While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t fe el any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic(骨盆的) bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.(原创)1. What does the underlined word “tingly” (in paragraph 4) mean?A. a slight stinging feelingB. a clear ringing soundC. a pleasant warm feelingD. a strong excitement feeling2. According to the study, what influence does sitting with your legs crossed have on your health?①increasing your blood pressure ②neck and back pain③pressure on the veins and nerves ④permanent nerve damageA.①④B.③④C.①②③D.①②④3. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To increase people’s knowledge of sitting with their legs crossed.B. To introduce the bad influences that sitting with their legs crossed has on people.C. To help people form the habit of sitting with their legs.D. To advocate getting rid of sitting with their legs.BMicrosoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.“To mitigate the drawbacks…We created GazeSpe ak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate. The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.(原创)4. How does the GazeSpeak app help ALS suffers speak with their eyes and communicate with others?A. It combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to re cognize eye movements in real time.B. It performs frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups.C. It interprets eye signals and translates them into letters.D. It is designed as a low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn system.5. What does “they” in the seventh paragraph refer to?A. gridsB. speakersC. lettersD. movements6. What can be inferred from the passage?A. For people suffering from ALS, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.B. Current eye-tracking input systems are expensive, but robust under sunlight.C. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got camearound 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out.I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. Everything was moving. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.We got close to the staircase landing only to hear the loud ripping sound of our garage door coming off. The back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside.By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open—we never did get it fully shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.“Hold on! Hold on!” h e yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. We use it to store Christmas decorations. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.(原创)7. What does the underlined sentence “No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us.” in paragraph 2 mean?A. As soon as the couple found the news of the tornado on the TV, it hit the town.B. When the couple found something to cover their house, the tornado came.C. The couple had not found tornado. Soon, it came on top of them.D. The couple did not have the courage to fight against tornado when it was on the top of them.8. Which of the following sentences is NOT true about the passage?A. There was no any symbol of the tornado’s coming.B. A three-foot-long tree branch impaled the couple.C. Because of the strong wind, not both of the couple could get into the closet floor.D. Jimmy didn’t fly right out back of the house.9. Why didn’t the wife feel pain?A. Because she didn’t get any hurt when the storm hit.B. Because she was too scared to feel pain when the tornado was over her.C. Because she devoted all her strength to holding on to her husband.D. Because she had reached the closet and she was safe.10. What is the main idea of the passage?A. A severe tornado hit the town.B. The disaster should be warned in advance.C. Man can conquer nature.D. The couple experienced an unforgettable 4 minutes.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.How to Enjoy Life As a Teen(原创)The "best years of your life"? Maybe not, but you can learn to make the most of your high school days.1. Learn to appreciate small things. Whether it's having a computer, having friends, having a good supply of food, a bed to sleep on, family that loves you, having a decent education or simply being born in this world. Remember that the point of life is for you to enjoy it. 11 . Remember that these are the last few years you will be able to enjoy yourself without having to worry about the responsibility of an adult, but make sure you prepare yourself for when you do become one. When you actually become an adult, you'll learn to love that responsibility and you probably never want to go back.2. 12 . Unlike what many articles state, you don't have to be popular and have a gazillion friends to be happy. In fact, many of the "friends" you have when you are popular are not true friends. Try to have friends that like you who you are, not just because you are wearing a certain brand of shoes or something like that. These are people who shop at the same store as you; not someone who will sympathize with you when your dog dies.3. Keep your grades up. 13 .This also sets you up to get into a college you want to go to, which in turn prepares you for a career you will enjoy, improving your quality of life in the future. You'll get cheap car insurance as well if you have at least a B or A average.4. 14 . Participating in clubs, activities, and sports increases your chances of meeting new friends. While you only need 4 or 5 close friends, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to meet new people. Participating gives you something to do instead of sitting bored at home and wallowing in self-pity.5. Work at a job you can enjoy. Working is a great way to gain experience and to meet other people. 15 .This will look great on your resume. If you can't find work, especially in this hard economic time, volunteer or make your own job.A. You should also find a hobby that is meaningful or practical.B. Be happy, and life will reward you.C. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing your hard work pay off in the form of A's and B's (but mainly A's).D. Choose your friends wisely.E. When you do get out of college, interviewing companies will look at your prior work experience.F. Be sociable.G. Even though you want to enjoy your teen life as best as possible, don't slack off in school. I was walking around in a Big Bazar store doing a shopping, when I saw a Cashier talking to a boy who couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 years ol d. A(2017·浙江名校模拟冲刺卷)Here's another reason to get off the couch and start working up a sweat. Time the exercise right and you could improve your ability to remember something new. That's the finding of a new study. But it all comes down to timing. To lock up the new information, start burning those calories roughly four hours after you took in the new information. That's according to researchers at an institute on brain, cognition (认知) and behavior. It's at Radboud University's Medical Center, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Eelco van Dongen and his colleagues shared their new findings in the June 16 Current Biology. This precisely timed memory trick comes from tests with 72 people. Each learned the location of 90 objects on a computer screen. Afterwards, some of the members watched relaxing nature videos. Others worked up a sweat on body-building bikes, changing between hard and easy riding for 35 minutes. Their workouts came either soon after the cram session (考前突击复习) or four hours later. Two days later they were tested again. Those who remembered the objects' sites best were the people who had waited four hours after their learning before riding. Among those who remembered sites correctly, the four-hour delay before biking also led to more consistent activity in an area important for memory. It's known as the hippocampus (海马区). The consistent activity here suggests that the memories had been strong, the scientists say.Van Dongen's team does not yet know how exercise works its memory magic. They do, however, have a guess. Aerobic exercise leads to the creation of several important chemicals in the brain. One is a protein known as BDNF. The other is dopamine (DO-puh-meen). It can help convey messages between nerve cells. These two chemicals may help strengthen memories by linking brain cells, the researchers suspect.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了锻炼与记忆力之间的关系。
【全国市级联考】浙江省杭州市2018届高三高考模拟卷四英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读选择Passing through the Atlanta airport one morning, I caught one of those trains that take travelers from the main terminal to their boarding gates. Free, and impersonal, the trains run back and forth all day long. Not many people consider them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter. At the front of the first car – looking out the window at the track that lay ahead – were a man and his son.We had just s topped to let off passengers, and the doors were closing again. “Here we go! Hold on to me tight!” the father said. The boy, about five years old, made sounds of sheer delight.I know we’re supposed to avoid making racial distinctions(种族歧视) these days, so I hope no one will mind if I mention that most people on the train were white, dressed for business trips or vacations. As I got off, I remembered some thing I’d wanted to buy in the terminal. I was early for my flight, so I decided to go back.I did – and just as I was about to reboard the train for my gate, I saw that the man and his son had returned too. It is also known as the Festival of the Kitchen God, the deity(神) who oversees the moral character of each household. Here are six things you should know about the Little New Year, another sign of the start of spring.1. Offer sacrifices to Kitchen GodOne of the most distinctive traditions of the Little New Year is the burning of a paper image of the Kitchen God, who will report on the family's conduct over the past year. The offerings to the Kitchen God include pig's head, fish, sweet bean paste, melons, fruit, boiled dumplings, barley sugar, and Guandong candy, a sticky treat made out of glutinous millet and sprouted wheat. Most of the offerings are sweets of various varieties. It is thought that this will seal the Kitchen God's mouth and encourage him to only say good things about the family when he ascends to heaven to make his report.2. House cleaningAccording to Chinese folk beliefs, during the last month of the year ghosts and deities must choose either to return to Heaven or to stay on Earth. It is believed that in order to ensure the ghosts and deities' timely departure people must thoroughly clean both their persons and their houses, down to every last drawer and cupboard.3. Eat Guandong candyGuandong candy, a sticky treat made out of glutinous millet and sprouted wheat, is a traditional snack that Chinese people eat on the Festival of the Kitchen God.4. The activity of taking bath and haircut is often taken on the Little New Year.6. Preparations for Spring FestivalPeople start to stock up necessary provisions for the Spring Festival since the Little New Year. Everything needed to make offerings to the ancestors, entertain guests, and feed the family over the long holiday must be purchased in advance.7.What is the most unusual tradition in the Little New Year?A.Offering sacrifices to the Kitchen GodB.Burning paper image of Kitchen GodC.Preparing the necessity for the New YearD.Cleaning house and people themselves8.What is the Kitchen God’s duty in the man’s world?A.Collecting the information of the man’s worldB.Protecting the character of each homeC.Gathering sacrifices for other Gods in heavenD.Overseeing the moral people in the world9.Why are most of the offerings sweets?A.Because the Kitchen God loves sweet foods.B.As it is the traditional customs.C.As people hope the God says good for them.D.Because sweets are the best sacrifices.10.Which of the following statements is probably TRUE according to the passage? It’s great that you finally got your will d one, have your medical directives in place, and gave someone power of attorney. 13.Life is changing. This is one time when DIY probably isn’t a good idea. Talk to a financial adviser, preferably one with expertise in estate planning.15.Don’t assume that establishing joint tenancy (sharing ownership in personal property, such as a home) or joint ownership over financial accounts is enough to protect your assets. A.Make no assumptions.B.But, you’re hardly finished.C.Decide to do it, and to avoid unexpected consequences.D.It is difficult to choose a right heir before your death unless they are your closest ones.E.Ideally, it will make things easier for your heirs(后继人) at a time when they most need it.F.Finding a reliable agency to deal with your possessions is a wise choice when planning estate.G.The birth of a child and divorce are other life events that will require updating estate planning documents.三、完形填空“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. 1.which 分析该句结构可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词“The Classic of Tea”,空处为关系词,指物,故填which。
