He had been forced to take a job stocking shelves at a local grocery store for $8.90 an hour when he couldn't get work fixing floors. On a good day in Australia, he now makes as much as 50 Australian dollars( US $50.21 ) an hour—about twice the amount for a typical flooring job in the US. He plans to start his own flooring business.“I can make what I did in a week in the US in less than a day here”,said Mr. Davila, who lives near a mining boom town in Western Australia.Australian government figures show just under 7,000 Americans currently work on longterm visas, an 80% jump over the past five citizens are now thethirdlargest group applying for socalled 457 work visas, after British and Indian nationals. Americans with degrees in areas such as accounting or mine engineering, as well as other skilled workers, can obtain a nonrenewable(不可更新的) permit for as much as a threeyear stay. After that, they can apply f or the renewable 457, which allows up to a fouryea r stay. The need for workers is particularly pressing in Western Australia. The mining state's unemployment rate was 4.5% in Novem ber, below the national average of 5.2%. Drivers of heavy trucks can pull in sixfigure salaries while experienced crane(起重机) operators can earn hundreds of thousands a year. Attracting skilled workers is a shift for Australia, which historically sent many of its most highly educated to the US and Europe, according to migration data.36.________, a growing number of Americans go to work in Australia.A.As a result of the encouragement of AustraliaB.As a result of high unemployment in the USC.Out of their ambition of finding valuable resourcesD.Out of their determination to realize their dreams37.It can be inferred from the passage that 457 work visas are ________.A.for skilled workers in some fieldsB.for students on the building projectC.especially for American workersD.especially for those out of work38.It is implied in the passage that ________.A.foreigners have to give up their original professional jobs when working in AustraliaB.it is possible for foreigners to earn more money in Australia than in their own countriesC.there are more US citizens hoping to work in Australia than from other countriesD.Australians think it fair to exchange their talent with American sk illed workers39.Which part of Australia needs workers particularly?A.Northwestern Australia.B.Eastern Australia.C.Southeastern Australia.D.Western Australia.课时作业(十五)Ⅰ.1.D 考查虚拟语气。

After that, I had a fear of bees. That's when my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I read picture books and watched videos about bees, and I learned that bees help make the food we eat because of their pollination (授粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didn't have bees to pollinate tomato plants, we wouldn't have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldn't have cheese without pollination, either. The bad news is that bees are struggling to survive. Many are dying. Some scientists think it might be because of chemicals that are used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money to help bees?” I talked to my grandmother Helen. She gave me her recipe (调制法) for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940.I added honey to her old recipe. That way, I could sell the lemonade and donate (捐赠) some of the money to groups that are helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I would be educating others on the importance of bees and helping to save them.My dad showed me how to work out what supplies I needed to buy. At first, I sold lemonade at a stand at a kids' business event. But I wanted to help bees all year round. We talked to a pizza place near where I live. They said they wanted to sell it. Now more than 30 stores sell it, too. This year we sold about 140,000 bottles.I love helping to save bees. It's the sweetest feeling ever.语篇解读:本文是记叙文。

课时跟踪练(一) Welcome to the unit & Reading Ⅰ.阅读理解APlant cloning has been an agricultural technique used by farmers and gardeners for centuries. Grafting (嫁接) is a common form of plantcloning. Many plants in nature actually clone themselves andreproduce asexually.Cloned plants are much more predictable than normal plants,so their yield (产量) is more reliable. Cloned plants also reproduce faster, limiting the amount of time between planting and harvesting. It is also often cheaper to produce seeds through cloning than through traditional methods. Plants can essentially be optimized so that farmers or individual growers always have the best seeds available. With more yield at a faster rate, farms can produce more food for more people while decreasing overall costs.Cloning can be used to wipe out diseases that previously killed off entire fields of crops. This would make plants immune (免疫的) to the kinds of diseases that farmers and gardeners around the world fear each year. Crop failures due to disease and virus could become a thing of the past. Also, plants that are near extinction can be brought back to life through cloning.Through cloning scientists can develop “super” fruits and vegetables of superior nutritional quality. This could make for a healthier population overall. This is already being done through selective pollination (授粉), and genetic cloning could take it to the next level.By plant cloning we have a population of identical plants and all these plants equally suffer from the same diseases, but in nature the weak would die and the strong would survive. While there are some dangers to consider with plant cloning, there are plenty of benefits that could prove vital to the propagation (繁衍) of the human species.语篇解读:本文主要讲了克隆植物的好处:增加农作物产量、提高植物的免疫力、提高水果和蔬菜的质量等。

入舵市安恙阳光实验学校Unit 3 Science and nature课时练1 2篇阅读+1篇完形Ⅰ阅读理解A(2020·宣城诊断)In the story of The Crow and the Pitcher from Aesop’s Fables, a thirsty crow(乌鸦) drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink. Now scientists have evidence to back up that story. Crows actually do understand how to make water displacement(排水量) work to their advantage, experiments show. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as firstgraders.Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Cambridge, presented six crows with tubes containing water. Inside the tubes, a worm or a piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crows. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that would sink, and some plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the erasers into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack. However, the_birds_handled_awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow one to get a snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into a narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops; while it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didn’t realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了科学家通过实验对乌鸦智商进行的研究。

He says another hot product this season is smart cameras. They connect to the Internet through WiFi. This makes it eas y for users to email or upload photographs directly from the camera. “You can literally take a picture, upload it into your Facebook in a matter of seconds. These things are pretty cool because they do a lot of things.”Streaming media boxes also connect to the Internet. People are able to watch web content such as movies and YouTube videos on their televisions. Another popular item is wireless speaker systems. The newest ones work with any device that has Bluetooth technology, including smartphones, laptops and tablets. With the growing popularity of Internet shopping, many consumers will visit a store first to look at a product, and then go online to find it at a lower price.Stores like Best Buy understand that and they want to stay competitive.“We have something called the per fect match promise which means if you buy a certain device and you find it cheaper within 30 days we’ll go ahead and price match that for you.”Elman Chacon said.1.According to Brain Tong,________.A.the Apple’s iPad Mini is more suitable for enthusiastic readersB.the hardware in iPad Mini is more advanced than that in Nexus 7C.Nexus 7 has fewer apps than iPad MiniD.iPad Mini is more ecofriendly2.If you’ve discovered that a certain device you bought at Best Buy is more expensive than one at another store, ________.A.you are sure to get double the amount you paidB.you can ret urn the device and get your money backC.the store will return the price differencesD.the store will lower the price within 30 days3.Which of the following would be the best gift for a cab driver?A.Smart cameras.B.Streaming media boxes.C.Wireless speaker systems.D.Tablet computers.Ⅲ.任务型阅读(2015·徐州四模)Zebras have their own bug repellent (驱虫剂)?Eww bugs! They are so annoying! We humans are lucky that we can apply repellents to avoid nasty bites. But what’s an animal to do? They have no choice but to spend their days shooing them off with their tails, unless, of course, they are zebras, who apparently have their own automatic repellent — their striped skin!Scientists had originally thought that the reason why the animal had developed the black and white lines was to help protect itself from predators in the African savannah, because the stripes make it difficult to single out one zebra that is traveling with a herd. While that may be true, the theory has never been tested or proven. Now the experts have another — that the stripes have evolved to repel the annoying horse flies that not only feed off their blood, but also, transmit dangerous germs into the bodies of these innocent animals. The study was performed by a team of Swedish scientists. One of the clues that got them thinking along these lines was the fact that darker horses got bitten more often than lightcolored or white ones. The fact that zebras are born black and only develop stripes as they grow older made the scientists theorize that the stripes may be something the animals have developed to make themselves less attractive to flies. To test if this may be the case, they painted some boards at a horseinfested horse farm in Budapest with patterns of black and white stripes of varying widths and applied a layer of glue on them. What they noticed was that the places where the black and white stripes were at their narrowest (similar to what zebras have) attracted the fewest flies. They achieved similar results when they painted horses with black and white zebralike stripes. While the researchers are not sure why this may be the case, they believe it may be something to do with the way insects operate — horseflies are attracted to horizontally polarized light (偏振光); since white does not reflect it, white horses are luckier than black ones. But zebras seem to be the luckiest of all. When the researchers measured the polarized light reflected from real zebra skins, they found that it matched light patterns that were the least attractive to horseflies. While this theory does make logical sense, nobody is 100 percent sure that it is really true, given that it has never been tested on a real zebra. If it is true, it does raise the question of why a horse, a close relative of the zebra has failed to develop stripes. The researchers believe that this could be because there are more horseflies in Africa, where zebras reside, than anywhere else in the world.repelling the f lies答案Ⅰ.语篇解读:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。
