Stereotypes are a common phenomenon in our society.

They are often formed based on limited information and can

lead to unfair judgments and discrimination. As a Chinese

person living in a foreign country, I have experienced

firsthand the negative effects of stereotypes.

One stereotype that I often encounter is the belief

that all Chinese people are good at math. While it is true

that many Chinese students excel in math, it is unfair to

assume that all Chinese people possess this skill. I

remember a time when I was in high school, and my math

teacher automatically assumed that I would be at the top of

the class simply because of my ethnicity. This put a lot of

pressure on me to live up to the stereotype, and when I

struggled with a particular concept, I felt like I was

letting not only myself down, but also my entire race.

Another stereotype that I have faced is the assumption

that all Chinese people are quiet and reserved. While it is

true that some individuals may fit this description, it is

not representative of all Chinese people. I am naturally

outgoing and enjoy socializing with others, but I have

often been met with surprise when I express my extroverted

personality. People seem to be taken aback when I don't

conform to their preconceived notions of how a Chinese

person should behave.

These stereotypes not only affect how others perceive

me, but they also impact how I perceive myself. I have

caught myself trying to fit into the mold of the "model

minority" and feeling guilty when I don't meet the

expectations that others have of me. It is frustrating to

constantly have to prove myself and break free from these

stereotypes.
