When Socrates Meets Confucius
——Collision of Ideas
Ladies and gentlemen,
I'm so proud to stand here, discussing such a fantastic topic, amazingly, which
just inspires me a lot. Can you imagine that? Two great masters, Socrates and
Confucius, who come from totally different countries and ages, dramatically encounter
each other. However, both of them are absolutely the leading dragon of their own
country in education, philosophy, politics, etc. So,we can’t wait to see what will
happen when Socrates meets Confucius?
As we often say: Socrates is Confucius of the west, and Confucius is
Socrates of the east, so there must be many shared ideas between them, especially
their similar approaches to education.
When it comes to education,Socrates must have a lot to talk with Confucius in
that both of them teach a great number of students. As teachers, they’re quite similar
because neither of them tell the answer directly to their students.Instead, they give
their students enough time to state confusions freely. What the masters do is only point
out the core of the problem or pose some inspiring questions. At this point, they create
such an innovative teaching methodology which exerts significant influence on the
education until today. We call it “ heuristic education ”.
Although the two masters both desire to cultivate numerous talents for their
own country, there are several contradictions between their ideas.I’m sure that
Confucius will argue with Socrates fiercely in that he’s so traditional that he wants to
develop a lot of traditional talents, who can serve the feudal society with the faith in
“letting the king be a king, the minister a minister, the father a father and the son a
son.” By contrast, Socrates prefers those with independent thinking and
self-awareness.But when Confucius meets Socrates,he would no doubt close his eyes
embarrassedly, signing,“Put more cloths on your body.Don’t you feel ashamed?”Now
guess, what Socrates might be?I suppose he would keep silent and just like what he
had done in the face of his strong wife and think, “Wow,it’ll rain after
thunder.”Interesting,right?
Of course, the above discussion is just my personal imagination! But it
would surely be great fun if Socrates and Confucius did meet each other and get
involved in a debate.I believe more sparks of wisdom will be generated in the
collision of the great minds.
Thank you!
