湖北武汉市2016高考英语阅读理解二轮基础训练(32)【阅读理解】William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865. His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry.Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s.His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition. He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923.Yet,he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40,he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats's death in 1939, W.H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:Earth, receive an honoured guest:William Yeats is laid to rest.Let the Irish vessel (船) lieEmptied of its poetry.本文介绍了爱尔兰著名作家威廉·巴特勒叶慈,他在19世纪90年代成立了爱尔兰国家剧院,他以诗体戏剧及诗歌闻名,于1923年获得了诺贝尔奖。
2012高考英语二轮复习专题限时训练专题2 阅读理解35(25分钟)AThis is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store I am employed as a shop assistant. When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you . I have informed the social security office so you won’t be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that won't leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-casing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be much use to you.Actually I don’t mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expens ive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” the y told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what hadhappened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can.1. Why does the author write the letter?A. To give the thieves a serious warning.B. To express her affection for her valuable bag.C. To call people’s attention to their belongings.D. To complain about the fall of morality.BJob sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job. The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfillthe duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50per cent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits.Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels ofresponsibility and employee commitment.Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.1. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?A. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.B. Work sharing requires more working hours.C. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision.2. According to Paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time workmainly because _________.A. they were over ideal working agesB. they sought higher social statusC. they had difficulty finding full-time jobsD. they had to take care of both work and family3. In job sharing the partners should __________.A. enjoy equal social statusB. have similar work experienceC. know each other very wellD. keep in touch with each other4. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.A. discuss how to provide more jobsB. describe job sharing in generalC. recommend job sharing to womenD. compare job sharing with work sharingCThe Child Ego StateThe Child ego state is a set of behaviors, thoughts and feelings which are replayed from our own childhood.Perhaps the boss calls us into his or her office, we may immediately get a churning in our stomach and wonder what we have done wrong. If this were explored we might remember the time the head teacher called us in to tell us off. Of course, not everything in the C hild ego state is negative. We might go into someone’s house and smell a lovely smell and remember our grandmother’s house when we were little, and all the same warm feelings we had at six years of age may come flooding back. The Child ego states are constantly being updated. For example, we may meet someone who gives us the permission we needed as a child, and did not get, to be fun and joyous. We may well use that person in our imagination when we are stressed to resist our old ways of thinking that we must work longer and longer hours to keep up with everything. We might ask oursel ves “I wonder what X would say now.” Then on hearing the new permissions to relax and take some time out, do just that and then return to the work renewed and ready for the challenge. Afterwards, rather than blaming ourselves for what we did or did not do, what tends to happen is that we automatically start to give ourselves new permissions and take care of ourselves.Alternatively, we might have had an extremely unpleasant experience yesterday which goes into the Child ego state as an antique memory that stands in the way of our growth. Positive experiences will also go into the Child ego state as antique memories. The positive experiences can then be drawn on to remind us that positive things do happen. The process of analyzing personality in terms of ego states is called structural analysis. It is important to remember that ego states do not have an existence of their own. T hey are concepts to enable understanding. Therefore it is important to say “I want some fun” rather than “My Child wants some fun.” W e may be in our Child ego state when we say this, but saying “I” reminds us to take responsibility for our actions.1. The writer uses two examples in Paragraph 2 in order to _____.A. support the idea in Paragraph 1B. explain why we become nervousC. prove the Child ego state is negativeD. introduce the point of Paragraph 32. By asking “I wonder what X would say now”, we intend to __________.A. blame ourselvesB. accept challengesC. keep up with everythingD. avoid stress3. According to the passage, the Child ego state __________.A. shows one’s wisdomB. influences one’s actionsC. limits one’s thoughtsD. exists in one’s childhood4. The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to __________.A. structural analysisB. “My Child wants some fun”C. the Child ego stateD. “I want some fun”DCAD ABCB ADBD。

Carrier PigeonsPeople have used pigeons to carry messages to one another for hundreds of years. In fact, pigeons were a common way to send messages right up through World War Ⅱ. In 1815 an English banker named Nathan Rothschild made his fortune by relying on messages sent to him by carrier pigeons. English troops were fighting Napoleon's forces in France, and the English were believed to be losing. A financial panic gripped London. Government bonds were offered at low prices. Few people noticed that Rothschild was snapping up these bonds when everyone else was desperately trying to sell them. A few days later, London learned the truth; the Duke of Wellington had defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. The value of the bonds went up, and Rothschild became extremely wealthy-all because his pigeons had brought him news of the victory before anyone else knew of it.Most of the time, however, carrier pigeons were used to benefit an entire country, not just one individual. The United States, England, France, Germany, and Italy, in both World War I and World War , used carrier pigeons. Not only were the birds often the fastest, most reliable way to send messages, they could also be used to reach soldiers far behind enemy lines, where radios and field telephone lines were useless. Since they could easily be released from airplanes or ships, every branch of the armed services used the birds. In World War Ⅱ, more than 3,000 soldiers and 150 officers were needed to care for and train the tens of thousands of birds in the US Pigeon Service.Carrying messages could be a dangerous job. Some pigeons performed with such bravery that they became famous and were even awarded medals, such as England's Dicken Medal of Gallantry. In a few cases, pigeons even became prisoners of war. In 1918 American forces captured a pigeon named The Kaiser, which had been trained to fly special missions for Germany during battle. He was taken to America. Where he lived to the age of 32.The most famous pigeon of all may have been Cher Ami. Stationed in France during World War I. he carried twelve important messages for American forces. On his last mission, though wounded, he carried a message that saved the lives of 194 American soldiers. For his extraordinary service, he was awarded the French” Croix de guerre”. Carrier pigeons are a slightly different breed from the kind of pigeon you see on city streets. They ate much thinner and taller, with longer legs. Many people find carrier pigeons ugly because of their big wattle, a knobby buildup of skin on the beat; however, people who raise pigeons often enjoy this odd appearance and consider carriers the best of their breeds.Today, modern communication methods can carry information from one place to another hundreds of times faster than a pigeon could do it. However, few people would argue with the fact that carrier pigeons—especially those that served in the military(军队)—have earned their place in history. Stories about brave pigeons such as Cher Ami, President Wilson, and Colonel's Lady have the power to inspire us as no fax machine or high-speed Internet connection could ever do.1.The author provides specific dates throughout the passage in order to .A.Make a comparison between pigeons in different periodsB.Describe the development of us of pigeons during wartimeC.Indicate greater importance of pigeons in the past then nowD.Show the impact of carrier pigeons at particular points in history2.The underlined phrase “snapping up” in Paragraph 2 means” “A.Giving awayB. putting asideC. getting inD. using up3.The passage leads us to believe that .A.There were more civil carrier pigeons than military ones during wartimeB.Not all types of pigeon can be used to carry messages for human beingsC.Nobody could succeed in stopping carrier pigeons carrying out their tasksD.Modern devices give us even greater enthusiasm than the famous pigeons4.The passage suggests the successful use of carrier pigeons depends on .A.Their natureB. proper trainingC. their qualityD. the geography语篇解读本文主要介绍了在过去没有其他快捷的通讯方式的情况下,信鸽起到的巨大作用。

(2015年宁夏银川实险中学月考)A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16ºC. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources(资源); land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals, This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world's wood supply.Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However , fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value . It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.1.Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they .A.Reflect more heat into the atmosphereB.Reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earthC.Bring about high rainfall throughout the worldD.Rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16ºC2.What does the word “this” underlined in the third par agraph refer to?A.Humans have begun destroying rainforests.B.People have a strong desire for resources.C.We will lose much more than we can gain.D.Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests3.It can be inferred from the text that .A.We can get enough resources without rainforestsB.We will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained landC.The level of annual rainfall affects wind patternsD.There is great medicine potential in rainforests4.What might be the best title for the text?A.Rainforests and the environmentB.How to save rainforestsC.How to protect NatureD.Rainforests and Medical Development语篇解读热带雨林对环境有很大的影响,因为它们能够调节气候,本文重点介绍了失去热带雨林的危害。

Mr. Whitson taughtsixth-grade science. On the first day of class, he gave us a lecture about an animal called the Cattywampus, a nocturnal (夜间活动的) animal that was wiped out during the Ice Age. He passed around a skull as he talked. We all took notes and later had a quiz. When he returned my paper, I was shocked. There was a big red “X” through each of my answers. There had to be some mistakes! I had written down exactly what Mr. Whitson said. Then I realized that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened? Very simple, Mr. Whitson explained. He had made up all that story about the Cattywampus. The information in our notes was, therefore, incorrect. Did we expect credit for incorrect answers? Needless to say, we were outraged. What kind of text was this? And what kind of teacher is he? We should have figured it out, Mr. Whitson said. After all, at the very moment he was passing around the Cattywampus skull (in truth, a cat’s), hadn’t he been telling us that no trace of the animal remained? He had described its amazing night vision, the color of its fur and any number of other facts he couldn’t have known, he had given the animal a ridiculous name, and we still hadn’t been suspicious. The zeroes on our papers would be recorded in his grade book, he said. And they were. Mr. Whitson said he hoped we would learn something from this experience. He told us not to let our minds go to sleep, and to speak up if we ever thought he or the textbook was wrong. We carded our new skepticism (怀疑主义) into all our classes. This caused problems for the other teachers, who weren’t used to being challenged. Our history teacher would be lecturing about something, and then there would be clearings of the throat and someone would say “Cattywampus”. If I’m ever asked to propose a solution to the crisis in our schools, it will be Mr. Whitson. I haven’t made any great scientific discoveries, but Mr. Whitson’s class gave me and my classmates something just as important: the courage to look people in the eye and tell them they are wrong. He also showed us that you can have fun doing it. 1.The best title for this passage would probably be _______. A. Cattywampus B. An interesting and unforgettable Lesson C. A new teaching method D. The Best Teacher I Ever Had 2.The underlined word outraged in the second paragraph here means _______.A. angryB. excitedC. disappointedD. discouraged 3.From this passage, we know that Mr. Whitson was a teacher _______.A. difficult to get along withB. creative in teachingC. fond of being challengedD. full of energy and enthusiasm 4.We can infer from the passage that _______. A. teachers and textbooks are not always right B. Cattywampus could be found in the Ice Age C. the history teacher didn’t like to be challenged D. Mr. Whitson always made a bad impression on his students B When it comes to your skin, there is an extremely important fact that you must keep in mind: Your skin is the largest organ of your body. As an obvious result, skin health and maintenance(保养) is vital. Your skin does everything from protecting you from the elements to assisting you with breathing. Your skin keeps your body hydrated(含水的) and regulates your body's temperature. In the end, thisreally is only the beginning of all of the various vital functions that your skin provides to you. With this in mind, your skin cells actually rely on a sufficient amount of carbohydrates. Water is also important to the Health of your skin. While you certainly have heard it before, it actually is true that you should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fresh and pure water every day. There are many health benefits you can get from drinking water daily, including maintaining healthy skin. Finally, when it comes to the health of your skin today and into the future you should avoid smoking all together. In addition, you should drink alcohol only in moderation. Drinking enough fresh and pure water every day. 8.The most suitable title of the passage may be _______.A. An essential organ of our bodyB. Tips for soft and smooth skinC. Habits and skin healthD. How to keep our skin healthy C When our son, Alex, was young, he hated to travel. We endured refusals to visit one more museum, even if it was the Louvre. We coped with a child who resisted even a taste of onion soup in Paris and who insisted he would like nothing more than ordering room service at the hotel and watching TV. Over the years, we have come up with several hard-earned but realistic strategies to help kids cope on long-distance trips. First, we recognize that some children have trouble adjusting to new environments, food, time zones and schedules. So, in advance of a trip to England, we gave our son a taste of the new culture by making shepherd’s pie for supper. He loved the mashed potatoes, chopped meat and brown gravy(肉汁). For Italy, we sampled homemade pesto(香蒜沙司) served over linguine(扁面条). For Amsterdam, I cooked up a pot of comforting pea soup and baked a delicious apple pancake called pannekoeken. Then, when we traveled to these places, he ate these foods and they seemed like a taste of home. In addition to food, we always sample the culture beforehand by reading books and renting movies from the countries we will be visiting. For Italy, the book Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino and the films Johnny Stecchino, Cinema Paradiso, and Il Postino gave our son a glimpse of the Italian way of life. For Britain, we rented Mr. Bean and Billy Elliot, and enjoyed stories by J.R.R. Tolkien and E. Nesbit. For Amsterdam, he finished The Diary of Anne Frank. Before we leave home, we also ask Alex to go through our tour books and pick out activities that appeal to him. He was excited about visiting the London Dungeon and the Imperial War Museum, and takinga ride in the London Eye. They turned out to be big hits. Because Alex’s preferences were given equal attention, he was more tolerant of his parents’ selections, such as visiting Charters Cathedral and the Van Gogh Museum. We’ve also learned the hard way that dragging our son out of bed early in the morning ,thus making him grumpy all day. Now that he is a teenager, we let him sleep in while we sip coffee at a café, work out at the hotel gym, or take a long walk. This makes our time together much more enjoyable 9.According to the writer, parents are advised to _______. A. cook children’s favorite food B. postpone traveling until the kids are in college C. allow their kids a ride in the London Eye D. take children’s interest and preferences into account 10.Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino are mentioned as _______. A. particular desires of children B. an approach to interest the future possible visit C. highly appreciated films for tourists D. comfortable activities children could pick out 11.The underlined word “grumpy” in the last paragraph is similar in meaning to _______.A. bad-temperedB. tolerantC. energeticD. nervous 12.Which of the following might serve as a possible title for this passage?A. Kids and Parents.B. Joys of Traveling.C. Whether You Go or Not.D. How to motivate Kids to travel D Last Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific purpose in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become. When I was a kid in the New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed, almost nobody worked, and the highways, as a result, were not the desperate steeplechases(障碍赛跑) they have become today. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother—the same house my father was raised in, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek. The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for an hour of devotion, an opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there were no chores that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, different from all the other days of the week, because everyone seemed to be on the same schedule, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else. Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to consider that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood,it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visiting someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to DO this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall to participating in a road race to jetting to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such an answer would feel sepia-toned, an echo from another era. I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land and tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural cast(特质)still harbors at least remnants of the ethic of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries(反复无常的情况)and a challenging environment. 13.The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when _______. A. everyone was paying a visit to some relative far away B. everyone seemed to be free and could have some leisure C. Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the house D. nearly every adult would go to church and children were not at school 14.In the fourth paragraph, the writer compares the response “I’m making a Sunday visit to family” to an echo from another era because _______. A. people nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday B. such answers are rarely heard in our modern society C. people in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday D. visiting someone on Sunday might take a lot of time 15.From the last paragraph we may infer that _______. A. people in Maine suffer more from economic depression and the changed environment B. people in Maine has abandoned their tradition and lived an absolute new life C. land in Maine is short, thus the relationship between people is tense D. people in Maine always help each other when they are in need 16.Which word we may use to describe the writer’s attitude towards the Sunday today?A. Unsatisfied.B. Anxious.C. Treasured.D. Teased. E Farmers may not be able to prevent natural disasters, but they can at least try their best to reduce losses. For example, they can plant crops that are more likely to survive extreme weather. In north-central Vietnam, people with small farms do not plant rice between September and December. Seasonal rains might destroy the rice. So instead, they plant lotus seeds on raised beds. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says the lotus seeds bring a good price in local markets. ? Farmers in the Philippines are showing new interest in crops like winged beans, string beans, arrowroot and cassava. The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center says traditional crops like these can survive the fierce storms that often strike the islands. The United Nations says some African farmers grow bambara groundnuts during long dry periods. The seeds of this drought-resistant plant can be boiled for eating or for making flour. In some parts of the world, farmers grow vetiver grass. Researchers in Thailand wrote about vetiver in 2007 in the journal Science Asia. They noted that the grass can absorb and control the spread of harmful waste waters, like those from pig farms. Agricultural expert and author William Rivera says vetiver resists difficult conditions. It reduces damage from heavy rains. And vetiver planted on earthen dams may strengthen them against breaks and flooding. William Rivera also speaks approvingly of alfalfa. Its deep roots can find and take up groundwater. Those roots also help hold the soil against winds. And alfalfa can be a valuable food source for animals. The deep and extensive roots of sunflowers make them another good candidate for resisting extreme conditions. The tall plants have brightly colored heads that provide seeds and oil. North Dakota grows more hectares of sunflowers than any other American state. But North Dakota is better known as a top wheat producing state. Hans Kandel works at the North Dakota State University Extension Service in Fargo. He says farmersin some parts of North Dakota plant wheat that is ready to harvest in only about one hundred days. (2015年河南周口模拟)A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That's the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt-water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish. The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces. For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. (2015年山西太原五中月考)Deborah Cohen is a senior natural scientist at the Rand Corp and the author of the book A Big Fat Crisis: The Hidden Forces Behind the Obesity Epidemic and How We Can End It. According to the book, there are lots of misunderstandings of obesity. 1.If you're obese, blame your genes.Obesity rates have increased. Yet, between 1980 and 2000, the number of Americans who are obese has doubled—too quickly for genetic factors to be responsible. At restaurants, a dollar puts more calories on our plates than ever before, because restaurant meals usually have more calorie than what we prepare at home, so people who eat out more frequently have higher rates of obesity than those who eat out less.2.If you're obese, you lack self-control.Research shows that if we are faced with too much information, we have a tendency to make poor dietary choices. Our world has become so rich in temptation that we can be led to consume too much in ways we can't understand. Even the most vigilant(警觉的) people may not be up to the task of controlling themselves.ck of access to fresh fruits and vegetables is responsible for obesity. Although the US Department of Agriculture estimates that fewer than 5 percent of Americans live in the “ food deserts”, about 65 percent of the nation's population is overweight or obese. For most of us, obesity is not related to access to more fresh fruits and vegetables, but to the choices we make in supermarkets.4.The problem is not that we eat too much, but that we don't exercise.Michelle Obama's “Let's Move” campaign is based on the idea that if kids exercise more, childhood obesity rates will decrease. But there was no significant decrease in physical activity levels as obesity rates climbed in the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, although a drop in work-related physical activity may account for up to 100 fewer calories burned, leisure physical activity appears to have increased. The problem is that we eat too much.1.The author mentioned Deborah Cohen's book in Paragraph 1 to .A.Introduce the topicB.Draw readers' attentionC.Introduce the author of the bookD.Advertise the book2.What is the relationship between obesity and the place where you eat?A.The less you eat out, the higher rates of obesity you haveB.The less you eat at home, the lower rates of obesity you have.C.The more you eat out, the higher rates of obesity you have.D.The more you eat at home, the higher rates of obesity you have.3.What's the best title of this passage?A.Four misunderstandings of obesityB.Four rules to help you avoid obesityC.Obesity leads to a big fat crisiscking self-control leads to obesity语篇解读本文通过一本书告诉我们关于肥胖的四个误区。

First lady Michelle Obama turns 50 on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014.Michelle Obama has spent the first half-century of her life breaking barriers and checking off a series of firsts. Now, as she reaches her milestone birthday Friday, the nation will be watching to see in what other areas she will leave her mark. Five years after moving into the White House, and without a re-election campaign to worry about, she has more room to relax in her role and, political watchers say, possibly become more vocal (声音的) on political issues in the three years left in office. So far, critics have complained about Michelle’s silence on issues where they expected to hear her voice: Last year, at the start of her husband's second term, she disappointed advocates for tighter gun-control measures after she failed to push harder on the issue in response to the massacre (残杀) at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. She also disappointed some feminists (女权主义者) who wanted her to defend their causes instead of falling back on her self-described role as the nation’s “mom-in-chief.” Nor did she handle racial issues during her second term, as some had expected.“The most important thing to remember is, whether you a re black, white or Hispanic, you’re the first lady and the president of all the people in the United States. That’s a huge melting pot, so to reinforce (强化)that she's African American over anything else would not be wise,” said Anita McBride, who directs p rogramming and national conferences on the legacies (遗产) of America’s first ladies and their historical influence at American University.Valerie Jarrett, a top White House adviser and a close friend of the Obamas, said the first lady doesn't want to “spread herself too thin.”“She really wants to have a maximum impact and to do that in fewer areas,” Jarrett told the Associated Press. “That, she said, “is better than trying to take on every single possible cause.”But Robert Watson, a Lynn Universit y professor, said he expects Obama to “go a little harder at issues” over the next several years. “Second-term first ladies usually feel more at ease to speak more forcefully about issues close to their heart,” he said.Myra Gutin, a Ryder University communications professor and frequent lecturer on first ladies, said she expects Obama to continue making both of them a priority in her remaining years in the White House, given their success. Michelle launched the “Let’s Move” campaign in 2010. It in part icular has gained widespread support, ranging from the National Football League to the Sesame Street franchise (特许), which even gave permission to the produce industry to use its licensed characters for free on fruits and vegetables.“There’s no such t hing as a traditional first lady, not anymore in this technology-filled world. Is Mrs. Obama cutting edge? Is she an activist? No. As first ladies go, I think she’s been politically careful because she does not want there to be a major flare-up that would require her husband to use his political capital to clean up,” she said. “But she’s not exactly just sitting in the White House pouring tea and having receptions, either.”1、Critics were disappointed with Michelle because _______.A.she didn’t put gun-control measures into effectB.she failed some feminists to stand out to be a career womanC.she didn’t solve some racial problemsD.she failed to voice her opinion on some issues2、According to the professors or advisers, which of the following statements is NOT true?A.It’s not wise to reinforce Michelle is African American over anything else.B.It’s better for Michelle to have a maximum impact than to take on every possible cause.C.It's expected for Michelle to go a little harder at issues.D.It’s a tradition for first ladies to stay out of political issues.3、What does the underlined phrase “spread herself too thin” in Paragraph 6 mean?A.Try to do a lot of work at the same time.B.Get very tired.C.Try to improve physical fitness.D.Move herself away from others.4、In Paragraph 9, the campaign “Let’s Move” might be aiming to help people _______..a. gain widespread supportb. become more physically activec. have access to healthier foodsd. raise awareness about gun controlA.a, c B.a, b C.b, c D.c, d【参考答案】1---4、DDAC2016高考模拟题(由2014·江西卷A改编)Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险)but this time, it was different.
