Unit 1 Growing UPPart Text A Writing for MyselfⅡWhen we are writing we are often told to keep our readers in mind, to shape what we say to fit their tastes and interests. But there is one reader in particular who should not be forgotten. Can you guess who? Russell Baker surprised himself and everyone else when he discovered the answer.
Writing for MyselfRussell Baker1The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I've been bored by everything associated with English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.
Unit 1 Never Give In,Never, Never, Never Almost a year has passed since I came down here at your Head Master’s kind invitation in order to cheer myself and cheer the hearts of a few of my friends by singing some of our own songs. The ten months that have passed have seen very terrible catastrophic events in the world-ups and downs, misfortunes—but can anyone sitting here this afternoon, this October afternoon, not feel deeply thankful for what has happened in the time that has passed and for the very great improvement in the position of our country and of our home? Why, when I was here last time we were quite alone, desperately alone, and we had been so for five or six months. We were poorly armed。
We are not so poorly armed today; but then we were very poorly armed。

Unit 1 The Way to Success课文ANever, ever give up! As a young boy, Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and had he not been from a famous family, he probably would have been removed from the school for deviating from the rules. Thankfully, he did finish at Harrow and his errors there did not preclude him from going on to the university. He eventually had a premier army career whereby he was later elected prime minister. He achieved fame for his wit, wisdom, civic duty, and abundant courage in his refusal to surrender during the miserable dark days of World War II. His amazing determination helped motivate his entire nation and was an inspiration worldwide.Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patriotic young boys at his old school, Harrow. The headmaster said, "Young gentlemen, the greatest speaker of our time, will be here in a few days to address you, and you should obey whatever sound advice he may give you." The great day arrived. Sir Winston stood up, all five feet, five inches and 107 kilos of him, and gave this short, clear-cut speech: "Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!"

Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patr iotic youngboys at his old school, Harrow. The headmaster said,"Young gentlemen, th e greatest speakerof our time, will be here in a few days to address you, and you shoul d obey whatever soundadvice he may give you." The great day arrived. Sir Winston st ood up, all five feet, five inchesand 107 kilos of him, and gave this short, clear-cut spe ech:"Young men, never give up. Nevergive up! Never give up! Never, never, never, ne ver!"
永不,永不,永不,永不!”Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas - none of these ca n inhibit astrong spirit committed to success. No task is too hard. No amount of prepar ation is too longor too difficult. Take the example of two of the most scholarly scientis ts of our age, AlbertEinstein and Thomas Edison. Both faced immense obstacles and e xtreme criticism. Both werecalled "slow to learn" and written off as idiots by their tea chers. Thomas Edison ran away fromschool because his teacher whipped him repeate dly for asking too many questions. Einsteindidn't speak fluently until he was almost nine years old and was such a poor student that somethought he was unable to learn. Yet both boys' parents believed in them. They worked intenselyeach day with their sons, and the boys learned to never bypass the long hours of hard workthat they needed to s ucceed. In the end, both Einstein and Edison overcame their childhoodpersecution and went on to achieve magnificent discoveries that benefit the entire worldtoday.
Consider also the heroic example of AbrahamLincoln, who faced substantial har dships, failuresand repeated misfortunes in his lifetime. Hisbackground was certainly not glamorous. He wasraised in a very poor family with only one year offormal educa tion. He failed in business twice, suffereda nervous breakdown when his first love die dsuddenly and lost eight political elections. Later inlife, he suffered profound grief ov er the tragicdeath of three of his four children. Yet his strong willwas the spur that pus hed him forward, strengthening his optimism, dedication and determination. It intensifi ed and focused hisefforts and enabled him to triumph over the overwhelming failures and profound difficultiesin his life. A hundred years later, people from around the wor ld commend Abraham Lincoln as the greatest American president of all time.
Just like Churchill and Lincoln, only those who "keep their eyes on the prize", th ose who upholda committed and focused will and spirit, will find their endeavors succ essful. Many artists, statesmen, writers and inventors have had the same experience. T hey achieved prosperitybecause they possessed a fierce will to keep preparing and wo rking and a passion to succeed. They attained success, not because it was easy, but bec ause they had the will to overcomeprofound obstacles and to work diligently in the pu rsuit of their goals.
