. That may come as a shock to some of you. You’re in your teens or early twenties. People may tell you that you will live to be 70, 80, 90 years old. That is your life expectancy.I love that term: life expectancy. We all understand the term to mean the average life span of a group of people. But I’m her e to talk about a bigger idea, which is what you expect from your life. You may be very happy to know that Singapore is currently ranked as the country with the third highest life expectancy. We are behind Andorra and Japan, and tied with San Marino. It seems quite clear why people in those countries, and ours, live so long. We share one thing in common: our football teams are all hopeless. There’s very little danger of any of our citizens having their pulses raised by watching us play in the World Cup. Spectators are more likely to be lulled into a gentle and restful nap.Singaporeans have a life expectancy of 81.8 years. Singapore men live to an average of 79.21 years, while Singapore women live more than five years longer, probably to take into account the additional time they need to spend in the bathroom. So here you are, in your twenties, thinking that you’ll have another 40 years to go. Four decades in which to live long and p rosper.Bad news. Read the papers. There are people dropping dead when they’re 50, 40, 30 years old. Or quite possibly just after finishing their convocation. They would be very disappointed that they didn’t meet their life expectancy.I’m here to tell you this. Forget about your life expectancy. After all, it’s calculated based on an average. And you never, ever want to expect being average.Revisit those expectations. You might be looking forward to working, falling in love, marrying, raising a family. You are told that, as graduates, you should expect to find a job paying so much, where your hours are so much, where your responsibilities are so much. That is what is expected of you. And if you live up to it, it will be an awful waste. If you expect that, you will be limiting yourself. You will be living your life according to boundaries set by average people. I have nothing against average people. But no one should aspire to be them. And you don’t need years of education by the best minds in Singapore to prepare you to be average.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What you should prepare for is mess. Life’s a mess. You are not entitled to expect anything from it. Life is not fair. Everyt hing does not balance out in the end. Life happens, and you have no control over it. Good and bad things happen to you day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment. Your degree is a poor armour against fate.Don’t expect anything. Erase all life expectancies. Just live. Your life is over as of today. At this point in time, you have grown as tall as you will ever be, you are physically the fittest you will ever be in your entire life and you are probably looking the best that you will ever look. This is as good as it gets. It is all downhill from here. Or up. No one knows. What does this mean for you? It is good that your life is over.Since your life is over, you are free. Let me tell you the many wonderful things that you can do when you are free.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The most important is this: do not work.Work is anything that you are compelled to do. By its very nature, it is undesirable.Work kills. The Japanese have a term “Karoshi”, which means death from overwork. That’s the most dramatic form of how work can kill. But it can also kill you in more subtle ways. If you work, then day by day, bit by bit, your soul is chipped away, disintegrating until there’s nothing left. A rock has been ground into sand and dust. There’s a common misconception that work is necessary. You will meet people working at miserable jobs. They tell you they are“making a living”.No, they’re not. They’re dying, frittering away their fast-extinguishing lives doing things which are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, harmful.People will tell you that work ennobles you, that work lends you a certain dignity. Work makes you free. The slogan “Arbeit macht frei” was placed at the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps. Utter nonsense.Do not waste the vast majority of your life doing something you hate so that you can spend the small remainder sliver of your life in modest comfort. You may never reach that end anyway.Resist the temptation to get a job. Instead, play. Find something you enjoy doing. Do it. Over and over again. You will become good at it for two reasons: you like it, and you do it often. Soon, that will have value in itself.I like arguing, and I love language. So, I became a litigator. I enj oy it and I would do it for free. If I didn’t do that, I would’ve been in some other type of work that still involved writing fiction – probably a sports journalist. So what should you do? You will find your own niche. I don’t imagine you will need to loo k very hard. By this time in your life, you will have a very good idea of what you will want to do. In fact, I’ll go further and say the ideal situation would be that you will not be abl e to stop yourself pursuing your passions. By this time you should know what your obsessions are. If you enjoy showing off your knowledge and feeling superior, you might become a teacher.Find that pursuit that will energise you, consume you, become an obsession. Each day, you must rise with a restless enthusiasm. If you don’t, you are working. Most of you will end up in activities which involve communication. To those of you I have a second message: be wary of the tr uth. I’m not asking you to speak it, or write it, for there are times when it is dangerous or impossible to do those things. The truth has a great capacity to offend and injure, and you will find that the closer you are to someone, the more care you must take to disguise or even conceal the truth. Often, there is great virtue in being evasive, or equivocating. There is also great skill. Any child can blurt out the truth, without thought to the consequences. It takes great maturity to appreciate the value of silence. In order to be wary of the truth, you must first know it. That requires great frankness to yourself. Never fool the person in the mirror.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have told you that your life is over, that you should not work, and that you should avoid telling the truth. I now say this to you: be hated. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Do you know anyone who hates you? Yet every great figure who has contributed to the human r ace has been hated, not just by one person, but often by a great many. That hatred is so strong it has caused those great figures to be shunned, abused, murdered and in one famous instance, nailed to a cross. One does not have to be evil to be hated. In f act, it’s often the case that one is hated precisely because one is trying to do right by one’s own convictions. It is far too easy to be liked, one merely has to be accommodating and hold no strong convictions. Then one will gravitate towards the centre and settle into the average. That cannot be your role. There are a great many bad people in the world, and if you are not offending them, you must be bad yourself. Popularity is a sure sign that you are doing something wrong.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The other side of the coin is this: fall in love.I didn’t say “be loved”. That requires too much compromise. If one changes one’s looks, personality and values, one can be loved by anyone.Rather, I exhort you to love another human being. It may seem odd for me to tell you this. You may expect it to happen naturally, without deliberation. That is false. Modern society is anti-love. We’ve taken a microscope to ev eryone to bring out their flaws and shortcomings. It far easier to find a reason not to love someone, than otherwise. Rejection requires only one reason. Love requires complete acceptance. It is hard work – the only kind of work that I find palatable.Loving someone has great benefits. There is admiration, learning, attraction and something which, for the want of a better word, we call happiness. In loving someone, we become inspired to better ourselves in every way. We learn the true worthlessness of material things. We celebrate being human. Loving is good for the soul.Loving someone is therefore very important, and it is also important to choose the right person. Despite popular culture, lov e doesn’t happen by chance, at first sight, across a crowded dance floor. It grows slowly, sinking roots first before branching and blossoming. It is not a silly weed, but a mighty tree that weathers every storm. You will find, that when you have someone to love, that the face is less important than the brain, and the body is less important than the heart. You will also find that it is no great tragedy if your love is not reciprocated. You are not doing it to be loved back. Its value is to inspire you. Finally, you will find that there is no half-measure when it co mes to loving someone. You either don’t, or you do with every cell in your body, completely and utterly, without reservation or apology. It consumes you, and you are reborn, all the better for it.Don’t work. Avoid telling the truth. Be hated. Love someon e.。
