It is well known that people in different countries behave in different ways , such as their way of

life and thinking and so on . In my opinion , it is because the difference cultural background that

people behave in different ways . Take people in western and eastern countries for example .

First of all , the way of life . In eastern countries , most of people like live together and teamwork .

When they have some problem , they are tend to ask others for help . On the contrary , the

western people like live alone , without their parents . Besides , when they meet with a problem ,

they are apt to deal with it by themselves instead of asking for help . But as time passes by , some

of young people in eastern countries like live alone , because they enjoy independence . In this

context , they have something in common with western people .

Cultural Differences between the East and West

As we all know, the culture in the east and that in the west are very different.

In value judgment, easterners hold the value of collectivism while westerners hold the

values of individualism. As the way of thinking, western people think more directly,

but the eastern people more obliquely. So while solve a problem, westerners would

solve it in a quite direct way while easterners would more likely to detour. Meanwhile,

easterners would show their emotions and opinion in a more tactful way than

westerners who show then out directly. And for mode of life, westerners prefer live by

their own while easterners prefer live in groups. When talking about interpersonal

relationship, westerners have much more simply interpersonal relationship than

opposite ways. This paper discusses the differences in cross-cultural communication

and business English.

1. Introduction

In recent years， with the accelerated paces of reforming and opening， the

foreign contacts are more and more extensive. The world today is characterized by an

ever-growing number of contacts between people with different languages and

cultural backgrounds. In this paper， the author would discuss the differences in

cross-cultural communication and business English. In the first part， it shows the

general difference between China and the western countries， and then discusses the

different points in business English based on the cross-culture context.
