the Slender West Lakethe Slender West Lake is famous for its scenic ['siːnɪk] splendor ['splendə]. It is 4 kilometers in length[leŋθ] and less than 100 meters in width [wɪdθ], covering an area of more than 30 hectares ['hekteə]. The Slender West Lake is like a tall and slender beauty in comparison with the West lake in Hangzhou . The lake is typical of the Chinese water-based garden art combining the grace and elegance['elɪgəns] of the south with the grandeur ['grændjə] and magnificence [mæɡ'nɪfɪsns] of th e north. The Long Causeway ['kɔːzweɪ] and Xuyuan Garden (1页)The Long Causeway is the best place for you to enjoy the natural beauty in spring, for the willows ['w ɪləʊ] are turning green and the peach blossoms ['blɒs(ə)m] are blooming. At the end of the Long Causeway, there is a round door, on the head of which written two Chinese characters ---- "徐园”. Inside there is a clear pond covered with lotuses ['ləʊtəs]. And around the pond there dotted with stones in various shapes. Xiaojin Hill (1页)Xiaojin Hill is a small island in the Slender West Lake. It was constructed during the Middle Qing Dynasty ['daɪnəsti](清朝中期) and originally called Changchun Hill (长春岭). On the top of the hill, there is a Fengting Pavilion [pə'viljən] (风亭), which is the culmination [kʌlmɪ'neɪʃən] of the lake. To the west of the Xiaojin Hill, there is a causeway leading to the lake, at the end of which there is a square pavilion called “Chuitai”(吹台). It is said that the Emperor ['empərə] Qianlong(乾隆皇帝) was fishing there.the Five- Pavilion Bridge (2页)On the right side of the Chuitai, there is the Five- Pavilion Bridge. It is a symbol of Slender West Lake as well as the Yangzhou City. It was constructed during the Qing Dynasty ['daɪnəsti], with a history of more than two thousand years. There are five pavilions with unique characteristics on the bridge. There is no doubt that the famous expert ['ekspɜːt] on bridge named Mao Yisheng (茅以升) said that in China Zhaozhou Bridge(赵州桥) is the oldest bridge,Lugou Bridge (卢沟桥) the most magnificent [mæg'nɪfɪsənt], and the Five-Pavilion Bridge the most artistically beautiful.the White Pagoda (2页)On the left side of the Chuitai, there is the White Pagoda [pə'gəʊdə], which is 27.5 meters high. There is a Xumi base (须弥座) under the pagoda. It is a polyhedron [,pɒlɪ'hiːdrən] with four corners. On each side of the pagoda there are three niche s [niːʃ], inside which there engraved [in'greivd] Chinese Zodiac ['zəʊdɪæk]. Unlike the massiveness ['mæsivnis] of the White Pagoda in Beihai Park(北海公园) in Beijing, the White Pagoda in Yangzhou is slim and graceful, casting beautiful reflections with the Five- Pavilion Bridge.the 24 Bridge (2页)Built with white marble ['mɑːbəl], the 24 Bridge is 24 meters long, 24 meterswide, with 24 parapets ['pærəpɪt] and 24 steps hence it got the name of 24 Bridge. It looks like a marble ['mɑːbəl] ribbon ['rɪbən] fluttering ['flʌtəriŋ] on the water or a rainbow lying over the lake.So Slender West Lake is just like a shinning[ʃɪning] pearl[pɜːl] set in Yangzhou, a well-known historic and cultural ['kʌltʃ(ə)r(ə)l] city. The Twenty-four BridgesThe Twenty-four Bridge Scenic Spot, located in the western section of the Slender West Lake, has been a lure since ancient times. Here, we do not see the twenty-four bridge, but it is implied in twenty-four. Of course there are also people say the twenty-four refers to the twenty-four bridge, but we don't seem to be cumbersome twenty-four textual research. The Xiaojin HillThe Xiaojin Hill is the largest island in the Slender West Lake, the building is also a lake where the most intensive. Pavilion of wind blowing, the piano room, the Melilot bookstore, chess room, month view, all concentrated in there. The Xiaojin Hill (Little Golden Hill), an islet in the lake, was built in the middle period (1644-1742) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). During the Qing Dynasty, in order to open a water channel connecting the Slender West Lake and the Daming Monastery, a canal was excavated in the northwest side of the lake. The mud excavated from the river course was piled up to form a small hill that we can still see today, namely the Xiaojin Hill. A pavilion named Wind Pavilion, located at the top of the hill, is the highest spot in this scenic area. The White PagodaAccording to the legend, Emperor Qianlong traveled to Yangzhou by boat and enjoyed the scenery of the Five-Pavilion Bridge from above the water. He said regretfully that this place would have been the same as Beihai (a famous park in Beijing) but for a white pagoda. His casual remark was picked up by the wealthy salt merchants of Yangzhou who made a white pagoda come into being overnight with salt bags piled upon each other. Afterwards, the salt merchants spent one hundred thousand taels of silver to build a real pagoda in case of the truth being discovered, hence the White Pagoda now. Unlike the massiveness of the White Pagoda in Beijing, the White Pagoda in Yangzhou is slim and graceful, casting beautiful reflections with the Five-Pavilion Bridge. The Five Pavilions BridgeBuilt in 1757 and like a belt worn on the narrow waist of Slender West Lake, the Five-Pavilion Bridge bears five pavilions on its 55-metre-long floor. The middle pavilion is higher than the other four, which are spaced two on each side in perfect symmetry. All pavilions have their four corners upturned, with rows of tiles gathered up in the middle. The pavilions, lined up with short covered corridors, have yellow glazed tiles on the roofs but green ones for the curving ridges, forming a splendid contrast of color. There are also many other beautiful Scenic Spots. If you don't know where to travel ,Slender West Lake is a good place.。
