VI. Suggested Teaching Procedure and Methodology:

Listening and Speaking: ( an interactive approach is

introduced)

1. Pre-listening Task:arrange the students in pairs and ask

them to discuss the following

questions:

①Have you ever heard of the Bermuda Triangle? What have

you heard about it?

②What are the possible explanations for the disappearances? ③What is your theory of why things disappear? Where do

you think they go and why do they

go there?

2.Background Information:

百慕大是世界闻名的一个地方，位于美国北卡罗来纳州正东约600公里的海上。百慕大三角的具体地理位置是指位于大西洋上的百慕大群岛、迈阿密(美国佛罗里达半岛)和圣胡安(波多黎各岛)这三点连线形成的三角地带，面积达40万平方英里。百幕大三角由360多个岛屿组成的群岛，这些岛屿好似圆形的环，躺卧在大西洋上由于百慕大群岛与美洲大陆之间有一股暖流经过，因此，这里气候温和，四季如春岛上绿树常青，鲜花怒放。百慕大又被称为地球上最孤立的海岛．因为它与最接近的陆地也有几百英里之遥，因此，百慕大群岛四周是辽阔的海洋，具有蓝天绿水，白鸥飞翔，花香四溢的秀丽风景。

不过，百慕大之所以出名，并非是由于它的美丽的海岛风光，而是，提起百慕大，人们就会联想到恐怖而神秘的“百慕大三角海区”。百慕大三角是指北起百慕大，西到美国佛罗里达州的迈阿密，南至波多黎各的一个三角形海域，面积达40万平方英里。

相传，在这里航行的舰船或飞机常常神秘地失踪，事后不要说查明原因，就是连一点船舶和飞机的残骸碎片也找不到。以致于最有经验的海员或飞行员通过这里时，都无心欣赏那美丽如画的海上风光，而是战战兢兢，提心吊胆，唯恐碰上厄运，不明不自地葬送鱼腹。现在，百慕大三角已经成为那些神秘的、不可理解的各种失踪事件的代名词。.

1. Background Information: ①Christopher Columbus

Genoese navigator and explorer for Spain, who explored

Caribbean islands, coast of Central America, South America, etc.

②Charles Bertlitz

One of the world’s foremost authorities on natural

mysteries and the author of many famous books, including the

highly successful Mysteries of the Forgotten Words and The

Mystery of Atlantis.

2. Pre-reading Activities

Listen to short passage twice and answer questions

①Why initially did some villagers not trust “Lord Williams”?

②At a later date why did many villagers suspect he was not

the person he claimed to be?

③Why do the villagers still drink to their “Lord”?

听力原文：

In a small village in Scotland the locals still drink to their

“Lord Williams”. Some of the people in this beautiful village

never quite trusted this rich stranger, who only visited on

weekends, right from the beginning. Later many suspected he

was not really a wealthy lord after he had spent great sums of

money in the village buying up and improving a large number of

properties with no hope ever getting his money back in the

future. However all agree that he and “his” money helped

the village back onto it’s feet. Where his money came from

and why he spent it on their village would only be revealed at a

later date.

Answers:

Williams” did not live in the small village but only visited it

on weekends ever since he came to the village for the first time.
